Formula 1’s planned 2026 cars are now about two seconds per lap faster as the result of regulation changes made by teams and the FIA.

Outline plans for the next generation of F1 cars were revealed ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix but, following concerns expressed about their likely performance level, work began on making potential tweaks.

Those efforts have now reached a conclusion, with the FIA’s head of single seater matters Nikolas

Tombazis saying that the new version of the regulations should lift the cars to be around just one second per lap slower than the current challengers.

“There has been an increase of performance of the car by probably about 50 points of downforce,” he said.

“This has brought the performance from what maybe was minus 40% compared to current cars, to around minus 15% in terms of downforce.

“In terms of performance, the resulting lap time of the cars is very close to current cars. All that has been done as was promised in June.”

Asked what the speed of the cars would have been if no modifications had been made to the regulations that were first published ahead of Canada, Tombazis said: “If we had made no change after June, I guess it would have been probably approximately another two seconds slower.”

What has changed

Outlining where the focus of the regulatory changes had been for 2026 to add downforce and lap time, Tombazis explained that they involved several key areas of the car.

“The main changes on the aerodynamics have been increasing a bit the box in which the front wing lies,” he said.

“We have also added the front wing fence and the style that used to be in previous cars.

“We’ve added some space for devices in front of the front floor, like the sideboard and the leading edge of the sideboard. We’ve increased the size of the diffuser, which starts a bit further forward and is a bit bigger.

“We’ve redesigned some of the bodywork around the front wheels, and there’s still some work ongoing that may hopefully lead to some final tweaks in the next World Council of the rear bodywork, and how that interacts with the diffuser in that area.”

The 2026 changes in more detail 

The changes made in the latest draft of the regulations include several alterations to the front wing, with a larger allowable box region for the front wing elements, and a thicker endplate.

Meanwhile, there’s the addition of a strake beneath the assembly to help direct the airflow, as was the case prior to the 2019 regulatory overhaul, when strakes were removed entirely.

A ‘leading edge device’ has also been introduced for the floor, which can have up to five sections and will clearly contribute to the performance envelope of the floor itself.

Meanwhile, the ‘floor board’ may now have three sections, rather than two, and its dimensional constraints have been adjusted accordingly.

To help reduce flexion on the floor assembly there’s now scope for more metal stays, as their number increases from two to three, whilst six floor board stays are also permitted.

The alterations, albeit not excessive, provide enough potential to increase the downforce for this new generation of cars, as they’re interconnected, with changes made from front-to-rear. 

ALAN HANSEN looked in good spirits as he made a rare visit to one of his former clubs on Saturday.

The Match of the Day legend was joined by his older brother John as they watched Partick Thistle take on Airdrieonians.

Hansen beamed as he was presented with a personalised shirt by his old team at Firhill Stadium.

The 69-year-old was in attendance after a health scare in the summer.

He was taken seriously ill and hospitalised in June before being allowed to complete his recovery at home.

As well as receiving a shirt on Saturday, Hansen also appeared on the pitch, where he was asked how it felt to be back at the club.

The former defender explained: “It feels sensational. It’s great to be here, as I haven’t been here in a long, long time.

“I’ve got so many happy memories, in particular with that team in ’76, that team was fantastic.

“As soon as you went into the dressing room here, you just laughed and laughed. Thank you very much for having me here.”

Hansen spent four years with Partick Thistle before joining Liverpool in 1977.

Meanwhile, his older brother John spent his entire playing career with the Jags.

The pair were treated to a win on Saturday as the Scottish Championship side won 2-1 to remain in the top half.

Hansen’s return comes after he was also seen in good spirits earlier this month.

He was pictured chatting to former Everton winger Alan Irvine whilst popping to the shops.

As well as his spell at Thistle, Hansen also spent 14 years with Liverpool through to his retirement in 1991.

During his time at Anfield, he won 24 trophies, including three European Cups and eight league titles.

In the first season of the 16-team SEC, the league has shown to be even more difficult than we thought it might be. It’s not just that Alabama upset Georgia back in Week 5 to achieve the No. 1 ranking. It’s that Vanderbilt upset then-No. 1-ranked Alabama. It’s that the next best team in the SEC — not the best team in the Big Ten, Big 12 or ACC, who all have undefeated teams in their leagues — received the nod as the No. 1 team in the country.

