I tried adults-only, all-inclusive holiday resort in UK & was won over by activities & night-time shows

Give rowing on the boating lake a try

WHEN I think of family holidays as a child, my mind instantly wanders to Potters Resorts in Hopton-on-Sea.

The happy memories include sports games on the green fields and my best X Factor-style audition in the children’s talent competition.

So, when I heard about Potters recently-opened Five Lakes, at Maldon, Essex, which is exclusively for adults, I couldn’t wait to book in.

How would the “all grown-ups” version compare to my cheery childhood holidays?

The 320-acre resort is home to five lakes and an 18-hole golf course – and it offers just as much entertainment for the adults.

I was always too busy having fun to pay much attention to the bedrooms as a kid.

But my premier plus room at Five Lakes, which included two very comfortable single beds with plenty of pillows, did not disappoint.

‘Blissful serenity’

Despite having opened more than two years ago, everything felt exceptionally clean, with ample space for mum and me on our girly weekend away.

After dumping our bags, our first port of call was the bar, to plot an itinerary from the never-ending list of on-site activities (and to sample the cocktails).

What do you need to do to ensure your passport is OK for travel?

Over the next few days, we’d be practising our aim in archery lessons, unleashing our inner child at rally karting and even having a go at indoor shooting (I won myself a medal!).

Each activity is around a 10-15 minute walk from the main resort, but there are golf buggy “taxis” at reception if you don’t fancy the stroll.

There are more zen-like activities, too, for the less adventurous, such as yoga, pottery painting and bracelet making, all run by patient, professional and fun instructors.

The only downside is that there is no online booking system so be prepared to queue sometimes.

Generous buffets where you can help yourself are laid out for each meal, including, pastries, cereal and a fry up in the morning; sandwiches and salads plus buffet-style hot food for lunch; and everything from curry to roast dinners in the evening.

The special thing about Potters is that you’re served by the same waitress or waiter throughout your long weekend, so if you flag any special requirements, they will be remembered for each meal.

After dinner every night, crowds spill into the Glade Theatre for interactive games and West End-quality performances with dancers from all over the world.

The level of talent in that room was not something you’d expect to see in a resort in the middle of Essex.

The fun did not stop there, either. After each show, the resort puts on a silent disco, blasting everything from today’s top hits to old school classics through headphones.

Luckily, the bar stays open until late, so the drinks can keep on flowing – and the best part is the midnight buffet, providing late-night snacks for the hardcore dancers.

With a slightly sore head the following morning, I decided to treat myself to a back and scalp massage – one of the best I have ever had and worth every penny (£53 for 40 minutes).

The gentle pummelling seemed to ease all the tension in my entire body, so by the time I rejoined my mum in the main spa (she was taking advantage of the sauna, steam room and hot tub), I was in a state of blissful serenity.

Is it possible that a Potters Resorts getaway is even better as an adult? It might just be.

Living Like a Rock Star at Munich’s Bayerischer Hof Hotel

Published

on

All Images credit Bayerischer Hof Hotel

As the legendary German writer Thomas Mann once said, “Munich is a city that lives in the heart of the world.” Staying at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel is an embodiment of this sentiment, where the heart of the city beats in every corner. Here, the past and present are woven together, offering a fascinating contrast of grandeur and modern vibrance. The hotel’s classical white interiors set the stage for a refined, timeless atmosphere, while its impeccable service delivers the kind of luxury that feels almost indulgent. Yet, beyond the tradition and history, the Bayerischer Hof reveals a surprising, rock star-like energy—where elegance collides with unexpected flair, creating an unforgettable experience.

A Legacy of German Hospitality

Founded in 1841 by architect Friedrich von Gärtner, under the patronage of Bavarian King Ludwig I, the Bayerischer Hof swiftly became Munich’s premier address for state guests. Its distinguished visitors included Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Sigmund Freud, while Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria famously met his love, ballet dancer Antonia, here in secret.

In more modern times, the hotel’s guestbook continues to read like a who’s who of global entertainment and politics. The Beatles, during their 1960s tour, famously had a pillow fight in their suite, leaving the staff with a memorable (and messy) cleanup. Michael Jackson’s stay in 1998 with his family became legendary, further immortalized by a fan-created memorial to Flemish composer Orlande de Lassus across the street. Celebrities from Franz Kafka to Daniel Craig, Lenny Kravitz, and Luciano Pavarotti have also graced its halls, ensuring the Bayerischer Hof’s status as more than just a hotel.

