NFL: Patrick Mahomes helps Kansas City Chiefs maintain unbeaten start

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shook off a late injury scare as his side won 30-24 in overtime against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Mahomes threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception while running back Kareem Hunt claimed a two-yard game-winning touchdown to take the Chiefs, playing at home, to 8-0.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, had rolled his ankle in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week and was left limping again after escaping pressure to send a touchdown pass to Samaje Perine that pulled the Chiefs level at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter.

The 29-year-old needed help to get to the sideline, but after treatment he returned to hit DeAndre Hopkins with a five-yard touchdown pass that put the reigning Super Bowl champions 24-17 up with four minutes and 17 seconds remaining.

Tampa Bay responded when quarterback Baker Mayfield controlled the game, leading to a touchdown from Ryan Miller and when the Bucs opted not to go for a two-point conversion and the lead, the extra-point kick tied it at 24-24.

Kansas City’s final drive in regulation failed to yield anything, but they got the ball to start overtime with Mahomes guiding them to the game-winning score as the Bucs suffered a fourth defeat in their past five games.

Three-time champion Yamamoto retires from Super Formula

Published

on

Three-time Super Formula champion Naoki Yamamoto has announced his decision to retire from the series following this weekend’s season finale at Suzuka.

The Nakajima Racing driver, 36, made the announcement via a post on his Instagram page on Tuesday.

It effectively calls time on a 15-season spell in Japan’s top single-seater series for the factory Honda ace  which yielded titles in 2013, ’18 and ’20, nine race wins and 13 pole positions.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I’m extremely grateful for the chance to have competed in Japan’s top category for the last 15 years and all the support I’ve had,” Yamamoto wrote.

“I made the announcement at this time so that all the fans watching would know this weekend is the last time you will be able to see me driving a formula car. I believe this is also one of the ways I am able to pay everyone back.

“Whatever the outcome of these final races, I want to step down from Super Formula having shown my real level of performance and having given it my all with this team.”

Yamamoto made his debut in what was then known as Formula Nippon in 2010 with Nakajima before switching to Team Mugen the following season, going on to claim his first two titles with the team.

He elected to switch to Dandelion Racing for 2019 immediately following his second title, which together with his success in Super GT earned him a Formula 1 practice call-up for the Japanese Grand Prix with Toro Rosso.

After winning the 2020 title for Dandelion, Yamamoto returned to Nakajima for the 2021 season, but has struggled to recapture his previous form since then.

His last win came in the wet at Motegi in 2022, although he has enjoyed a slight upturn in form this year, sitting seventh in the standings heading into this weekend’s Suzuka double-header.

Yamamoto’s decision to step down from Super Formula follows the neck and spinal injuries he suffered in a major crash in last year’s SUGO Super GT round, and which required surgery to allow him to prolong his career.

A statement from Honda says that Yamamoto will continue to race in Super GT next season. He currently shares a Team Kunimitsu Honda Civic Type R-GT with Tadasuke Makino, with the pair sitting second in the standings with one race to go this season.

‘We can’t wait to have him back’ Spurs, Clippers send well wishes to ill Gregg Popovich

'We can't wait to have him back' Spurs, Clippers send well wishes to ill Gregg Popovich

The most incredible physical feat in the NBA is often overlooked.

It’s not Steph Curry’s ability to shoot from outer space. Or Kevin Durant’s skills at creating his own shot. Or LeBron James playing as though he’s 20 at age 39.

It’s Gregg Popovich coaching the San Antonio Spurs at age 75. He became the oldest coach in NBA history in 2020, surpassing Hubie Brown, who was 71 when he coached Memphis at the start of the 2004-05 season.

And four years later, he’s still at the helm of the team, a feat that often flies under the radar, but was highlighted on Monday when it was reported that he will be out indefinitely with an unspecified health issue.

“He is okay,” said Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson, who is the interim head coach. “He will be okay. And we can’t wait to have him back.”

When pressed on how long Popovich is predicted to be out, Johnson was tight-lipped.

“I’m not at liberty to speak on that,” he said. “I don’t know enough information to even try to put something out there like that.”

This much is for sure, the rigors of the NBA season wear on some of the fittest people in the world, with flights landing at ungodly hours and schedules that can take teams to three cities in four nights. Despite charter flights, travel is notoriously exhausting over an 82-game season, often eliciting complaints from men who still have the suffix “teen” at the end of their age.

Popovich has been the Spurs’ head coach for 29 years. Sure, LeBron James has played for 22 seasons. But Popovich led the Spurs to an NBA record-tying 22 consecutive playoff appearances.

