About to leave for our scheduled tour of Hobbiton, the charming film location of the Shire, home to Frodo and company, disaster struck.
Approaching our car, I noticed the rear tire was completely flat, the result of a nail puncture. And the spare was too thin to get us there.

To make matters worse, it was our last day in New Zealand’s Waikato region so we couldn’t re-schedule. Seeing my wife’s downcast face, Hobbiton being the holiday highlight she’d been most looking forward to, I felt helpless.
That’s when staff at our hotel, Hidden Lake in Cambridge on the North Island, went into action.

Within minutes, not one but four members of staff were hard at work to save the day, two working the phones, one to find a garage, the other to see what time Hobbiton closed and if we could change our scheduled tour time, while two others rushed to the car to replace the flat tire with the reserve to get us to whatever nearby garage might be open.
Unfortunately, the first two garages contacted were too busy to help and as the minutes ticked by, all seemed lost. But aside from being a patient and kind host, hotel manager, Rajwinder Kaur, a native of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, is also a very persistent woman. Finally, looking up at our forlorn faces, she smiled. “I found one.”

This incident encapsulates the pedigree of people my wife and I were fortunate to meet on a two-night stay at this attractive family-run hotel.
Owned and operated by Chris Turner, an agricultural machine specialist, and his wife, Glenda, a former teacher, the 37-room hotel sits beside a lake partially hidden by a forest of maple, oak and Japanese cherry, a relaxing place where Glenda and her family would enjoy weekend getaways, thus the inspiration for the hotel’s name.

After leasing the building, the couple opened the hotel three years ago offering their services to both tourists and corporate clients from the nearby horse stud farms, glass manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

Our room was a comfortable one featuring a small balcony overlooking the forest with furnishings that included a large wall TV, an armchair, tea and coffee-making facilities, a mini-bar and a glass-enclosed shower.
Being environmentally conscious, pillows and duvets were made from recycled plastic, any solar energy the hotel doesn’t use is donated to the township of Cambridge, dispensers are used instead of single soaps and guests have options in their rooms to separate recyclable material from waste.

Food at the Hidden Lake Hotel is of the highest quality, with much of the produce used either coming from her uncle’s farm or the local farmer’s market.

Both dinner and breakfast are served in D’Arcy’s restaurant with views over the forest from the second floor. The latter featured a tasty whipped avocado dish comprising local goat cheese, poached eggs with focaccia and za’atar, a mix of Levantine herbs such as sesame, sumac and other spices.

The menu also featured classic eggs Benedict, Chinese bolognese, brioche French toast with mascarpone, poached pear, bacon and honey, as well as the full breakfast of bacon, chipolata, hash browns, toast and cherry tomato or Poppa’s porridge with caramelized banana, brown sugar and cream and Bircher muesli with coconut and plum. The hot chocolate I tasted, offered with or without marshmallows, was deliciously smooth and creamy.

Dinner was similarly diverse with my wife choosing starters of seared scallops and I green lipped mussels in a creamy turmeric sauce followed by mains of tagliatelle and salmon.

Kudos also go to Chris and Glenda for their innovative cocktail menu, many created by them, often reflecting real-life situations. The Lockdown Delta Variant, for example, emerged out of Covid, and comprises gin, blood orange, Bergamot, lemon juice, Aquafaba and orange bitters, all topped with tonic water. Another cocktail, Smoky Linen, emerged from an incident when a tea towel caught fire. It consists of Bailey’s, Kahlua, white and dark chocolate and creme de cacao and milk, topped, of course, with a smoky charred marshmallow.

Within easy walking distance of charming downtown Cambridge, the Hidden Lake Hotel is also a convenient stopover for tourists visiting Hobbiton, a 30-minute drive away through rolling countryside, as well as to Hamilton with its stunning, 54-hectare public garden and the geothermal park with its dramatic geysers, bubbling mud and Maori cultural experiences at Te Puia Rotorua.

