Aston Villa 1 Crystal Palace 2: Champions League leaders dumped out of Carabao Cup as struggling Eagles reach quarters

UNAI EMERY’S high-flying Aston Villa were brought crashing back to earth by a Kamada of errors.

Villa had been nigh on unbeatable this season, with mighty Bayern Munich the most impressive notch on the bedpost.

Summer signing Daichi Kamada got the winner for Crystal Palace

But Crystal Palace found a way to humble them…thanks to a hefty slice of suicidal defending from Diego Carlos along the way.

Villa were trying to play it out from the back – don’t they all these days! – but never came close to finding John McGinn on the edge of his own box.

Instead he merely picked out Daichi Kamada, and the Japanese substitute jinked to his right, before firing back and low to his left, right into the bottom corner.

It was Villa’s first – and only – defeat since Arsenal beat them here in their first home game, and they can blame no-one but themselves.

Emery’s men certainly had enough chances to have sealed it long before Kamada’s drive, midway through the second half.

Villa may have been all-change – only John McGinn kicked off both Saturday’s game and this one – but it didn’t stop them creating plenty.

Leon Bailey warmed Matt Turner’s palms by whipping one to his near post, then nearly caught out the Palace keeper with a miss-hit, and that was all inside five minutes.

Yet once a full-strength Palace – and fair play to boss Oliver Glasner for that – steadied the ship, they hit back to snatch the lead.

And when they did, an unwitting contribution from fit-again Tyrone Mings had a sizeable role in the build-up.

Mings was playing his first game since smashing his ACL in the opening game of LAST season 810 days ago, and clearly still some way off match fitness.

Although that didn’t have a hand in Eberi Eze’s goal, it was more ill fortune when Adam Wharton’s ball struck the Villa centre back on the head and fell for Dani Munoz.

He delivered the perfect ball for Eze, who had peeled off into space and bulleted a header into the bottom corner.

Maybe it was the slap in the face Villa needed to spark them into life, or perhaps just a case of that new look line-up syncing with each other.

Although Palace admittedly weren’t helped by losing both Eze AND Wharton to injuries before we’d even reached half an hour, the latter leading to Kamada’s introduction.

Whatever the reason, Unai Emery’s men finally found their feet and pretty soon found the way to the Palace net as well.

Bouba Kamara started it by robbing Kamada and lofting a lovely pass to Leon Bailey on the right.

When he pulled it back, Jhon Duran swung a boot, and keeper Turner was left beating the ground in frustration, knowing he should have made a better fist of stopping it.

Duran then went close with a typical rampaging run and thundering angled strike which had Turner going full length to push away.

But he wasn’t quite as controlled with a wild swipe as Kosta Nedeljkovic’s strike pinballed to him in the box, thrashing it a yard wide.

Certainly nothing like the precision Kamada showed in picking out the corner of Joe Gauci’s net, which ultimately proved enough to ease Palace into the last eight.

'We have 13 players, we are in trouble' - Guardiola fears for Man City

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have “13 players” and are in “trouble” after his side suffered more injuries in the League Cup defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday.

The visitors, already without six first-team players for the game, lost defender Manuel Akanji with a calf issue in the warm up.

Forward Savinho was then taken off on a stretcher in the 63rd minute of the game after appearing to hurt his ankle.

Guardiola also said defender Ruben Dias, who went off at half-time, is “struggling” sometimes.

“We have 13 players, we are in real difficulties,” Guardiola said.

“The guys that play, they finish most of them with problems and we’ll see how they recover.

“I think we are in trouble, because in nine years we’ve never been in the situation with so many injuries.

“The players make a step forward, more together than ever, and we will try to do this week in this short time of recovery.”

She clocked a bit personal best when winning by four lengths here last Monday and is back under a 5lb penalty. She enjoyed the cut in the ground 10 days ago and gets on well with claimer Joe Leavy. This race is no tougher and it will be disappointing if she doesn’t scoot in again for trainer James Evans.