Popovich, a five-time championship coach, had long hinted at retiring whenever Tim Duncan hung up his jersey. Duncan waived his final goodbye to Spurs fans eight years ago; Popovich is still famous for causing waves.

Popovich is best known for his genius with X’s and O’s, which has landed him in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, but he’s also outspoken about social issues, racism and politics, willing to speak up for what he believes is right regardless of whom he might alienate.

Popovich’s absence has never been more glaring than Monday, the evening before Election Day.

“He’s one guy who we follow and we listen to,” Clippers coach Ty Lue said.

Popovich would’ve undoubtedly encouraged everyone to vote Tuesday. He has been an outspoken critic of Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump, recently saying, “He’s pathetic. He’s small. He’s a whiner.” Regardless of where one falls on the political spectrum, Popovich’s silence on such an important night was notable.

While Popovich has remained as fiery as ever about issues off the court, his approach on the court has clearly softened over the years. He even joked during his Hall of Fame induction speech that if he coached Tony Parker now the way he did when he was 19, “I’d be in handcuffs.”

Popovich saw the Big Three of Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili sail off into the sunset. He watched Kawhi Leonard get traded to Toronto. Over the last six years, the Spurs haven’t been competitive, but, interestingly enough, he seemed to find a newfound joy in the work, loving developing the younger players. Relieved of the pressure of winning championships, he became lighter, quicker to laugh.

When reporters questioned why he was still doing the job, he talked about how much he loved it. Getting paid to coach a game? In his eyes, the joke wasn’t that he was still working despite having earned millions, it was that people called his gig a real job.

Of course, recently things shifted. The Spurs landed the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, securing the rights to Victor Wembanyama, the most heralded player since LeBron. Shortly after that, Popovich agreed to a five-year contract extension worth more than $80 million, marking the NBA’s richest coaching deal.

Popovich made it clear that he’s still very engaged. His latest project? A 7-foot-3 Frenchman who is widely predicted to become the next face of the NBA.

It’s remarkable when you think about it. Popovich is the longest tenured active coach in all major sports leagues in the United States. His stamina is truly legendary, considering the immense mental and physical commitment it takes to coach professionally.

But we were reminded Monday that this won’t last forever. Whether what’s ailing him is serious or not, or whether he’s out for an extended period of time or returns for the next game, this is a reminder that what Popovich has done — and is doing — is unprecedented.

And of course, the Spurs knew he’d be watching Monday. They jumped to a 40-14 first quarter lead over the Clippers, but eventually fell without their leader, 113-104.

Before the game, Chris Paul said the players haven’t talked to Popovich, wanting to give him space during this time. He noted that they miss him. He mentioned that the biggest thing Popovich preaches is how privileged they all are to do this job.

But, despite what’s going on with Popovich, Paul also chuckled, knowing his coach would be doing what he does best from afar.

“He’s going to let us know what he sees,” Paul said.

Xabi Alonso breaks silence on why he ruled himself out of Liverpool job after Jurgen Klopp quit

XABI ALONSO has broken his silence on why he ruled himself out of the Liverpool job at the end of last season.

Ex-Reds midfielder Alonso, 42, was the obvious candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp after the German confirmed he was leaving.

Alonso guided Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title last season without losing a game.

They also won the DFB Pokal and reached the Europa League final.

But Alonso then surprisingly announced he was going to stay at Leverkusen, removing any chance of him succeeding Klopp.

Now he has opened up about why that was the case when he was asked whether he ever seriously considered the job at Anfield.

To which he replied: “At that time I was focused, I had a big thing with the players and we were really focused on that.”

Arne Slot ended up replacing Klopp and will come up against Alonso on Tuesday night when Liverpool host Leverkusen in the Champions League.

In the build-up to the game, Alonso, who is also being linked with Real Madrid, was quizzed on whether he could join Liverpool in the future.

He said: “Let’s talk about the game tomorrow, it’s more interesting than my future.

“Let’s talk about the great players on both sides, that is what is in my head.

“For us it is a big challenge to come here. Liverpool at the moment is one of the best if not the best in Europe, they are showing that in a very strong Premier League and the Champions League.

“It’s a good squad, good coach. At Anfield, it’s a big challenge. We’re looking forward to it, let’s see what happens.”

Slot has made a sensational start to life as Liverpool boss, winning eight of his opening 10 Premier League games as they sit two points clear at the top of the table.

Leverkusen are struggling in fourth in the Bundesliga, seven points adrift of Bayern Munich.

But they have picked up seven points from three Champions League matches, including wins over Feyenoord and AC Milan.

