Arsenal Women: Gunners forced to move Women’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich

Arsenal Women: Gunners forced to move Women's Champions League tie against Bayern Munich

The Spurs game against United will be televised on Thursday, 19 December.

Arsenal are now exploring alternatives with European governing body Uefa for the Bayern tie. This includes moving the fixture to Meadow Park in Borehamwood, where they play the majority of their Women’s Super League matches.

However, Meadow Park’s facilities do not currently meet Uefa regulations so there would need to be some flexibility.

It is unclear where the ground fails to meet the regulations but Uefa’s rules state requirements on a range of things, including pitch heating and covers, grass height, floodlights, goalpost structures, pitch surrounding areas, artificial pitches and frequency of pitch watering.

There is no video assistant referee (VAR) or goalline technology requirements in the group stages of the Women’s Champions League.

It is an uncomfortable situation for Arsenal, given they have made a point of making Emirates Stadium the main home for their women’s team.

BBC Sport has contacted Uefa for a response.

Champions League LIVE SCORES: Aston Villa LOSING, Harry Kane’s Bayern in action later, PSG vs Atletico – latest updates

Champions League LIVE SCORES: Aston Villa LOSING, Harry Kane's Bayern in action later, PSG vs Atletico - latest updates

Penalty incident explained

Emi Martinez stood over a goal kick, which he passed out to Tyrone Mings.

The centre-half then picked up the ball, as if to place back down to take the goal kick himself.

The referee, however, deemed Martinez to have taken the goal kick already, therefore deeming that Mings handballed!

Following a quick VAR check the call was confirmed, much to Unai Emery’s bewilderment.

But what a bizarre penalty incident…

PENALTY! Disaster for Mings!

This is a controversial one… Club Brugge have a penalty!

Second halves underway!

Proceedings in Belgium and Germany have recommenced!

Who will break the deadlock in Bruges?

And can Young Boys find a way back against Shakhtar?

From Graeme Bryce at Jan Breydel Stadium

Villa made it to half-time intact but, despite enjoying more than 60 per cent of possession, they have ridden their luck at times with Brugge rattling off five shots on target to the visitors’ one.

One player in the Brugge ranks looks a stand-out as 20-year-old Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordonez is handling Ollie Watkins well and looks comfortable on the ball coming forward.

I suspect we might just see him in the Prem one day.

Meanwhile it’s time for Unai Emery to work his magic during a crucial half-time team-talk.

Former England star unimpressed

Darren Anderton clearly didn’t enjoy that first half…

Moselle Open: Cameron Norrie beats Luca van Assche to reach quarter-finals

Britain’s Cameron Norrie beat Luca van Assche at the Moselle Open to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final since April.

Norrie, who spent almost three months out with a forearm injury, beat the Frenchman 6-3 3-6 6-1.

It is the first time the 29-year-old has registered back-to-back wins on the main ATP Tour since Wimbledon in July.

World number 57 Norrie has not won an ATP title this season, having struggled for rhythm before the injury that led to him pulling out of the Olympics and the US Open.

His last quarter-final showing was on the Barcelona Open clay courts, where he lost to Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

“I’m just trying to enjoy the last week of the year for me competing,” Norrie told Sky Sports.

“I’m here another day, which is great, but I’ll have to improve my level to keep going further in the tournament.”

He will face Belgium’s Zizou Bergs for a place in the semi-finals.

Why UFC’s Erin Blanchfield likes Manon Fiorot vs. Valentina Shevchenko

Why UFC’s Erin Blanchfield likes Manon Fiorot vs. Valentina Shevchenko

Erin Blanchfield likes Manon Fiorot’s chances against UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Fiorot (12-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) is expected to be Shevchenko’s next title challenger after going unbeaten in the octagon, including a win over Blanchfield in the UFC on ESPN 54 main event in March.

Having felt Fiorot’s strength and failing to take her down in their fight, Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) expects the French fighter’s size to pose problems for Shevchenko (24-4-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC).

“I think Manon could do very well,” Blanchfield told MMA Junkie. “I could even see her beating Valentina. I could see Valentina winning, but I think Manon can use her size. I think she’s a very big flyweight, and she knows how to use her range and like her length. I think Valentina is more like dynamic and has more skills.

“So, I’m curious how Valentina is going to deal with her size because I know in the past, let’s say with like Taila (Santos), I remember her complaining about how big Taila is, and I feel like Manon’s significantly bigger. So yeah, I think it’s a good matchup, and I’m curious to see how it goes.”

Since losing to Fiorot, Blanchfield rebounded with a five-round co-main event win over Rose Namajunas this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 246.

“I feel like I was able to utilize my striking better. That’s something obviously I had a lot of focus on after my last fight,” Blanchfield said of her win over Namajunas. “I feel like I was able to show a little bit of improvement there. Obviously there’s room for more, but it’s only been a couple of months.

“So, I feel like I was able to definitely show that to myself and win those championship rounds, too. I feel like that was a big thing. Even though losing those first two rounds, I was able to come back and sweep the scorecards on the rest of the rounds.”

Brazil GP marshals “partying” after rescuing Haas driver before black flag

Published

on

Nico Hulkenberg has revealed how the marshals at Turn 1 for the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix were “partying” after illegally helping the Haas driver rejoin the race after an off.

The German spun out in difficult conditions at Interlagos and although he failed to reach the barriers at the first corner, he became beached on a crest in the run-off area, with his rear wheels in the air.

This led to the use of the virtual safety car – one which brought race-defining pit stops – but instead of Hulkenberg retiring, he was pushed off the ledge and continued.

But the use of outside assistance contravened F1 regulations and saw Hulkenberg disqualified – the first driver shown the black flag since the Canadian Grand Prix in 2007.

Recapping his race, Hulkenberg said: “I think it was going OK on the inters actually; I was in a train with Pierre [Gasly] and Fernando [Alonso] for a long time, before we pitted. So I think we were going OK – it wasn’t dreadful, but it wasn’t amazing either.

“Just after the pit stop, our race somehow… obviously it finished pretty quickly and it all went south from there.”

On the incident that ultimately saw him disqualified, Hulkenberg explained: “They [the marshals] came out, they pushed me off and they were really happy with themselves.

“They were partying and pushing me on and saying, ‘come on, go, let’s go, this race isn’t finished’. In that moment, you don’t really think, you don’t care to be honest as well.

“You just continue and you deal with the consequences later.”

The race would further hinge on a red flag just laps after Hulkenberg had triggered the virtual safety car as a deluge of rain and Franco Colapinto’s crash under safety car conditions left race control with no alternative.

Having made it to the pits under the red flags before being told of his disqualification, Hulkenberg dealt with the worst of the weather and insisted: “Definitely amongst the toughest conditions that I’ve raced in.

“Incredibly low grip, a very, very narrow window, very hard to make no mistakes. It was very tough.”
