Australia 70-57 England: Roses defeated in Australia series opener

The first game of England’s three-match Test series in Australia ended in a 70-57 defeat by the world champions in Adelaide.

Australia remained in control throughout the game, only being outscored in the third quarter, 18-15.

The Roses, who were denied a first World Cup by Australia in last year’s final, remained competitive throughout despite fielding an inexperienced side that included debutant Lois Pearson, but never led at the end of any quarter.

England last defeated the 12-time world champions in the pool stage of last year’s World Cup in Cape Town.

Their last meeting came in January when the world number ones narrowly defeated the Roses at the Nations Cup.

“We had chances to come back, especially in that third quarter,” England captain Helen Housby told Sky Sports.

“We showed glimpses of some really good stuff, it is now just about solidifying our combinations and get used to playing at this level, as a lot of our girls haven’t played at this level.

“We showed some really good stuff and need to be more consistent.”

The second game will be played in Sydney on Sunday, with the final fixture taking place in Bendigo, Victoria, on Wednesday.

England will then travel to New Zealand for another three-match series, which starts on 29 September in Auckland.

Liverpool injury blow as Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbles off in worrying scenes before England games

LEE CARSLEY suffered a major blow to his final England squad after Trent Alexander-Arnold went off injured in Liverpool’s final game before the international break.

The defender fell to the floor with a hamstring injury in the 24th minute of Liverpool‘s clash against Aston Villa.

He was then replaced by Conor Bradley a minute later.

The injury came just moments after David Coote waved away a penalty appeal for Villa after Ollie Watkins went to ground under a tackle from Ibrahima Konate.

Darwin Nunez had put the hosts ahead after going around goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The 26-year-old has been a key star for the Reds under Arne Slot this season.

Alexander-Arnold has played 14 games in all competitions, including 10 starts in the Premier League.

His exploits have helped put Liverpool top of the league, a position only strengthened after Manchester City lost 2-1 to Brighton earlier in the day.

However, the hamstring injury has also dealt a major blow to Interim England boss Carsley, who will be without his starting right back for Nations League games against Greece and Ireland.

He had previously started in each of the previous four games under Carsley, getting a goal in his last outing from an experimental left-back position and an assist from right-back in the game before.

On Friday, SunSport exclusively revealed how Alexander-Arnold’s contract talks with Liverpool over a new deal were stalling.

This is because Anfield outfit do not want to offer the academy graduate a higher wage than Mohamed Salah, 32, and Virgil van Dijk, 33.

Lee Carsley reveals classy message to Thomas Tuchel and says new England manager has no influence on his squad

His contract with the Reds expires next summer.

But with the club negotiating with all three players over new deals, the matter is complicated.

Liverpool have made several offers to improve Alexander- Arnold’s £180,000-a-week deal amid strong interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Pep Guardiola: ‘Maybe another team deserves to win Premier League’

Pep Guardiola: 'Maybe another team deserves to win Premier League'

Guardiola previously lost three back-to-back games with Bayern Munich, before losing a fourth in a shootout, in the 2014-15 season.

His worse run as City boss had been three successive defeats.

Asked about the current run, Guardiola told Sky Sports: “Two in the Premier League. You have to count the victories and defeats, and we will win a lot.

“If you have to count how many victories in a row, we are far away from that position.”

It is “not nice” to lose two league games in a row, but City are “not far away” from the top of the table, in second place going into the international break, he said.

On Saturday, City took a first-half lead at Brighton through Erling Haaland’s 12th Premier League goal of the season.

The Blues dominated for much of the first half, having 67% possession and five shots on target to Brighton’s zero.

But that flipped after the break to just one on target, to Brighton’s four. City looked lethargic for large periods of the second half as Brighton substitutes Joao Pedro and Matt O’Riley scored to earn the win.

It was the first time City had lost a Premier League game having led at half-time since 2021.

Speaking on Match Of The Day, former City defender Micah Richards said: “The most defining thing for me is not pressing any more. They’re going as individuals.

“When you lose the best midfielder in Europe [Rodri] you’re always going to have a strain on the team. But they are just too easy to play through at this moment in time.”

Guardiola added: “We are not able to do 90 minutes right now.

“We played a really good first half, but we were not able to sustain the rhythm in the second half.

“We lost again so [we will] clear our heads [in the] international break and hopefully our players come back fit.”

In his news conference, Guardiola added: “When the players come back, I don’t have any doubt that we will be back to our best.”

City’s run is tough after the break, with games against Tottenham, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Aston Villa before Christmas.