A Stay at La Jolla’s Landmark “Pink Lady” La Valencia Hotel Will Always be in Style

La Valencia’s swimming pool is nothing short of breathtaking. Overlooking the La Jolla Shoreline and framed by palm trees and tropical plants, it’s the perfect place to while away an afternoon or entire day on one of the plush sun loungers, which are interspersed with side tables and wide sun umbrellas, enjoying food and beverage service (think ahi poke nachos, Mediterranean flatbread, and seared local bluefin tuna salad, plus Frosé All Day cocktails) from the poolside cabana bar. COOLA sun care products are available, and complimentary Wi-Fi can keep you connected if you need to WFP (‘Work From Pool’). There’s a private hot tub area, too, but much like the rest of the hotel, the entire terrace offers epic Pacific Ocean views.

There might be no prettier place to land on yoga mats and salute the sun than La Valencia’s ocean-view El Jardin where the hotel will be hosting an hour-long Vinyasa yoga class every Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. through September 30. Complimentary for hotel guests and $25 for a local drop-in rate, it’s led by Dr. Austin Shutler with mats, towels and bottled water all provided. Mark calendars for Breast Cancer Awareness Month programs in October, which include the hotel’s third annual Pink Tea Series and this year’s Poolside Movie, ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (October 12), with a portion of proceeds from both going to benefit Susan G. Komen San Diego.
New Chef, New Menus
La Valencia Hotel recently appointed executive chef Alex Pailles to redefine the dining experience across its three restaurants: the Mediterranean Room, Med Patio, and glamorous La Sala lobby bar. After a nearly decade-long tenure at The Marine Room, Pailles also brings a wealth of fine dining experience from his time at the Michelin-starred Xerta Restaurant in Barcelona to the fore. Drawing on his Mexican heritage, Pailles has created complex flavor journeys using hyper-local ingredients across dishes, including sweetwater prawns with aroz bomba and a tataki tuna crudo with cactus fruit aguachile, both of which can be found on the Mediterranean Room menu. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with brunch served on weekends, score a table on The Med’s Ocean View Terrace for the prettiest dining backdrop in La Jolla. But for a post-yoga breakfast or early evening glass of Champagne swing by La Sala Lounge and nab a window seat for cinematic views.

La Valencia Hotel fixture since 1949, historic lounge the Whaling Bar reopened in February after a $1.5 million renovation led by the SDCM Restaurant Group (of Kettner Exchange in Little Italy and standout speakeasies Grass Skirt and Captain’s Quarters). A 20-foot mural and original centerpiece, ‘Whale’s Last Stand,’ by Wing Howard anchors the intimate space, whose Moroccan-style interior and intimate ambiance are reminiscent of a 1940s cocktail lounge. Open daily from 11am to 11:30pm, menus have been created with nods to the original Whaling Bar and feature ‘Martini Hour’ nightcap cocktails like The Whaler (composed with cognac, coffee liqueur and homemade ice cream) alongside lunch and dinner dishes conceived by executive chef Brian Redzikowski that span Osetra Caviar with buckwheat pancakes, a ‘dip’ lobster roll, and Caesar ‘Twinkie’ salad.