There have been three No. 1 teams in the first eight weeks of the season, and they all hail from the same conference: S-E-C! However, with Georgia’s 30-15 win against Texas, we’re liable to see the Associated Press ranking catch up with me and rank Oregon, currently sitting at 7-0 with a win at home against an exceptional Ohio State team, as the new consensus No. 1 team in America.

However … There is an argument for Georgia taking back the No. 1 ranking it held to start the season, and it begins with the Bulldogs going on the road to secure a double-digit victory over the Longhorns. That is the best in the country. The 15-point win on the Forty Acres stands above Oregon’s one-point win over Ohio State at Autzen, and the Bulldogs accomplished the feat with quarterback Carson Beck throwing three interceptions and completing just 23 of 41 passes for 175 yards with zero touchdowns.

Georgia’s win over Texas was a dominant and vintage Kirby Smart defensive performance, where Texas could do next to nothing for two quarters and trailed UGA 23-0 at halftime. This while the Dawgs have not played a complete game on offense, defense or special teams this season.

But winning must be respected, and losing must be punished. So, Oregon is the No. 1 team here — for now. But watch out if this Georgia team finds a way to play complete football.

Georgia, even at No. 2, feels inevitable once again.

With that, here’s a look at my top 25 rankings following Week 8 of the college football season:

1. Oregon (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated Purdue, 35-0

The Ducks showed no signs of a hangover following their 32-31 win against Ohio State last week, making light work of the Boilermakers. Dillon Gabriel was scarily efficient, completing 21 of 25 passes for 290 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

2. Georgia (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Texas, 30-15

Georgia has yet to play a perfect game in all three phases, but good teams find ways to win big games, and that’s exactly what Kirby Smart’s team did on Saturday. While Carson Beck struggled throughout, Trevor Etienne picked up the slack, rushing for three touchdowns in the win over the No. 1-ranked team in America.

3. Ohio State (5-1)

Week 8 result: Idle

4. Penn State (6-0)

Week 8 result: Idle

5. Texas (6-1)

Week 8 result: Lost to Georgia, 30-15

Texas is a good football team, but the SEC is simply too deep for teams to come out of this league unblemished. Quinn Ewers threw for 211 yards with two touchdowns and a pick, while Georgia’s defense held Texas to just 29 yards on the ground. The Longhorns have now lost their last five home games against top-five opponents.

6. Miami (Fla.) (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated Louisville, 52-45

Canes quarterback Cam Ward completed 21 of 32 passes with four passing touchdowns in a rollicking defeat of the Cardinals. Miami has now scored 50 points or more in four games this season, which is the most by any Canes team in a single season.

7. Clemson (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Virginia, 48-31

The Tigers have looked like the best-positioned challenger to Miami’s dominance, outside of undefeated Pitt. Since losing to Georgia 34-3 back in Week 1, they’ve scored 40 or more in five of their last six games.

8. Iowa State (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated UCF, 38-35

Following an interception that looked every bit like being returned for a backbreaking touchdown, UCF defensive back Braeden Marshall needlessly dropped the ball before breaking the plane and left Iowa State a chance to mount a comeback. That’s exactly what Rocco Becht and the Cyclones did.

In a gritty win, Becht threw for 274 yards and ran for 97 with three total TDs to keep Iowa State undefeated.

9. BYU (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated Oklahoma State, 38-35

This team feels like 2022 Texas Christian. Are the Cougars perfect? Well, their record says they are. And they’re certainly one of the two best teams in the Big 12, and that will be good enough to get them into the College Football Playoff.

10. LSU (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Arkansas, 34-10

LSU tailback Caden Durham rushed for 101 yards with three touchdowns in a game that the Tigers broke open late in the second half. They maintain their unbeaten streak in SEC play and will face another undefeated SEC foe in Texas A&M on Saturday.

11. Tennessee (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Alabama, 24-17

Riding tailback Dylan Sampson, who rushed for more than 100 yards in the second half alone, the Vols beat their hated rival for just the second time in 18 years. With the win, Tennessee keeps its SEC title and CFP hopes alive.