While the hotel remains tight-lipped about many of its VIP guests, it’s no secret that luminaries like John F. Kennedy and Muhammad Ali have spoken fondly of the place, as have countless others.

A Secretive Tradition

In addition to these colorful anecdotes, the hotel hosts the prestigious Munich Security Conference each year, where politicians, diplomats, and experts from around the world convene to discuss critical security matters. The discreet nature of these gatherings reflects the hotel’s long-standing tradition of guarding its secrets, adding another layer to its enigmatic appeal.

The Picasso Heist

An intriguing chapter in the hotel’s storied history occurred in 1989, when Picasso’s Tête de Femme was stolen from the lobby. Despite the hotel’s security measures, the thief vanished with the artwork, and its whereabouts remain a mystery to this day—a curious footnote in a hotel filled with far more glamorous episodes.

The Bayerischer Hof’s decor pays homage to its heritage with Louis XVI-style barometers, Louis Philippe armchairs, and rich jacquard floral bedspreads. Yet it’s also a place where tradition gives way to the modern: contemporary design elements like wood, concrete, and clean lines stand in juxtaposition to the opulence of its past.

Luxurious Accommodations

The hotel offers 340 rooms, each reflecting a different design aesthetic. The pinnacle of luxury is the €15,000-per-night penthouse suite, with a private entrance, rooftop gym, sauna, and sweeping views of Munich’s skyline.

The suite’s panoramic windows allow guests to take in the city’s spires, parks, and streets, while a private terrace offers a secluded space to unwind with a sunset toast. With marble bathrooms, bespoke art, and cutting-edge amenities, it’s more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience.

Michelin Star Dining

Dining at the Bayerischer Hof is an experience in itself. The Blue Spa rooftop restaurant offers Bavarian specialties like white sausage, pretzels, and deep-fried donuts in the morning, while the evening presents the opportunity to relax in the spa’s sauna and enjoy the expansive Munich view.

For a more elevated culinary experience, Atelier Restaurant, with its three Michelin stars, offers a modern twist on French cuisine. The concrete and wood interior exudes youthful vibrancy, and the dishes are nothing short of artistic. Highlights include perfectly roasted venison with chanterelles and rich Chartreuse jus, and a delicate Japanese hamachi served with a miso-ponzu glaze—flavors that blend artistry with craftsmanship.

Cocktails and Historic Atmosphere

For cocktails, there’s no shortage of options. Trader Vic’s, with its Polynesian charm, offers exotic drinks in an island-inspired setting, while Falk’s Bar, nestled in the hotel’s historic Hall of Mirrors, exudes a glamorous, intimate vibe where history seems to linger in every mahogany panel.

Spa and Wellness

The Blue Spa, located just below the penthouse, is a sanctuary of tranquility, with a rooftop pool offering stunning views of the city. Designed by French interior designer Andrée Putman, the spa’s minimalist aesthetic and avant-garde furnishings provide a perfect contrast to the hotel’s more traditional elements, adding to the sense of timeless luxury.

A Cultural Hub

As much a cultural landmark as a hotel, the Bayerischer Hof regularly hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and international events, making it a central part of Munich’s cultural scene. Its prime location offers easy access to iconic sites such as Marienplatz and the vibrant Viktualienmarkt.

For me, staying at the Bayerischer Hof felt like stepping into a living legend. Every corridor, and every room holds echoes of a glamorous past, whispering stories of illustrious guests and historic events. This isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s a time capsule, a stage where dreams have been made and memories forged.

No matter your age or background, the Bayerischer Hof continues to be a beloved icon—Munich’s own rock star, forever etched in the hearts of all who visit. Its ageless appeal reflects the devotion of those who have passed through its doors, ensuring that, in 2024, it remains as cherished and adored as ever.

One of the world’s oldest Center Parcs resorts has new farm experience and water playhouse

One of the world's oldest Center Parcs has two new attractions

ONE of the first Center Parcs to ever open has two new attractions.

While Brits may think of the holiday resort in the UK, it actually started in the Netherlands.

De Huttenheugte was one of the first Center Parcs resorts to open.

The very first Center Parcs was De Lommerbergen, also in the Netherlands, which opened in 1968.