The New Marriott Autograph Hotel – The Asher Adams

This hotel– Asher Adams– was named after the first cartographers to depict railroad lines on their maps. It is the new luxury hotel, transforming the historic 1908 Union Pacific railroad passenger station into a 225-room Marriott Autograph Collection hotel.
Located in The Gateway, a large, open-air retail, residential, and office complex in Salt Lake City, Utah, it is centered on the historic Union Pacific Depot now transformed into the new hotel Marriott Asher Adams on the west side of downtown Salt Lake City. Asher Adams is just steps from the TRAX Light Rail and the Delta Center, the place where the Utah Jazz Basketball Team plays, and with quick access to Temple Square, the SLC International Airport, and surrounding amenities.
Paying homage to the building’s history, Marriott transformed the former Union Pacific Depot into a fresh new space, serving as the first luxury lifestyle hotel of its kind in Salt Lake City. The hotel will feature three bars and signature restaurant, Rouser, which will be host to an upscale menu cooked with charcoal grilling techniques, paying tribute to the coal-powered train engines.
THKS Architects and JNS Design further repurposed the historic boundaries of the old train station with a preservation-driven design. They preserved the train station’s French empire architecture as it brings the new hotel space into the 21st Century. The sandstone building was originally architected in the French Second Empire style and included a terrazzo floor and stained-glass windows. What remains, among other architectural details, are two upper wall murals —one called Driving The Golden Spike by San Francisco artist John MacQuarrie in 1909, depicting the driving of the Golden Spike north of Salt Lake City at Promontory Summit, signifying the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869. The other mural on the opposite side of the building is called Emigrants Entering Salt Lake Valley, by John MacQuarrie & August C. Wocker, completed in 1909. It shows the 1847 arrival of Mormon pioneers, traveling through Emigrant Canyon into what is now Salt Lake City. Both can be seen in the Asher Adam’s Grand Hall.
The Asher Adam’s commitment to preserve architectural heritage while embracing the highest level of modern hospitality can also be felt from the original stained-glass windows to the grand lobby. Inspired by the connecting railways through Utah that brought a new cultural identity to the region, the property will continue by also being home to an array of contemporary artists, and further interior design details that add Salt Lake history to this contemporary building, which was once The Union Depot, or Union Pacific Depot building as it became known in 1921. It functioned as a railroad station well into the 1970s and for a short time was an Amtrak station as well. But now, it has been redesigned into a Marriott Autograph hotel, combining an historic past with a lively present.
Also, Asher Adams’ culinary concepts bring new offerings to Salt Lake City. From the dishes to the décor, the building’s history will be apparent throughout the dining experience. Inspired by the coal-fueled train engines, the grill, oven, and rotisserie will be charcoal-inspired, to impart historic flavor throughout. As further homage to train dining, the property’s culinary concepts are all designed to emulate the function of the dining car. Rouser is the signature restaurant, as mentioned above, is the fine-dining restaurant, and a homage to the dining car where train guests gather for an upscale meal. Counterpart is another dining experience, emulating the club car, designed for a quick meal or coffee. Finally, the bar car— focuses on the three on-property bars including Bar at Asher Adams & No.119. Whether guests are looking for a whiskey tasting or a charcoal-grilled seafood meal, the property’s culinary offerings will allow the past to inform the present in terms of culinary experience.
Finally, the location of Asher Adams is also important, as it appears to be close to many entertainment venues. Situated across from The Delta Center, guests at Asher Adams will have access to entertainment from Utah Jazz games to Park City – forty minutes away– with the many Sundance Film Festival theaters. The guests will also be near the City Creek Center, and shopping at luxury stores from Nordstrom, Louis Vuitton to Tiffany & Co to Swarovski.
As the Peter Allen song goes, “Everything Old Is New Again.” It is certainly well-defined by this past informing the present Marriott Hotel space.

Algarve Mansion Transformed Into Beach-side Bela Vista Hotel

Every tile tells a story.
Or at least that’s the situation at the 5-star Bela Vista Hotel & Spa in Portimão on Portugal’s Algarve coast.
Century-old hand-painted tiles adorn the walls of this 38-room hotel, none more so than on the ornate wooden staircase leading up to the bedrooms. Here, a series of intricately designed tiles illustrate one of Portugal’s most respected books, The Lusiads, an epic poem written by Luis Vaz de Camoes about Portugal’s ‘golden age’ of discovery.

Elsewhere, an aptly-named ‘tile room’ depicts the arrival in Brazil by 16th century explorer, Vasco da Gama, while religious scenes such as the Last Supper are illustrated in other rooms.
The intricate tile work throughout the hotel is the legacy of the original owners of this 1908 building, once a stately family home. Only in 1934 was it transformed into a hotel, now expanded to 38 rooms, 10 in the main building, 21 in what are termed ‘garden rooms’ and seven in the ‘blue house,’ both on the same grounds.

