Wilfried Nancy sacked by Celtic after just eight games as Rangers nightmare the last act of mega flop boss

The Frenchman was only appointed as the new permanent boss at Celtic Park on December 3 and has already been shown the door

Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy has been axed after just eight games and a month in charge – the shortest tenure of any permanent boss in the club’s history.

Saturday’s chastening 3-1 defeat to Rangers proved the final straw for the maligned boss who failed to convince during the nightmare stint at the helm where he lost six of his eight games in charge. And one of the men responsible for Nancy’s appointment, Head of Football Operations Paul Tisdale, has also been shown the door.

The defeats coupled with the reckless playing style proved too much to stomach for a board who were hit with seething protests aimed in their direction on the Celtic Way in the wake of their defeat to their biggest rivals.

The 48-year-old lost to Hearts, Roma, and the Premier Sports Cup Final against St Mirren before defeat at Dundee United. Wins over Aberdeen and Livingston were merely flickers of life before Motherwell passed them off the pitch and Danny Rohl’s side exposed their soft centre.

Nancy was unveiled as Brendan Rodgers’ permanent successor on December 3 after swapping Columbus Crew for the Scottish Premiership champions but has suffered a nightmare at the Parkhead helm.

The Frenchman instantly changed the formation from the style that led interim boss Martin O’Neill to seven wins out of eight games and it flopped spectacularly.

It started bad and never got better. Nancy lost to the Jambos arts in his dug-out debut at Parkhead, was easily beaten by Roma in the Europa League and then blew a trophy chance when they were outclassed by the Buddies.

That all came in his first week in charge and Dundee United inflicted further misery as they made it four defeats on the spin for Nancy with a victory at Tannadice and led to fans chanting “Nancy get to f***”.

The Frenchman won back to back games against Aberdeen and Livingston to ease the pressure slightly but Motherwell recorded a first home league win over Celtic since 2013 to crank the pressure back up.

Nancy’s assistants Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier has also been relieved of their duties.

A club statement read: “Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect. The Club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Wilfried’s assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes.

“The Club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as Head of Football Operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role. A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical.”
