On fishing tackle brand Korda’s YouTube channel, Foden told of the thrill he got when he landed a catch.

He added: “This is me when I retire. A vlog for fishing.

“When I was around five, my old man would always take me and I have loved it ever since.

“I was just catching whatever really, the smaller fish, then the more times I did it I got into catching the bigger fish, the carp.

“I go to my local places and catch whatever. It’s the buzz — whatever fishing I am doing I enjoy.”

Foden told host Neil Spooner: “At the Euros training camp we had lakes on the golf course.

“I would get the rod out and catch a few carp.”

During the YouTube video, Foden caught a 28lb carp — short of his 39lb record.

De Vries critical of “domestic-specific” Super Formula penalty

Published

on

Nyck de Vries believes the penalty that cost him his first Super Formula points finish at Fuji is a result of a “domestic-specific” interpretation of the rules governing contact.

In his third and final stand-in appearance of the season for Team Impul, ex-Formula 1 racer de Vries finished eighth on the road, making up nine places from his grid position.

However, a five-second time penalty awarded for making contact with Kenta Yamashita exiting Turn 1 as they battled over ninth place on lap 32 of 41 meant that de Vries dropped down to 11th in the final results.

That matched his result from Saturday’s opening race, when he fell two tenths of a second shy of overhauling Kondo Racing’s Yamashita for the final point in 10th.

While satisfied with his performance, de Vries pointed out the difference between his version of events in his battle with Yamashita and those of the stewards, and feels the move would have been deemed legal in categories outside of Japan.

“I would call the [penalty] decision very domestic-specific, made by people who are watching 100 metres away from the corner, which is different from my view,” said de Vries.

“If you watch the footage, it’s clear that at the apex I am almost half a car length in front of [Yamashita]. I am on the normal line, so I am accelerating at the optimum point, so I have no chance to back out because I need to use all the track.

“He accelerates to try and recover the missed ground, but he is going for a gap that isn’t there. I am at maximum lock, and he is coming from the outside and hits me.

“I just feel bad for the team because they’ve had a tough season and they deserve it.”

De Vries added that hopes Super Formula will adopt a more international approach to the rules that govern wheel-to-wheel combat in future.

“People have asked me what I think about Super Formula and how it can become even more relevant to Formula 2 and Formula 1, and I praise the series, because the cars are great and the racing is great,” he said.

“But this kind of rule that has nothing to do with international racing doesn’t make sense to me.”

De Vries’ recovery into the points was all the more remarkable as he was caught up in a second-lap incident involving Iori Kimura and Atsushi Miyake at Turn 10.

That forced the Dutch driver into the pits to replace his front wing, although the resulting safety car meant he was able to restart at the tail of the field.

A further safety car period was called when Yuji Kunimoto tapped Kazuya Oshima into a spin at Turn 1 then allowed de Vries to pit under caution and make up further places.

“Our pace was very good in that first stint,” reflected de Vries. “[After the contact] we were overtaking a car almost every lap, so we were making ground anyway, and then the second safety car played into our hands.

“Actually on the first lap, I was already ahead of [Ayumu] Iwasa. Most of the ground I lost with the front wing change, I already made up before the second pitstop, because I came out behind Kamui [Kobayashi] and Iwasa was just ahead of him.”

Toyota junior Hibiki Taira will take over the #19 Impul car, which was driven earlier in the year by Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire and Lexus IMSA regular Ben Barnicoat, for next month’s season finale at Suzuka.

Taira took the car’s only points finish of the year so far on Super Formula’s previous visit to Fuji in July, when he finished ninth.

Conor McGregor names next opponent and exact date for comeback fight but fans already fear 'banger' won't happen

CONOR MCGREGOR has revealed when and who will face in his much-anticipated comeback fight.

The 36-year-old has not been in the octagon since losing to Dustin Poirier in 2021.

McGregor’s long-awaited return was set for June against Michael Chandler – only for him to pull out due to a broken toe.

In his three years out of action, the Irishman has expanded his business empire and he owns a stake in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.

On his way out their event in Spain last night, he was quizzed by reporter Donagh Corby on when he will make his UFC comeback.

McGregor replied: “February 1, Saudi Arabia. Dan Hooker.”

Hooker was spotted in the ring last night enjoying a friendly chat with McGregor.

He was seen holding a can of The Notorious’ Forged Irish Stout and the pair posed for a photo.

Hooker is currently ranked fifth in the UFC‘s lightweight rankings.

The New Zealander has won 24 of his 36 matches, with his last outing seeing him beat Mateusz Gamrot via a split decision in August.