Beautiful tile work is not the only impressive artistic feature of Bela Vista. Ceilings are carved from Brazilwood, a rare variety now protected. There is also a vintage piano in the main lobby dating from 1855.

Bela Vista, as the name suggests, occupies an envious position overlooking the ocean and Praia da Rocha (Beach of the Rocks). In many ways, the hotel is reminiscent of the 1950s Amalfi coast, a white ‘ivory tower’ like structure insulated from the busy hubbub of the streets just beyond its sturdy iron-wrought gates and with an interior design bright with colors, a vivid blue and white on chairs and cupboards and sunny yellow bedspreads.

Our room, 102, was refreshingly decorated in hues of blue, yellow and white with tiles featuring a floral motif covering part of the walls. It also featured a wood-floored balcony with whicker armchairs overlooking the long stretch of beach.

Even the bathroom, with tub and shower and l’Occitane and Guerlain toiletries, granted clear views over the beach and ocean. A floor-to ceiling linen curtain kept the room dark at night. Two armchairs and a coffee table, a bench and chair and a wall TV were among room furnishings.

Dining highlight of a stay at this hotel is its Michelin star restaurant, Vista.
Guests are granted a short pre-dinner tour of the basement kitchen where they meet executive chef Joao Oliveira from Porto and his team of seven chefs, as well as a visit to the wine cellar.

The kitchen renovated five years ago has a special chef’s table for two for unique dining experiences.
Beside the kitchen is a wine cellar with, according to sommelier, Tiago Samarro, 800 different vintages, most from Portugal but also from countries such as Spain, New Zealand and Italy, all kept under constant room temperature. The oldest wine is a mid-1960s vintage.

A ‘tactile’ menu, including grains of sand affixed to it, is provided to guests, created by local artist, Inês Barracha, followed by a jigsaw-like miniature map of three Algarvian regions indicating from which products for the restaurant’s 11-course pescatarian tasting menu are sourced.
Our dinner began with a veritable explosion of taste, a marble-size, lime-green ball filled with a liquid blend of horseradish, ginger and apple that simply blasted flavour throughout my mouth.

Innovative dishes that followed included violet shrimp (camarao listado), a thin sheet of rice flour with the shell of a shrimp imprinted on it.
Another was a tomato dish comprising marinated cherry tomatoes from Quinta Das Castelhanas, a local farm, three tomato gels flavored with yuzu, camomile and Moroccan lemon combined with garlic flowers and capuchinha (aquatic leaves) and a sprinkling of ‘tomato water,’ all sprayed with camomile-infused vinegar.
A langoustine from Sagres slightly roasted and decorated with flowers of pickled cauliflower and an emulsion of white grape was also among the culinary offerings.

Our dinner also included turbot and anchovies and delicious sourdough bread with olive oil from the hotel owners’ grove, Daniel Proença de Carvalho (DPC).
Even the butter on the menu is far from standard fare – being a blend of goat, cow and sheep milk, according to Neuza, our gastronomic guide for the evening.

A second restaurant is the Bistro. In season, it is outside on a poolside patio facing the beach and sea; offseason, in the elegant ambience of the bar area with a mosaic floor and what can best be described as three-dimensional wall paintings – some featuring parakeets perched on keys in a cage; others, a system of mirrors that seemed quite nautical on a background of broken coconut shells.

A furnishing highlight is the ceiling of Brazilwood beams, deftly painted in a leaf and grape filigree.
Here we enjoyed Portuguese cod fish cakes, fresh cheese, mushrooms and thyme ravioli with celery broth and extra virgin olive oil; langoustine and scallops carpaccio with champagne and Ossetra caviar designed as a rosette reminiscent of a cactus flower like the ones on the hills nearby, formed by thin petals of langoustine and scallops, layered, with a pistil of caviar and surrounded by a smooth, champaign and butter sauce.
