York Racecourse to expand accommodation for stable staff

The team, based at the Stables at York Racecourse (known as Stableside), will host a meeting with their neighbours in order to discuss plans to expand accommodation for stable staff.

They are proposing to add 29 new ensuite bedrooms at its facility to support the growing number of grooms and staff travelling with horses during the racing season.

This expansion follows a refurbishment of its existing 25 rooms in 2020 and would would convert the site’s L-shaped layout into a U-shape, with expanded kitchen and common areas.

The project also aims to achieve net-zero construction and will include solar panels and rainwater harvesting as part of its environmental commitments.

It would also mean improved accommodation for visiting school parties and weekend visitors, outside of the racedays.

A public drop-in event will be held on Tuesday, December 16, from 4.30pm to 6pm, giving residents the chance to view plans, tour existing rooms, and ask questions.

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: “We have been delighted to welcome a record number of horses in each of the last two seasons.

“It is important for the welfare of the horses that their grooms are nearby and it is important for the welfare of those grooms that we do this properly, meaning ensuite, single occupancy bedrooms.

“This plan would allow us to offer a world class experience to both horse and human visitors.”

They also added that homemade cakes will be served during the meeting.