Hooker has lost to Poirier, Chandler and world champion Islam Makhachev in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Fans are split over whether the fight will actually happen, with one saying: “This is great for both of them and the fans.”

Another added: “That would be a banger.”

But others were sceptical, commenting: “Won’t believe it until it actually happens. Would be fun to watch, though.”

More reacted: “Bro just walks and says the first word that comes to his mind.”

On his potential comeback, McGregor said last month: “It will be 2025. We will see. My opponent that I had scheduled… it is what it is. I take it on board and rock on.

“My job is to go to the gym and be in shape. Whenever it is and wherever it is. I will be 100 per cent ready. I must get two fights in 2025. It is the promised land.

“Who knows (who the next opponent will be). It does not matter. Whoever, let’s see. I like it to be Chandler. I wish him well and see where it goes.”

With more sides to his personality than an Octagon, Conor McGregor’s rise has been an enthralling watch.

2024 college football rankings: Oregon takes top spot after win over Ohio State

2024 college football rankings: Oregon takes top spot after win over Ohio State

College football fans across the country had Oct. 12 circled on the calendar as a day filled with must-see games. It lived up to the hype, as the day featured outstanding games at the top of the sport’s hierarchy and, for me, a new No. 1-ranked team.

The Ohio StateOregon game featured six lead changes throughout, while four more games featuring top 25 teams needed overtime to decide a winner.

And while there are still nine undefeated teams left in the sport at the halfway mark of the season, no one team feels unbeatable and no one team has separated itself with a resounding performance that has indicated success will be found in November, let alone the second half of October.

All that’s certain is the uncertainty that makes this sport the best in the world, and the second college football axiom holds true: Anything that can happen will happen. Just add water — or 2024 Vanderbilt.

With that, here is a look at my top 25 rankings following Week 7 of the college football season:

1. Oregon (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated Ohio State, 32-31

The Ducks outlasted the Buckeyes at Autzen Stadium, marking their first win against a top-five opponent as a Big Ten member. The Ducks have won 35 of their last 36 games at Autzen and put up 32 points on a defense that had surrendered just 6.8 points per game prior to their first loss of the season.

2. Texas (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated Oklahoma, 34-3

Oklahoma briefly looked like it might be poised for a fight with an early takeaway, but the Longhorns began overwhelming the Sooners with 21 points in the second quarter and 34 unanswered by game’s end. Quinn Ewers returned from injury, throwing for 199 yards and a touchdown, while adding another score on the ground.

3. Ohio State (5-1)

Week 6 result: Lost to Oregon, 32-31

The Buckeyes failed to do what most have when they visit Eugene … win. But Ohio State still looks like one of the best four teams in the sport and like a team that could still challenge for the Big Ten title.

4. Penn State (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated USC, 33-30

The Nittany Lions fought back from a 14-point deficit to get their first road victory since August 31st and supplant themselves as one of just three unbeaten teams left in the Big Ten.

Tight end Tyler Warren enjoyed what might be a Mackey Award-winning performance with 17 catches for 224 yards with a touchdown in the win.

5. Georgia (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Mississippi State, 41-31

The Dawgs didn’t cover the spread, which was 33.5 points, but they got the win to set up for a monster top-five showdown in the SEC next week. They’ll travel to Austin, Texas, to play the undefeated Longhorns. Carson Beck threw for 459 yards in the win, but the Dawgs gave up 306 passing yards to Michael Van Buren Jr., which is worrisome as they prepare to play against a top-10 Texas offense.

6. Miami (Fla.) (6-0)

Week 6 result: Idle

7. Clemson (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Wake Forest, 49-14

Since scoring just three points against Georgia back in Week 1, Clemson has put up 40 or more in four of its five wins, and at least 29 points in all five. The Tigers have looked like the best team in the ACC since Week 2.

8. Iowa State (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated West Virginia, 28-16

Matt Campbell’s team just keeps winning. Rocco Becht completed 18 of 26 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown, while Carson Hansen carried it 20 times for 96 yards and three scores.

9. BYU (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated Arizona, 41-19

The Cougars forced four turnovers against the Wildcats to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2020. With the victory, BYU stays atop the Big 12 standings in a tight race for first place. Cougars QB Jake Retzlaff threw for 218 yards with two touchdowns in the win.

Arizona Wildcats vs. No. 14 BYU Cougars Highlights

10. LSU (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Ole Miss, 29-26 (OT)

Garrett Nussmeier found Kyren Lacy for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in overtime to give the Bayou Bengals a walk-off win. Nussmeier finished with 337 passing yards, three TDs and two INTs in what could be a season-defining victory for the Tigers, who look to separate in a loaded SEC.

