Everything you need to know about the Christmas forecast
- The UK could see a festive chill next week, with the Met Office suggesting a slim chance of a white Christmas as temperatures drop. After weeks of wet and windy weather, conditions are expected to become calmer in the days leading up to Christmas.
- From Monday (December 22), high pressure is forecast to build from the north and northeast, settling the weather. By Tuesday and Christmas Eve, there is a 50-60 per cent chance this high pressure will bring drier conditions to most of the UK.
- The Met Office forecasts light winds, dry weather, and some sunshine for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. An easterly flow of air will lead to colder temperatures, with daytime highs around 5-7C – several degrees below average.
- Frost, mist, and fog are expected to become more frequent across the country. While a few wintry showers may develop along eastern coasts, any snow is likely to be light and patchy, making a white Christmas possible in some areas.
- After Christmas, high pressure is expected to keep the weather dry and settled, but temperatures will dip further. The main risks over the festive period are overnight frost, icy patches, and lingering fog, but overall, it should be a calmer spell after a stormy December.
