York secondary reunion raises hundreds for Candlelighters
People who previously attended St George’s RC Secondary Modern School gifted Candlelighters – a charity supporting families affected by childhood cancer – after their annual reunion on Friday (November 28).
The well-attended event, held at NHS Sports and Social Club in York, commemorated 40 years since the school closed for the final time in 1985.

One of the event’s organisers, Tom Sweeney, said: “This year’s chosen charity was children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.
“One hundred pounds was given, once again, by one Old Boy – who wishes to remain anonymous – with a further £100 given by the St George’s Old Boys’ group.
“We also fell upon a short campaign called the ‘Big Give’ which doubled the donation to £400 – a huge bonus.”
Tom said the group would be “cutting back” on the event’s buffet next year, but would include the annual raffle – with all proceeds going to a charity of the Old Boys’ choice.
He said: “Next year’s reunion is already booked for Friday (November 27) in 2026.
“While looking forward to next year we wish all St. Georges Old Boys and their families the Happiest of Christmases’ and a Happy and Healthy 2026.”
