PFL goes ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ for Ngannou vs. Fereira trailer

PFL goes ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ for Ngannou vs. Fereira trailer

Make no mistake: Heavyweight title fights don’t get much bigger than Francis Ngannou vs. Renan Fereira – literally and figuratively.

In the literal sense, Ngannou (at 6-foot-4) and Ferreira (at 6-8) are two behemoths who will easily clear a combined 500 pounds when they step into the cage for their PFL Super Fights pay-per-view headliner Oct. 19 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In the figurative sense, it’s one of the most anticipated fights of the year as Ngannou (17-3), the lineal heavyweight champion, makes his long-awaited return to mixed martial arts after nearly three years away from the sport. Although Ngannou had two big-money boxing bouts against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, he hasn’t competed in MMA since UFC 270 in January 2022. Ready to welcome him is Ferreira (13-3), who went on a tear in 2023 to claim the PFL season heavyweight title before completely dismantling Bellator champ Ryan Bader this past February.

With so much at stake in this “Battle of the Giants,” the PFL went all out with an epic Godzilla-like trailer released Tuesday, which you can watch in the video above.

Topuria ‘very smart’ for approach in Holloway face-to-face

Ilia Topuria, Max Holloway get heated in pre-fight interview

Daniel Cormier thinks Ilia Topuria is starting to get under Max Holloway’s skin ahead of UFC 308.

Featherweight champion Topuria (15-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) defends his title against Holloway (26-7 MMA, 22-7 UFC) in the Oct. 26 main event at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).

In a pre-fight interview moderated by Brendan Fitzgerald, Topuria and Holloway traded barbs, with Topuria vowing to be the first to knock out Holloway. Cormier saw some agitation from Holloway during those exchanges.

“Here’s for me why this worked: You got to see Max Holloway a little bit mad,” Cormier said on “Good Guy/Bad Guy” with Chael Sonnen. “It felt like Ilia Topuria has now gotten to the point where Max doesn’t like him. He respected Max in his career path and the things that he did. I don’t know that now, he respects him in that way, and I think it’s very smart of Topuria not to hold that respect and have that for Max Holloway because the last guy that Max Holloway fought in Justin Gaethje, who liked Max – he had no bad feelings toward Max.

“He said he couldn’t get himself ready because Max is a great guy. Everybody loves Max. Max Holloway put him out with one of the most devastating knockouts we have seen in a really long time. Ilia Topuria’s not having any of that. Ilia Topuria’s saying, ‘I’m going to knock you out. I’m going to put you into retirement.’ He said he put Volk into retirement already. This dude Ilia is so confident, but why wouldn’t he be? He is the world champion. … If you can fight the way that this man fights, then you can carry yourself in that way.”

Topuria ran through Bryce Mitchell and Josh Emmett before dethroning Alexander Volkanovski by second-round knockout to become featherweight champion at UFC 298. Meanwhile, Holloway re-entered the title picture after an incredible knockout of Justin Gaethje to claim the BMF title at UFC 300.

Women’s Championship: Sunderland v Newcastle to break attendance record

Women's Championship: Sunderland v Newcastle to break attendance record

Sunderland have marketed this game as ‘Race to 20K’ in terms of trying to reach an attendance of more than 20,000.

But the figure is set to smash the previous best of 11,137 for a match at this level between Sheffield United and London City in November 2022.

This is the first of four matches that the Lasses will play at the Stadium of Light this season.

Birmingham, Durham and Sheffield United will all travel up to the 48,707-capacity stadium in 2025, while other home matches will be held at their regular Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.

Sunderland manager Mel Reay hopes any first-time attendees on Sunday can be hooked enough to become regular fans in the near future.

“It’s a bit different to Eppleton with fans cheering us on in the stands, but that’s what we want,” she told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“We fully understand that, as the game grows and that if there’s more than 1,800, we can’t play at Eppleton.

“So if we can get those numbers week-in, week-out who want to attend games, the Stadium of Light will be a regular occurrence.”

UFC Vegas 98 weigh-in results: 3 fighters over the limit

UFC Vegas 98 weigh-in results: 3 fighters over the limit

Dan Argueta, Josh Fremd, and Jared Gooden have some explaining to do.

The three fighters competing at UFC Vegas 98 all failed to make weight at Friday morning’s official weigh-ins, with Argueta (138.5) missing by 2.5 pounds, Fremd (186) by 3 pounds, and Gooden (172.5) by 1.5 pounds. Their respective opponents Cody Haddon, Abdul Razak Alhassan, and Chidi Njokuani all successfully made weight.

It is not yet known which of the bouts, if any, will proceed as catchweights and, if so, what percentage of the offending fighters’ purses will be forfeited as penalty.

The misses are a particularly bad look for Fremd and Gooden, both of whom have been tripped up by the scale in the past.

For the second time in his UFC career, Fremd weighed in three pounds over the limit. He also came in at 189 pounds for a middleweight bout against Jamie Pickett at UFC Vegas 78 in August 2013, later going on to defeat Pickett by unanimous decision.

Gooden has now missed weight three times as a UFC fighter. Most recently, he came in six pounds over the limit for a fight with Carlston Harris in March 2023, though on that occasion he had accepted the bout on less than a week’s notice. He is 0-2 after failing to make weight.

In more positive news, flyweight headliners Brandon Royval and Tatsuro Taira successfully weighed in for Saturday’s main event, with both registering at 125.5 pounds. Royval is currently tied for the No. 2 spot in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings, with the undefeated Taira at No. 8. Whoever leaves UFC Vegas 98 with a win might also put themselves in pole position for a shot at flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja.

VAR mistakes: Missed penalty award for Rangers only error last week

VAR mistakes: Missed penalty award for Rangers only error last week

The panel, however, agreed with VAR’s decision to upgrade Ianis Hagi’s yellow card to a red for the Rangers midfielder’s challenge on opposition forward Adama Sidibeh in the same match – and suggested that the onfield officials ought to have identified the seriousness of the challenge.

Meanwhile, the panel decided that two decisions during Celtic’s 2-1 win over Ross County had been overturned correctly following VAR intervention.

No penalty kick was initially awarded when the ball struck Liam Scales, but the panel agreed that the Celtic centre-half’s arm was high and outstretched, making his body unnaturally bigger.

When Ronan Hale’s spot-kick was saved by Kasper Schmeichel, there was no signal from the assistant referee for the Celtic goalkeeper being off his line.

However, the panel supported the VAR’s decision to intervene and award a retake, from which the striker scored.
