NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison dies at age 86

NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Allison, who ranks fourth all-time with 85 NASCAR Cup Series victories, died Saturday at age 86.

An original member of “The Alabama Gang,” Allison won the 1983 Cup title and also captured the Daytona 500 three times, including in 1988 as part of a 1-2 finish with his son, Davey. Later that year, injuries suffered in a crash at Pocono ended Bobby Allison’s racing career, which started in 1961 and included 718 Cup starts.

“Bobby was the ultimate fan’s driver,” the Allison family said in a statement. “He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his fans and would stop to sign autographs and have conversations with them everywhere he went.”

Allison drove for more than a dozen race teams throughout his career including wins for Holman-Moody, Roger Penske and Bud Moore while piling up wins and earning a Cup title for DiGard Racing. He couldn’t ignore that fact in his Hall of Fame induction speech — he was part of the 2011 class, the second five-member class for the facility opened in 2010 – and even cracked a joke about it.

“Just to try to put that into perspective a little bit — that was in nine different brands the cars for 14 different race teams,” Allison said. “The way I look at it now, I did drive pretty good most of the time. But, boy, I couldn’t keep a job.”

While he had so many wins, he admittedly couldn’t remember all of them because of the head injury suffered in the crash at Pocono.

“Had great times,” Allison said during that Hall of Fame speech. “As the career wound down, I got some really good wins. They tell me I won Daytona in ’88. …  Went through a lot of things. Got involved with a lot of people along the way.

“I won some races. Struggled, got better, did poorly, got better and everything. But the bottom line, it was just an incredible career.”

Having earned Most Popular Driver five times for his competitive spirit, it was that determination that played a role in one of the sport’s most infamous moments. On the final lap of the 1979 Daytona 500, his brother Donnie Allison was involved in a wreck with Cale Yarborough. Bobby went over to help his brother and punches were thrown on a fight seen across the country as part of the first live flag-to-flag telecast of the race.

Bobby Allison’s line on the fight was always a form of Yarborough “beating on my fists with his nose.”

For decades, Allison was credited with 84 wins. But a couple of weeks ago, NASCAR recognized his Cup victory in 1971 at Bowman-Gray Stadium. It was a race that included both Cup cars and the smaller Grand American cars, and Allison opted to run a Grand American car in that race and won. For more than 50 years, that Cup race was listed as not having an official winner because a Cup car wasn’t the first to cross the finish line.

“Bobby Allison personified the term ‘racer,’” NASCAR Chairman Jim France said in a statement. “Though he is best known as one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history, his impact on the sport extends far beyond the record books.

“As a driver, he won races and championships across several NASCAR divisions. But as the leader of the famous “Alabama Gang,” Bobby connected with fans in a profound manner. In the most significant ways, he gave his all to our sport.”

Allison’s life was not void of tragedy as both of his sons died within a year of each other. Clifford Allison died in August 1992 from injuries suffered in a crash during practice at Michigan International Speedway. Davey Allison was killed in a helicopter crash at Talladega Superspeedway in April 1993.

“The world I hope never is that cruel to any other family again,” Allison said. “But it happened. We survived it. People helped us and supported us. I just really appreciate that.”

Lakers' Anthony Davis says his eye is fine, declines to wear goggles

Anthony Davis says he has recovered from being poked in the left eye by Toronto’s Jakob Poeltl, and his latest eye injury still hasn’t persuaded him to wear protective goggles.

The Los Angeles Lakers ‘ star big man said Tuesday that he will play Wednesday night against Memphis. Davis brushed off the potential impact of the injury, even though his left eye was noticeably discolored after practice at the Lakers’ training complex.

“I’ll go about my day and do what I need to do,” Davis said. “Next up is getting more sleep.”

Davis said he has “no idea” if his latest injury is another corneal abrasion. He had that injury last March after getting poked in a game against Golden State but didn’t miss any time.

“A couple of scratches in my eye,” Davis said. “As far as the medical term and all that, I’m not 100% sure, but I’m cleared to play.”

Each time Davis gets poked in the face by opponents, he is asked whether he will consider wearing goggles or protective glasses like similarly dominant big men Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Amare Stoudemire. Before the usual question was even completed Tuesday, Davis replied: “No.”

“I don’t want to, and the doctor said I didn’t have to,” Davis said. “Now if it gets to a point where doctor orders are to (wear goggles) … .”

Davis said he wore goggles for about three years when he was young. He tried wearing goggles again briefly during the Lakers’ championship run in the Florida pandemic bubble in 2020 but quickly gave up.

Davis got hurt midway through the third quarter against Toronto on Sunday night while making a sensational one-handed block of a dunk attempt by Poeltl, who accidentally clocked Davis in the face with his off hand. Davis didn’t return to the game, but the Lakers still surged to a 123-103 victory over the Raptors.

Davis is off to an outstanding start to the regular season, sparking early MVP talk for the 31-year-old. He is second in the NBA with 31.2 points per game, along with 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 blocks for the Lakers (6-4).

David Coote: FA launches investigation into video of comments about Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool

David Coote: FA launches investigation into video of comments about Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool

The Football Association has launched its own investigation into the video that appears to show Premier League referee David Coote using foul language to describe former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Coote has already been suspended by refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) pending a full investigation.

BBC Sport has also been told the 42-year-old has been withdrawn from an international commitment this week.

However, the nature of Coote’s alleged comments are also attracting the attention of the FA.

One of the comments cites Klopp’s German nationality and FA rules state nationality is one of the references that can lead to an aggravated breach of its rules.

“We are aware of the matter, and we are investigating it,” said the FA in a statement.

The video allegedly showing Coote making derogatory comments about Klopp was circulated on social media.

It has not been verified by the BBC and it is unclear when it was filmed.

A source told the BBC that PGMOL’s inquiry is treating the video as genuine.

Coote is one of the Premier League’s most-experienced officials and has been refereeing matches in the top flight since 2018.

The video being shared appears to refer to a Premier League match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished 1-1.

Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to give fouls for challenges made on Liverpool’s players.

In the video the man alleged to be Coote says Klopp had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown”. He calls Klopp arrogant and also swears several times when referring to him.

The video shows him with another man and lasts for just over a minute. The circumstances of how the video emerged are unclear.

PGMOL says it will not be making further comment on the case until its investigation is completed.