Jhonata Diniz says Derrick Lewis fight ‘a big surprise’

Jhonata Diniz says Derrick Lewis fight ‘a big surprise’

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – Jhonata Diniz didn’t expect to be fighting one of the biggest names in the heavyweight division in just his third UFC appearance, but he’s not complaining.

The undefeated prospect got the call to face former UFC title challenger Derrick Lewis on the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 246. This was shocking for Diniz (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), especially because “The Black Beast” already had an opponent for the event.

“Derrick Lewis is a very big name not just in the UFC, but around the world when you talk about MMA,” Diniz said at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 246 media day. “I really get surprised because he was booked to fight against another fighter. When the UFC came to us and let us know we were the new fighter for Derrick Lewis, it was a big surprise, big surprise, but we’re ready for him.”

Diniz is unsure why Lewis (28-12 MMA, 19-10 UFC) ended up getting an opponent change, but he has a feeling it’s due to the entertainment value he brings to the table.

“I think me vs. Derrick Lewis, this fight won’t go to the last round, and for sure it’s not to be a boring fight,” Diniz said.

Diniz sees the bout with Lewis as a perfect opportunity to show the MMA world that he means business. He plans to do so by putting out the knockout artist.

“I know how important is this fight for me and I know when I knock him out it will put me in another level in this organization,” Diniz explained. “It really represents a lot to me.”

Tottenham 2-1 Man City: Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou could yet keep prize promise after EFL Cup win

Tottenham 2-1 Man City: Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou could yet keep prize promise after EFL Cup win

Stating achievements and then backing them up, especially at Spurs, are two completely different things. But the Carabao Cup now presents a very attractive prospect of that long-overdue and long-awaited success, even though Manchester United will hold similar aspirations, presumably under prospective new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Postecoglou was in desperate need of Spurs showing their acceptable face after one of those displays that demonstrated the madding inconsistency of his team, even from one half to the next when they lost a 2-0 interval lead to go down 3-2 at Brighton, and were then tamely beaten by Crystal Palace last weekend.

A loss to City would have increased scrutiny on Postecoglou, not in the context of his future at the club, but whether his methods and unflinching belief in his all-out attacking strategy could fashion the success he insists it will bring.

Instead, this was the Spurs that has provided such entertaining fare throughout Postecoglou’s time in charge.

Manchester City may not have been at full-strength, with Erling Haaland kept on the bench even when they were chasing an equaliser, but they still had plenty of talent on show and this was a fully-merited win for the hosts.

It was the enigmatic Timo Werner who set them on their way after five minutes with a thumping finish he did not have time to think about – a key factor when it comes to this striker – from a Dejan Kulusevski pass.

Werner’s goal was his first of the season, only his third in 26 appearances for the club, but the manner in which he was swamped by elated team-mates and the reaction of the home fans illustrated that he remains a popular figure. It was the same at Chelsea, amid similar finishing travails, for his sheer boundless endeavour alone.

The “Timo Werner – he scores when he wants” chant that followed was heavily ironic, even if it was good-natured.

Pape Matar Sarr’s crisp finish increased Spurs’ dominance and, even when nerves jangled after Matheus Nunes gave City hope seconds before half-time, Postecoglou’s side maintained their progressive approach.

They created better chances, only surviving one real moment of worry when substitute Yves Bissouma cleared off the line from Nico O’Reilly with two minutes left.

It was no more than Spurs deserved. A late City leveller would have been an injustice as the hosts had their number once more in this magnificent stadium, this being their sixth win in eight games here.

Postecoglou. who has understandably cut a discontented and tetchy figure as Spurs dropped from the brilliance of their 3-0 win at Manchester United to lose so disappointingly at Brighton and Palace, willingly made a rod for his own back, and those of his players, with his own particular “second season syndrome”.

But if Spurs play like this, and of course they have the Europa League as well as the FA Cup to come, then he could easily come good on his promise.

The trick for Postecoglou is to produce the Spurs version against Manchester United and Manchester City, not the one against Brighton or Crystal Palace.

This was the acceptable face of Postecoglou’s Spurs.
