What we know as A19 Sunderland closed after 'serious' crash

Police closed the A-road between South Hylton and East Herrington near Sunderland at about 10pm on Saturday (December 20).

Multiple police cars remain parked up at the scene on Sunday morning including crash investigators, who were walking up and down the road with a torch.

A blue tent could also be seen in the southbound carriageway, at the junction where the A19 meets the A183 Chester Road.

The circumstances of the crash are not yet known.

A National Highways spokesperson previously said: “The A19 remains closed northbound between the A690 (Farringdon) & A183 Hastings Hill and southbound between the A1231 South Hylton) and A183 following a serious collision.

“The road will remain closed throughout the morning.”
