Super League Grand Final: Wigan Warriors and Hull KR offer blueprint for success

Once Maguire left to fulfil his NRL ambitions, Wane was subsequently promoted to the top job and was to continue the legacy.

Peet enjoyed a similar trajectory, working his way through a number of roles and a spell in rugby union to succeed Adrian Lam after the 2021 season.

His even-keel nature, thoughtfulness and ability to draw on the expertise of others have allowed him to navigate Wigan to success.

And boy, what success. Two Challenge Cups, two League Leaders’ Shields, a World Club Challenge win over four-in-a-row premiers Penrith, and a Grand Final. Soon, they hope in Wigan, to become two.

Players love his manner, he believes in the collective and has sold that to his players. Never too high, never too low. But always on.

Peet trusts in youth, and has been rewarded. Brad O’Neill, Zach Eckersley and perhaps the most impressive young player in the country Junior Nsemba have all thrived under his guidance and pay tribute to his coaching.

His side has lifted trophy after trophy, enviably. But it is success built on humility and hard work.

Flooded pitch causes chaos in Argentina's draw with Venezuela as Lionel Messi rants about 'ugly' match

LIONEL MESSI ranted about the waterlogged pitch after Argentina drew with Venezuela.

Nicolas Otamendi‘s early opener was cancelled out by a goal from former Everton and West Brom striker Salomon Rondon.

After the match Messi complained his side had to ditch their gameplan because of the pitch conditions.

Rain left the ground soaked and inhibited the ball’s movement during the match.

A clip of Messi warming up showed the ball stopping dead after he hit a shot against the bar, with water preventing it from bouncing at all.

Messi believes the conditions made for an “ugly” match as it prevented passes from being made with players having to “battle” instead.

He said: “It was very difficult, it makes for very ugly matches.

“We could not complete two passes in a row. In the second half we did it on the right a little more, but it is difficult to play like that. Very little is played.

“We tied because the pitch didn’t help us do what we wanted, we had to play a different game than the one we prepared for.

“But we were prepared because we fought, won the battles, played with the error of the rival. We couldn’t risk much by playing with passes to the back.

“In the first half we made a couple passes to the back and the water would stop it, and complicate it. We did the game we could with the water.”

Kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes due to the pitch conditions before the referee judged it okay to play.

Wuhan Open: Coco Gauff to face Aryna Sabalenka in semi-final

American Coco Gauff secured her 50th WTA win of the year with a 6-0 6-4 victory over Magda Linette in the Wuhan Open quarter-finals.

The world number four will face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals on Saturday, after the US Open champion beat Magdalena Frech 6-2 6-2.

Gauff, 20, made eight double-faults against Poland’s Linette but was dominant on her opponent’s serve, winning 14 of 21 return points in the opening set.

“I played well, overall, maybe two bad games,” said Gauff, who has won her past nine matches.

Linette, 32, recovered slightly in the second set before one of her 22 unforced errors gave Gauff the only break of serve in the set, which wrapped up the American’s win.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champion Sabalenka extended her unbeaten record in Wuhan to 15 matches.

The Belarusian, 26, hit 42 winners in 16 games against Frech of Poland, securing victory in one hour and 23 minutes.

Also on Friday, China’s Wang Xinyu overcame Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6 7-5 7-6 (8-6) in their last-eight tie.

Golf legend John Daly leaves Bryson DeChambeau stunned as he shows off golf cart with built-in DRINKS COOLER

JOHN DALY is a favourite amongst golf fans for his larger than life personality and unique approach to the sport.

And now two-time US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is a firm believer after Daly showed off his unusual golf cart.

The pair played a round together as part of DeChambeau’s YouTube series in which he attempts to break 50 with various golf stars.

Famous figures such as Donald Trump and Phil Mickelson have appeared on the show, but Daly left his host stunned in typical fashion.

Before a club was even swung, the former Open and PGA Championship winner paused to show off his golf cart.

That is because it has been modified with a built-in cooler to store Daly’s alcoholic beverages in the cart’s bonnet.

Daly, 58, revealed it follows him everywhere he goes, and he then took out a can of one of his Good Boy John Daly Cocktails, which he described as: “The best non-carbonated drink in the world.”

A shocked DeChambeau burst out laughing and said: “Are you kidding me? Oh my gosh.”

Daly has built a reputation for his party lifestyle and he frequently drinks and smokes while on course.

But he joked he slowed down during his round with DeChambeau, suggesting he started drinking at 9am and had 20 drinks by the time the video began.

He also gifted DeChambeau a box of cigars, with Daly’s smoking antics making him popular amongst fans.

At the PGA Championship this year the veteran took a puff from a cigarette during practice, leading to praise from fans.