However, this was sold off in 1996.

De Huttenheugte opened in 1972 and remains as a Center Parcs resort.

Read more on Center Parcs

The woodland resort has a huge lake as well as a beach to explore

The indoor waterpark Aqua Mundo has two slides and a wild water rapid as well as a wave pool and outdoor pool section.

New to the park is the Water Playhouse, with platforms, slides, water pistols and water buckets.

Also new at the park is the Experience Farm, where kids can “explore the natural environment”.

Otherwise there are nearly 100 other activities including golf, high ropes, kids safari trucks, scavenger hunts, workshops and boating

Inside activities include go karts, arcades, trampolines, silent discos and and shows.

There is even a nearby beach included in the booking right on the lake.

And for food and drink, there are six restaurants as well as a supermarket and shops for clothes, beauty and gifts.

You can stay at the resort with cottages ranging from two to eight people.

Or there is the themed Wonders of Nature Cottage, where you can “follow the footsteps of two nature researchers”.

Don#t want to stay the night? You can book day passes which includes access to the waterpark, shops, restaurants, activities such as laser bag, abseiling, mini golf and playgrounds.

The best way to get there from the UK is to fly to Amsterdam Schipol airport, with flights taking just over an hour and starting from £14.99.

A new Center Parcs holiday resort is opening in the UK on the Scottish borders.

The £400million resort will have 700 lodges as well as the indoor waterpark.

But if you do fancy going abroad, you could save as much as £1,000 per holiday.

Mum reveals how to do a cheaper Center Parcs trip in Europe

Mum Catherine Lofthouse visited a Netherlands Center Parcs to save money.

We paid just £680 for a week’s stay, for five of us in a lodge.

We booked in the summer for an Easter break with our lodge five minutes from both the beach and the pool and two minutes from the soft play.

The extra activities seemed cheaper than you would pay in the UK.

We even opted for a couple of free activities, including a beach litter pick, which was a fun way to spend an hour looking after the environment, and toasting marshmallows over a fire pit.

Another trick to make your holiday money go further is to keep an eye on the Too Good To Go app, which offers reduced price food that’s coming to the end of its sell-by date.

The Center Parcs supermarket was offering a bag of food most days for just €4.99 (£4) with a BBQ meat pack, veggie mince, squash, biscuits and snacks.

Research earlier this year found that a trip to the German Center Parcs, Park Nordseeküste, was £957 cheaper in October half term than the UK Center Parcs.

Or wait until next year, with Center Parcs Nordborg opening in Denmark, the first in the country.

Pretty English region to be the ‘next Cotswolds’ named one of the world’s top 2025 destinations to visit

Published

Sussex - home to placed like Brighton - has been named a top 2025 desintation

A REGION in the UK has been named one of the best places to visit in the world.

Sussex was named one of Conde Nast Traveller’s 25 Best Places to Go.

Sussex - home to placed like Brighton - has been named a top 2025 desintation

The region joined other stunning places including Cuba, Marseille, Greenland and Uganda in the hot list.

Trying to decide on the list, they said: “Twenty-five places that, no questions asked, our editors would jump at the opportunity to visit next year [and] places we want you to know about, before your TikTok feed is swimming in them.

“[They are] places that speak to our values as travellers in 2025, be it innovation in conservation, astounding creativity, or a profound sense of human connection.”

But the website raved about both East and West Sussex, with some hotels “set to be as fashionable in 2025 as it was in its 19th-century heyday when Turner and Constable were regulars”.

Brighton was named its “seaside star” with new hotels including 124 Brighton and even a new lido last year.

An insider told them: “The area is a hotbed of creatives, with designer Martin Brudnizki, florist Millie Proust, and Mumford & Sons’ Ted Dwane all living nearby.”

When asked if it could become the new Cotswolds they said: “You never know – we’ve certainly got plenty more vineyards.”

You can explore the Sussex coastline along the recently opened King Charles III England Coast Path.

This runs all the way from Shoreham-by-Sea to Eastbourne.

Here are some of the best places you can visit across Sussex, according to Sun writers…

Goring-by-Sea

“Goring-by-sea is a small and relatively suburban neighbourhood with quality brunch spots, charming seafront walks and a restful atmosphere.

It is far less busy than the better-known Sussex coastal towns of Littlehampton, Worthing and Bognor Regis so don’t expect packed beaches and busy restaurants.