12.  Indiana (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated Nebraska, 56-7

The Hoosiers are one of just three undefeated teams left in the Big Ten, and they look like a legitimate threat to play in the Big Ten championship. Indiana has not trailed an opponent in any game it has played this season.

13. Notre Dame (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Georgia Tech, 31-13

The Fighting Irish came back from a 7-0 deficit for the second time in as many weeks to grab a win. Without Haynes King at quarterback, the Yellow Jackets leaned on Zach Pyron, who completed 20 of 36 passes for 269 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Notre Dame’s defense bowed up and held Georgia Tech scoreless in the second and third quarters.

14. Texas A&M (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Mississippi State, 34-24

The Aggies held on to defeat the Bulldogs and keep their undefeated SEC season intact. Texas A&M is now one of just two programs in the league yet to take a loss in conference play. The Aggies’ only loss this season was to a top-25 Notre Dame team.

15. Missouri (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Auburn, 21-17

The Tigers scored a touchdown with 46 seconds left in the game to seal a comeback win against Auburn. With the victory, not only did Missouri maintain its place in this set of rankings, but it also remains on the bubble for the CFP. Mizzou trailed Auburn 17-6 in the fourth quarter before its comeback.

16. Boise State (5-1)

Week 8 result: Idle

17. Kansas State (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated West Virginia, 45-18

Kansas State is off to its first 6-1 start since 2014 following an impressive win over West Virginia. With WVU selling out to stop DJ Giddens and the Wildcat rushing attack, quarterback Avery Johnson completed 19 of 29 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns.

18. Illinois (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Michigan, 21-7

The win marked the Illini’s first victory against Michigan since 2009 and their third against a team that has been ranked in the top 25. They handed Michigan a second loss in as many Saturdays, marking the first time since 2020 that the Wolverines have lost back-to-back games.

19. Alabama (5-2)

Week 8 result: Lost to Tennessee, 24-17

After earning the No. 1 ranking following a win over Georgia, the Tide have now dropped two of their last three — both losses coming against programs from the state of Tennessee — and might be the only No. 1-ranked team after the season began not to make the CFP.

20. Pitt (6-0)

Week 8 result: Idle

21. Ole Miss (5-2)

Week 8 result: Idle

22. SMU (6-1)

Week 8 result: Defeated Stanford, 40-10

Along with Miami, Clemson and Pitt, the Mustangs are undefeated in conference play. Kevin Jennings passed for more than 300 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in a rout of the Cardinal.

23. Army (7-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated East Carolina, 45-28

The Black Knights mauled the Pirates, and quarterback Bryson Daily accounted for 318 yards — including 171 rushing yards — in the win.

24. Navy (6-0)

Week 8 result: Defeated Charlotte, 51-17

The Midshipmen led Charlotte 38-0 — with 10:24 left in the second quarter. The win was marked by three passing touchdowns from quarterback Blake Horvath and two interceptions returned for TDs by Dashaun Peele, who is the first Navy player ever to perform that feat in a game.

25. Colorado (5-2)

Week 8 result: Defeated Arizona, 34-7

The Buffaloes are 5-2 for the first time since 2005 and look like a latecomer to a Big 12 title-contending party with a signature win against Arizona on the road. One where it played the second half without Travis Hunter.

Arsenal never recovered from Saliba’s dismissal – after a VAR intervention – for fouling Evanilson as the Bournemouth star appeared to be through on goal.

Arteta’s side have only dropped points this season in games when they have gone down to ten men.

And Rice raged: “We’ve kicked ourselves in the foot three times in eight games and we got away with it at home to Brighton and away at Manchester City.

“I am proud of the players for fighting but the naivety, we need to stop making mistakes as you want 11 players for 90 minutes.

“We can’t make silly mistakes. You need all your best players on the pitch at all times. The belief is so high and we will stick together.

“This is football — whatever happens, the most important thing is  you stick together.”

Late goals by Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert via a penalty – after David Raya fouled Evanilson – gave the Cherries a stunning win and KO’d Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season.

Arteta was forced to drag an angry Kai Havertz away from the officials at full-time, but the Arsenal boss insisted the blame lay at their own door.

