‘It’s a double whammy!’ Britons react furiously to threat as one declares ‘Labour has it in for us’

Bromley residents have poured scorn on suggestions the triple lock should be scrapped.

It comes amid a new row with Kemi Badenoch saying the Tories will consider means-testing the triple lock, while Labour’s new pensions minister once proposed scrapping it.

GB News spoke to residents in the Greater London Town to gauge how such a development would be received.

“The whole idea of the triple lock was to make sure that the pensions increase with inflation and everything like that”, one local resident said.

“One of the problems was, much earlier on, pensions never went up with inflation. People who are on pensions were always seeing their pensions reduce in real terms.

“Obviously, when the triple lock came in, which was basically in the coalition government, that was a major improvement for pensioners.”

Another added: “I think every senior citizen would be worried about it because inflation is sadly going up and I can’t see it’s going to come down in the near future.

“It’s a huge concern. It’s concerning because nobody knows how long they’re going to live.”

Another hit out at the Labour Government, who claimed that after the Winter Fuel Allowance cut and now an apparent threat to the triple lock, they ‘have it in’ for pensioners.

“They’ve already taken the heating allowance away”, he said.

“I don’t know why. Probably because not many of them are going to vote for them, I suppose.”

Another Briton said the winter fuel cut, along with the triple lock threat, is a “double whammy” for pensioners.

“Where’s the money going to come from?”, she asked.

“I’m preparing now for the future. I can’t rely on state pension. I’m getting organised and saving as much as I can to put away for my pensionwhen I get there.”

Labour has refused to rule out means testing the pension triple lock, following controversy sparked by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch’s comments about reviewing the policy.

Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman insisted on Friday that the Prime Minister remains “committed” to the triple lock but would not guarantee its existence in its current form for the entire Parliament.

The debate intensified after Badenoch suggested that redistributing funds from those who “do not need it” was “the sort of thing” her party would examine.

The triple lock ensures state pensions rise by the highest of inflation, average wage increases, or 2.5 per cent.