NBA results: Cleveland Cavaliers beat Milwaukee Bucks to match franchise record

The Cleveland Cavaliers matched a franchise record by winning their first eight games of the season as they edged a 116-114 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Cavaliers matched a record set in 1976-77 with a win in which Darius Garland scored a game-high 39 points against a Bucks side without the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Garland sank a three-pointer with 45 seconds left and then set up Jarrett Allen for a lay-up with 12.2 seconds remaining to secure the win.

“It’s hard to get one [win] so eight is crazy,” Garland said.

Damian Lillard scored 36 points for the Bucks, who were 106-98 up with just over six minutes left, but could not prevent his side losing a sixth game in a row.

Cleveland had also beaten the Bucks 114-113 on Saturday when Donovan Mitchell scored with 0.3 seconds left.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are also unbeaten this season as they won a seventh successive game by beating the Orlando Magic 102-86.

Jalen Williams scored 23 points for the Thunder, while team-mate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 21 points.

Elsewhere, Stephen Curry returned from a three-game absence to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Washington Wizards 125-112.

Curry was back after spraining his left ankle and scored 24 points against the Wizards as the Warriors improved their record to 4-0 on the road.

The Detroit Pistons ended a seven-game losing run with a 115-103 win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jaden Ivey scored 26 points while Pistons team-mate Cade Cunningham registered a triple-double of 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Lakers’ Anthony Davis, who continued to play in the fourth quarter after appearing to be troubled by an ankle issue, led all scorers with 37 points.

Kevin Durant scored 35 points to inspire the Phoenix Suns to a 118-116 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Boston Celtics beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-93.

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim to be handed instant injury boost as £60m ace set for first-team return

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim to be handed instant injury boost as £60m ace set for first-team return

RUBEN AMORIM is set to be handed an instant injury boost when he finally takes charge at Manchester United after Mason Mount returned to first-team training.

The Portuguese boss has been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s successor at Old Trafford.

But he will not be taking the reins until after November’s international break.

It means the current Sporting Lisbon chief has plenty of time to prep for his first game against Ipswich Town as interim gaffer Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge of fixtures with PAOK and Leicester.

And Amorim is sure to be running his eye over United’s talented, yet underperforming, squad.

He certainly won’t be short on options after Ten Hag was provided with £200million-worth of new stars over the summer.

But one forgotten ace is also set to rejoin the pack, with Mount returning to full training after missing the whole of October with injury.

Mount was signed from Chelsea a year ago for £55m.

Now 25, he should be hitting his peak after leading the Blues to the Champions League and Club World Cup.

But Mount has been hit by numerous injury problems at United and so far has just one goal in 25 outings.

The England star will be desperate to relive his Stamford Bridge glory days at Old Trafford.

And he could be one of the beneficiaries of Amorim’s new 3-4-3 formation, which sees two versatile forwards sit either side of the striker.

Mount played a similar role on the right at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.

But he will first need to prove his fitness while also convincing Amorim that he is more deserving of a place in the forward line than the likes of Marcus Rashord, Bruno Fernandes or Alejandro Garnacho.

Ruben Amorim is ‘Mourinho 2.0’ who turned Sporting from ‘walking dead’ into Portuguese champs… he can revive Man Utd

WHEN Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting Lisbon in March 2020, one club official compared their situation to the “walking dead”, writes Jordan Davies.

Optimism and hope was at an all-time low.

But the Amorim-effect was almost instantaneous, guiding the Portuguese sleeping giants to their first league title for 19 years in 2020/21, losing just once and only conceding 20 goals.

Since then, Sporting have lifted another league title in 2023/24 – as well as two League Cups – and currently sit top with nine wins from nine this term.

He may be young, but Amorim already has an eye for rebuilding and revitalising fallen super powers with his infectious charisma and intense tactical philosophy that hardly ever wavers.

The “walking dead” at Manchester United must be praying for a similar sort of revival.

And they may just get it from one of the most talented young coaches on the continent – a man accustomed to breathing new life back into crumbling institutions such as Old Trafford.

Amorim has spent the last decade dreaming of one day gracing England’s Premier League, such was his admiration for an ex-United boss in Jose Mourinho growing up.

Often nicknamed ‘Mourinho 2.0’, Amorim spent a week with his coaching idol in an internship capacity at United’s Carrington training base in 2018, going on to cite him as his “reference point”.

United should not be expecting a mini-Mourinho, as Amorim said himself: “Mourinho is one of a kind. There won’t be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.”

And yet, you cannot help but compare the two.

For all the mismanagement in the Old Trafford hot seats over the years, this would be a real get – finally a slap in the face United’s Prem rivals have no answer for.