11. Tennessee (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Florida, 23-17

For the third straight game, the Tennessee passing attack has looked anemic. However, against a depleted and humbled Florida team, the Vols did enough to earn their second win in SEC play with a massive game against Alabama on tap next week.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava has not passed for more than 200 yards since the Vols’ Week 2 win against N.C. State.

12. Alabama (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated South Carolina, 27-25

Alabama survived this game thanks to a missed field goal and a mismanaged final possession by the Gamecocks. For two and a half games, the Tide have not looked good — proving it with a loss to Vanderbilt — and now stumbling against a South Carolina team that will struggle to win eight games this season. One bright spot is that the Alabama defense did record four takeaways and four sacks against the Gamecocks.

13. Notre Dame (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Stanford, 49-7

The Fighting Irish scored 35 points in the second and third quarters and got their best performance to date out of QB Riley Leonard, who completed 16 of 22 passes for 229 yards and four total touchdowns.

14. Texas A&M (5-1)

Week 6 result: Idle

15. Missouri (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated UMass, 45-3

Welcome back, Mizzou. Wideout Luther Burden accounted for 127 total yards, including a 61-yard rushing touchdown, on just seven touches against the Minutemen.

16. Boise State (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Hawaii, 28-7

It’s the Ashton Jeanty show in Boise, and it was on display again Saturday. The do-it-all back rushed for 217 yards and a touchdown, while also adding another score through the air in the Broncos’ win over Hawaii.

17. Kansas State (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Colorado, 31-28

The Wildcats escaped Boulder with a win, but it wasn’t easy. Chris Klieman’s team relied on the run game and halfback DJ Giddens, who carried the rock 25 times for 182 yards in the win.

18. Illinois (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Purdue, 50-49

Luke Altmyer threw for 379 yards with three touchdowns in what became an instant classic in the Big Ten. A game that featured more than 1,000 yards of offense, including more than 600 through the air, came down to a two-point conversion attempt the Illini stopped to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive.

Purdue Boilermakers vs. No. 23 Illinois Fighting Illini Highlights

19. Indiana (6-0)

Week 6 result: Idle

20. Pitt (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated Cal, 17-15

With the victory, Pitt improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1982 and has established itself as a legitimate challenger in the ACC title race. And the Panthers did it without much in the way of offensive yardage. They totaled just 277 yards — nearly 250 beneath their average in the first five games of the season.

21. Ole Miss (5-2)

Week 6 result: Lost to LSU, 29-26 (OT)

Lane Kiffin’s team put up 464 yards of offense, but the Rebels’ defense couldn’t slow down LSU’s offense when it mattered most. Jaxson Dart passed for 284 yards and a score, but he only completed 24 of 42 passes in the game, likely putting an end to his Heisman chances, as well as the Rebels’ SEC title chances.

22. Arizona State (5-1)

Week 6 result: Defeated Utah, 27-19

When you’ve gotta get hard yards, hand the ball to Cam Skattebo. That’s what the Sun Devils did Friday night, as the senior running back rumbled for 158 yards and two touchdowns in an upset win over Utah. With the win, the Sun Devils hit the over on their preseason win total (4.5).

“For those of you who won,” ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said, “put the money back in the NIL collective.”

23. SMU (5-1)

Week 6 result: Idle

24. Army (6-0)

Week 6 result: Defeated UAB, 44-10

Quarterback Bryson Daily was responsible for five total touchdowns in a rout that started with a 20-point first quarter for the Black Knights. The win makes Army 6-0 for the first time in 28 years and extends the team’s winning streak to 10 games, dating back to last season.

25. Navy (5-0)

Week 6 result: Idle

Pakistan v England: Ben Stokes set to be fit, same Multan pitch in line to be used

Pakistan v England: Ben Stokes set to be fit, same Multan pitch in line to be used

Sanctions would only be administered retrospectively if a pitch or outfield subsequently are deemed to have played in an unsatisfactory or unfit manner.

The theory for playing on the same surface is that a fresh pitch would simply produce a repeat of last week. By playing on the old pitch, which is cracked and started to show signs of uneven bounce towards the back end of the first Test, Pakistan may feel their bowlers have a better chance against England’s powerful batting.

“Going off the last game, we did see it go up and down, mainly down, towards the back end,” said Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.

“The cracks started opening up. I’m no groundsman, but I don’t think you can make cracks go back together that easily, certainly in three days. You’d expect it to do something off the cracks and with it being dry and hot again, you’d expect the spinners to play more of a part.”

