Why Seaham fitness guru recommends exercise over 50
It’s how it makes me feel mentally. And as we get older, looking after our mental health becomes just as important as looking after our bodies.
I’ve seen it so many times in the gym.

Someone starts coming along to build a bit of strength or lose a bit of weight, but after a few weeks they start telling me they feel happier, calmer, and more positive too.
It’s amazing how much regular movement can do for your mood.
Exercise is a brilliant way to manage stress. When we move, our bodies release endorphins – they’re the “feel-good” hormones that lift our mood and help clear our heads.
If you’ve ever gone for a walk when you’re feeling tense and come back feeling lighter, you’ll know what I mean.
Even something as simple as a 10-minute walk can take the edge off a stressful day.
It also helps reduce anxiety and low mood. When you make exercise part of your weekly routine, it gives you structure, purpose, and something to focus on.
That alone can make a big difference if you’re feeling down. It’s not about doing anything extreme either.
Gentle exercise like walking, swimming, or a light gym session can work wonders.
Another huge benefit is how staying active can help with loneliness. After 50, it’s easy to become more isolated – especially if the kids have left home or you’ve retired.
Joining a class or walking group can bring you into contact with like-minded people. You get the social side as well as the exercise, and often new friendships come from it.
Exercise also gives you little goals to work towards, which can boost your confidence. Hitting a target, no matter how small, feels great and builds your self-belief. And the better you feel about yourself, the more you want to keep going.
If you’re over 50 and thinking about getting more active, try not to overthink it. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym.
Just find something you enjoy and do it regularly. The mental boost can be life-changing.