Ref Robert Jones initially gave Saliba a yellow for dragging down Evanilson just inside his own half but Stockley Park urged a review to suggest a red.

Arteta, whose side are third and one point behind leaders Liverpool,  said: “It was an impossible task. An accident waiting to happen not getting the points.

“I can’t fault the team. It was a decision made on the pitch.

“That decision was changed — and it won’t change twice.

“We need to play 11 with 11. We got away with it twice, but we have to accept it, move on.”

Arsenal played with ten against Brighton and Manchester City – drawing  1-1 and 2-2 respectively having taken the lead after Rice and Leandro Trossard were red-carded.

TEN-MAN Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season as brilliant Bournemouth dealt them a South Coast setback.

The Gunners travelled to face Andoni Iraola’s men having won five and drawn three of their opening eight matches this term.

But their task was made a tricky one when William Saliba was shown a red card on the half-hour.

Ryan Christie brilliantly fired the hosts into a deserved lead following a well-worked set piece routine 20 minutes from time.

Justin Kluivert then sealed his side’s incredible 2-0 victory from the penalty spot on 79 minutes.

Here’s how SunSport rated each Gunners performer on the day.

DAVID RAYA – 5
Was lucky to get away with one poor pass out from the back early on. Made amends for another error by saving smartly with the legs to deny Marcus Tavernier after initially spilling a Semenyo cross-cum-shot before clumsily conceding the penalty.

BEN WHITE – 4
England outcast was back in the team after four games out, but did not look 100 per cent fit and found it tough going containing the lively Antoine Semenyo down the Bournemouth left in the first half and Dango Ouattara in the second.

WILLIAM SALIBA – 3
Usually calm and collected under pressure but paid the price for a rare moment of panic when he hauled down Bournemouth striker Evanilson to get himself sent off and will miss next weekend’s crunch clash at home to title rivals Liverpool as a result.

GABRIEL – 5
Given the captain’s armband in the absence of the stricken Bukayo Saka, but not at his commanding best, especially after losing centre-back partner Saliba. Did not really step up to the leadership plate.

RICCARDO CALAFIORI – 6
Did a better job containing Semenyo when Bournemouth’s dangerman switched wings at half-time than White did in the first half, but unable to have his usual influence going forward.

THOMAS PARTEY – 5
Back in his traditional central midfield berth after being used as an emergency right back in the 3-1 win over Southampton. Was second best up against Bournemouth’s impressive Lewis Cook.

DECLAN RICE – 5
Another of Arsenal’s international contingent who looked sluggish after the break from domestic duty. Struggled to impose himself on the game in midfield and unable to get forward as much as he usually does. Did his bit dropping into the back-line after Saliba’s dismissal.

RAHEEM STERLING – 4
Former England man was deployed on the right wing in place of the injured Bukayo Saka and gave the ball away a few times when in promising positions before being sacrificed after the Saliba red card.

MIKEL MERINO – 5
Finally able to make his full Premier League debut after an injury-affected start to his Arsenal career and showed some nice touches. Also fired into the side-netting with the visitors’ best first half opening.

LEANDRO TROSSARD – 4
Started the game well but sold Saliba short with a poor back pass that led to the red card and disappeared from the action after that before being subbed shortly after the half-hour mark.

KAI HAVERTZ – 5
The German cut an isolated figure up front, especially after Arsenal were reduced to ten men, but worked tirelessly for the team without ever looking like adding to his run of scoring in the previous four games in all competitions.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb was seen in the stands with an earpiece in and using his phone.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher tweeted: “Was Webb involved in the decision-making of the red card for Saliba??” before quickly deleting the post.

It is understood Webb was listening to communications from the officials and VAR team, which is standard procedure, and had no input.

Cherries boss Andoni Iraola said: “It was quite a mature win because it is tricky playing against ten.

“We had to control the game, attack, but don’t lose our minds as  they can be a threat still.”

It was an action-packed day at the United States Grand Prix, featuring both the Sprint race and qualifying. Max Verstappen delivered a dominant performance to win the Sprint, while the intense midfield battle heated up as teams fought for crucial points in the Constructors’ Championship.