If the same pitch is employed – and there is still the chance one of the strips either side is settled on – it may also help Stokes’ reintroduction into the England side.

The 33-year-old has missed four consecutive Tests and the main concern over his return would be the amount of overs he is able to bowl.

On a used pitch, England spinners Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir and part-timer Joe Root can be expected to do the bulk of the bowling, taking the load off Stokes and England’s other seamers.

“When we’re talking about Ben’s workloads and his bowling, it might play into our hands with that, with the spinners potentially playing more of a part,” said Anderson.

“He looks great. He has worked really hard on his fitness and looking as strong as I’ve ever seen him. He’s had a good bowl in the nets and looks good to go.”

It seems most likely Stokes would come into the England side for Chris Woakes. England may also check on the condition of pacemen Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse following their workload in the heat of the first Test, with Matthew Potts on stand-by.

Stokes and Potts were two of only five England players that took part in optional training on Sunday, alongside Bashir, Rehan Ahmed and Jordan Cox.

Artur Beterbiev is told ‘you have to knock him out’ by corner just minutes before beating Bivol on POINTS

Artur Beterbiev is told 'you have to knock him out' by corner just minutes before beating Bivol on POINTS

ARTUR BETERBIEV was told “you have to knock him out” by his own corner – just minutes before beating Dmitry Bivol on points.

Beterbiev slugged it out with his fellow Russian in Riyadh on Saturday night in their light-heavyweight world title showdown.

Beterbiev’s own team appeared to tell their man he needed to get a knockout

It looked as though Bivol was on his way to securing the belts with most viewers having him far enough ahead on their own mental scorecards.

And even Beterbiev’s team appeared to agree that their man was behind in the latter stages.

So much so that it is understood they were telling the 39-year-old veteran that he had to go for broke to stop Bivol inside the 12 rounds in order to maintain his unbeaten record and become undisputed champ.

However, Beterbiev could not secure the knockout as the final bell sounded and it came down to the judges’ scorecards.

And eyebrows were raised when it was controversially given to Beterbiev on a majority decision.

One judge had it 114-114 but the others went with 115-113 and 116-112 to Beterbiev.

Bivol’s gutted promotor Eddie Hearn let rip at the result – and cited the victor’s camp’s comments in the corner as evidence.

Hearn said: “In one of the biggest fights of our generation and in the most important fight in Dmitry Bivol‘s life you give him FOUR rounds?

“It’s absolutely disgusting.

“You heard in the tenth round ‘you have to knock him out to win this fight’.

Fabio Wardley destroys Frazer Clarke as he mangles opponents jaw in astonishing first round KO

“They knew Artur Beterbiev lost this fight. I’m absolutely baffled and disgusted by a scorecard of 116-112.

“I don’t want to disrespect Artur Beterbiev but Dmitry Bivol should be the undisputed champion tonight and that judge should never work again.

“Four rounds in a fight of that magnitude is disgusting.”

Fans watching the fight on TV were also furious at the outcome.

One said: “Beterbiev’s corner last two rounds, ‘You have to knock him out,’ implying they know they are going to lose. And then there goes that judge with his 116-112 scorecard. It’s just indefensible.”

Another wrote: “In the ninth and tenth rounds, Arthur’s corner kept telling him ‘you have to knock him out’ – that basically means you are losing and you have to put his a** to sleep.”

A third added: “There’s no bigger Beterbiev fan than me and that was one of the worst robberies I’ve ever seen in boxing. That’s insane.”

A fourth commented: “Can’t call it a robbery when it’s close, but Bivol deserved to win. He killed the threat of Beterbiev, and schooled him in some moments. There’s a reason Beterbievs’ corner told him ‘you have to knock him out’ in the last rounds…”

And a final user fumed: “F*** BOXING. Bivol has just produced one of the best 12-round performances I’ve ever seen and won that fight easily it’s an absolute robbery. 116-112 to Beterbiev is the worst card of all time.”

Today I am lucky

Artur Beterbiev

Even Beterbiev admitted he was “lucky” to win the fight.

But he did respond to the accusations of his corner’s comments about needing a knockout.

The champ insisted that is just their standard practice for the man who had won all 20 of his previous professional bouts by knockout.

Beterbiev said: “They always say that.

“I was more focused but not more aggressive. It’s my experience and I am happy. I am a very simple boxer.

“I feel not bad. I did not good today.

“I wanted to box with more quality. I’ll be better one day. It was a little bit uncomfortable.

“Of course, it was a tough fight because Dmitry is a tough champion and he has tough skills, better than me.

“During the fight, we always try to change something. I didn’t deliver more punches, I don’t know. Today I am lucky too.”
