England in Pakistan: Ollie Pope, Ben Stokes & Test cricket among five takeaways
The impressive emergence of Brydon Carse is the latest stage in the rebuilding of an England pace attack in a previously unthinkable world without James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
Not everything is about the Ashes but, for this area of the team, that plane journey to Perth in November next year is paramount. Stokes is not the first England captain to put together a long-term plan to have a pace battery down under. He will know plenty before him have arrived for a gun battle armed only with pea shooters.
A year out, there is a long list of names that could find themselves in Australia: Carse, Matthew Potts, Mark Wood, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone, Josh Hull, Dillon Pennington and John Turner.
What about Jofra Archer, whose latest return from injury is being painstakingly managed? It would be joyous to see Archer back in England whites and he has said that is his long-term goal.
How England get him to that point is ticklish. There are tighter restrictions around entering the Indian Premier League auction this year, to mitigate against players dipping in and out of lucrative deals.
For Archer to get back to the Test team, he will surely have to play for Sussex at some point. The most obvious time to do so would be in the early part of the 2025 summer, when the County Championship clashes with the IPL.
Then there is the wildcard, Dan Worrall. The 33-year-old, born in Melbourne and with three Australia ODI caps, qualifies to play for England in the spring thanks to a British passport and three seasons with Surrey. Alec Stewart has likened him to Anderson.
When Kent fast bowler Martin McCague, raised in Western Australia, played for England in the early 1990s the Aussie media called him “the rat that joined the sinking ship”. Just imagine the hullabaloo if Worrall is part of the England squad this time next year.

‘He shouldn’t even be on the pitch’ fume Arsenal fans as Virgil van Dijk escapes red card minutes before equaliser
VIRGIL VAN DIJK equalised for Liverpool at the Emirates – but Arsenal fans raged that he should not have even been on the pitch.
Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in North London with a sublime solo effort on nine minutes.
But just ten minutes later and Van Dijk levelled from a Liverpool corner.
That was after he escaped a red card just five minutes into the game following a collision with Kai Havertz.
The centre-back appeared to twice kick out at Havertz during a tussle as the Arsenal forward went to ground.
So when Van Dijk popped up with the equalising goal – Gooners were not too pleased.
One said: “He shouldn’t even be on the pitch, but let’s save that for later.”
Another added: “So Van Dijk equalises not long after he should have been sent off.
“Any other side would have seen their player off but Livarpool get away with it. Make it make sense.”
One fumed: “Ah. Van Dijk who should’ve been sent off scores. Of course.”

Another raged: “Van dijk should be sent off, doesn’t even go to var and he goes and equalises, the game is f***ing destroyed.”
Arsenal regained their lead before the break with Mikel Merino heading home from Declan Rice’s stunning free-kick cross.

It’s time for better racing guidelines and review procedures in F1
Formula 1 and the FIA now have plenty of material in the wake of the United States Grand Prix to review its racing guidelines “in the interest of the sport”, according to McLaren team principal Andrea Stella.
McLaren failed in its submission of a right of review over the five-second penalty given to Lando Norris, as the FIA upheld its opinion that Norris passed Max Verstappen off-track at Turn 12 on lap 52.
Stella and McLaren believe that Norris had already completed the move on the run to Turn 12 and that Verstappen – in their eyes, now the aggressor – had pushed Norris off the road.
Following the FIA’s decision to deny the right of review, although noting that the “high bar” set out in the right of review regulations was more suited to decisions made with team representatives present, Stella believes that it is now the time to “make a step forward” with the current guidelines.
“We have already made our observations that the guidelines for these driving manoeuvres need review,” Stella said. “This was mainly, I would say, after some of the episodes in Austria already, then I think in Austin definitely.
“We have suggested, either with the right of review or straight after the race in our comments in Austin, that we think the interpretation of the racing between Lando and Max was really unnecessarily at the disadvantage of Lando.
“For us as a team, we leave it to the leadership of the FIA. We have always been respectful, constructive, collaborative with the FIA, we are ready to keep doing that.

“I think the drivers as well have had the chance to express their opinion, and they all agree that there’s quite a bit of work to do. And I think they have also given their opinion on the episode that happened in Austin.
“There’s a lot of material. There’s a lot of information. I think it’s now the time to process this information and take a step forward in the interest of the sport.”
In the aftermath of the race, Stella initially said that the team would accept the decision – but the grey area in interpreting the position of the cars on track meant that McLaren felt it needed to press on with a right-of-review submission.
He explained that McLaren still disagreed with the FIA’s interpretation of the incident, and of its application of “new, significant, and relevant” information, but welcomed the swift resolution from the governing body.
“In terms of my comments straight after the race, related to the fact that we wouldn’t have proceeded with a right of review, they were based on what I knew at the time.
“But after we read the decision, it became very clear that there was an element in the decision, which was an element also in relation to what is required by the International Sporting Code to be a new, relevant, significant element to make the petition successful.
“Reading the decision, it was very clear that the decision included an objective, measurable, provable error, which was the element that we wanted to consider as this required new, relevant and significant element.
“We disagreed with the interpretation of the stewards that this element wouldn’t be significant, relevant and new – we thought that was actually the case.
“But we remain thankful to the stewards for having considered the matter very rapidly, quickly, and we keep our as usual, our constructive, supportive approach.”

Northern Ireland Open 2024 LIVE RESULTS: Final ON NOW as Wilson leads Trump heading into evening session – updates
Juddering back into it
Judd Trump missed out on the first century of the match in the final frame of the afternoon.
But he achieved something far more important to him.
His break of 83 steered him to his first frame of the match, leaving Kyren Wilson 7-1 up ahead of tonight’s session.
It would be an almighty shock if Trump denied his fellow English ace the two frames he needs to win the Northern Ireland Open.
But if you are going to back anyone for such an epic comeback, then the world No1 would be your man.
Trump 1-7 Wilson
The World No 1 finally grafted to his first frame triumph.
But reigning Crucible king Kyren Wilson – ranked one place below him – is still just two frames from a huge win.
Trump 0-7 Wilson (29-7)
The English needs to get on the scoreboard. He doesn’t want to be whitewashed in this final.
