York Council Heworth by-election: candidates and voter information

Labour, Liberal Democrat, Conservative, Green and Reform candidates along with an independent are standing in the election which is set to take place on Thursday, January 15.

City of York Council stated residents in the ward who are not currently registered to vote should submit applications by Monday, December 29.

It comes after the council published a Notice of Election for the poll on Monday, December 8.

The calling of the election comes after incumbent Labour Heworth councillor Ben Burton announced he was standing down due to leaving York for work.

The ruling Labour group currently has 24 seats on the 47-member council, giving them an overall majority of one.

There are 19 Liberal Democrat opposition councillors, three Conservatives and one independent.

Labour would lose its majority on the council if another candidate wins the election.

The candidates standing in the Heworth by-election:

  • Anna Perrett, Labour.
  • Ben Ffrench, Green.
  • Emma Dolben, Conservative.
  • Emma Hardy, independent.
  • Ian Eiloart, Liberal Democrats.
  • John Crispin-Bailey, Reform.

Polls are set to open at 7am on the day of the election, with voters able to cast their ballots until 10pm.

People who are not registered to vote can do so online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by calling 01904 551007.

Eligible electors can cast their votes in person at the polling stations on their polling card, by post or via a proxy.

Applications for postal votes can be submitted until 5pm on Tuesday, December 30.

The deadline for applying to vote by proxy, where someone else votes on an elector’s behalf, is 5pm on Tuesday, December 30.

Emergency proxy vote applications can be made in certain circumstances at West Offices, in Station Rise, until 5pm on polling day.

People voting in person are required to bring a valid, accepted photo ID to be able to cast their ballots.

People without an accepted form of ID or who do not want to use their ID can apply for a free voter authority certificate.

The deadline for voter authority cerificate applications is 5pm on Wednesday, January 7.