Unlike other traditional seasides, you won’t find arcades or roller coaster-filled piers here either.

Camber Sands

Camber Sands is famous for its beautiful sand dunes and seven miles of beach

Fans of films The Monuments Men and The Theory Of Everything will recognise the beach, used to film parts of them.

Brighton

Brighton’s cobbles are lined with colourful shops and misshapen signs swinging from old doorways, with many dating back to the 16th century.

“Make sure to stay at The Southern Belle, a great boutique hotel further west along the seafront.

The best spots to eat are the Rockwater Hove – the place to go for unbeatable views of the ocean fresh seafood – The Salt Room, another seafront restaurant.

Sophie Swietochowski

Rye

Despite having a harbour, Rye isn’t a seaside town – but it still has cute cobbled streets, quaint antique shops and cosy pubs.

The best one is the Mermaid Inn, with parts of the pub dating back to 1156, although Giant’s Fireplace Bar also makes you feel like you are stepping back in time.

Don’t forget to head to Knoops which serves up some of the best hot chocolate around the UK, but was founded in Rye by a ‘chocolate sommelier’.

Visitors to the French theme park will watch live singers perform beloved classics and contemporary hits from Disney Animation and Pixar animated films.

A wide range of songs will be performed from “a pop/rock concert featuring Disney’s greatest hits to Minnie Mouse’s parade with her marching band, and the sunny melodies of Moana“.

The new music festival will take place “all across the park” – with exact locations yet to be announced.

Disney Music Festival is set to launch on April 19, 2025 and will run until September 7, 2025, with further details to follow.

Theme park fans won’t have to wait until next spring for a new attraction though, with another new offering launching in January.

Disney Tales of Magic has been described as a “new innovative and immersive nighttime spectacular”.

Debuting on January 10, 2025, the 20-minute show will immerse guests in a unique sensory journey through some of Disney Animation and Pixar’s most beloved stories.

Famous Disney characters and scenes will be projected onto Main Street USA and the Disney Castle or the first time ever.

Cutting-edge technology, including drones, projections, laser technology, pyrotechnics and fountain displays, have been used to create the new nighttime show.

A new soundscape has been recorded for Disney Tales of Magic.

New Disney Adventure cruise ship reveals huge central garden

Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris, commented: “At Disneyland Paris, we’ve always strived to push the boundaries of what’s possible in nighttime entertainment, and Disney Tales of Magic takes that vision even further.

“Our teams have crafted something truly magical, an experience that will captivate and inspire guests for years to come.

“Building on our legacy of innovation, creativity, and storytelling, we’re excited for this show to become a lasting part of the story of Disneyland Park.”

Earlier this year, Disneyland Paris revealed a brand-new named for its second park – as well as a new ride and an immersive world.

The new additions are part of a multi-billion-pound investment at the theme park that will see Walt Disney Studio Parks being renamed Disney Adventure World.

Part of the rebranding includes a transformed new entrance area, with an “open-air movie studio” where guests will be taken to a “a glamorous film premiere in the heart of Hollywood on a starry night”.

The new entrance, named World Premier, will open spring 2025 and will let guests enter the World Premiere Plaza,

Also new will be Adventure Way, a garden inspired promenade with The Regal View Restaurant and Lounge.

Last year, an English-themed pub opened at Disneyland Paris, called The Royal Pub.

Other Disney parks are getting new attractions too, with a new €2billion land set to open at Disneyland in California.

What is the new Disneyland Hotel like?

THE Sun’s Head of Travel Lisa Minot was one of the first to visit the new Disneyland Paris resort.

“When the hotel closed in April 2021, the fairy-tale building that spans the entrance to Disneyland Paris was taken back to bare concrete and rebuilt from the bottom up.

“The result is the only 5-star hotel in the world dedicated to Disney royalty.

“It’s a palatial celebration of all Disney Princesses – and their Princes – from Frozen’s Queen Elsa to Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and more.

“The ultimate treat for all wannabe Disney Princesses and Princes is the My Royal Dream makeover, where little ones can become their heroines or heroes.

“And the 487 rooms and suites are all designed to immerse you in the classic Disney characters.

“There’s even a Disneyland Hotel Cuvée champagne, produced especially for the hotel by the Maison Pierre Mignon.”
