Tottenham 2-1 Man City LIVE RESULT: Spurs STUN Pep's City in Carabao Cup, Liverpool beat Brighton, Palace shock Villa

So it’s revenge for Newcastle following Sunday’s Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge.

And Eddie Howe’s side have also avenged last season’s Carabao Cup KO at the hands of Chelsea.

They’re through to the last eight and a kind draw will evoke memories of two seasons ago when they reached the Wembley final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.

Chelsea huffed and puffed in the second half but never looked like overturning the Toon’s 2-0 interval lead.

Newcastle took a trip down memory lane to ignite their season and dump last season’s beaten finalists Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup.

Having been out of sorts for much of the campaign so far, the Toon players rediscovered the energy, flair and goalscoring threat of recent years to lift spirits among a fanbase which was starting to doubt them.

This was the Newcastle who destroyed Chelsea 12 months ago and the previous season too, the red-hot hosts who had previously turned St James’ Park into a foreboding fortress, not the anaemic, goal-shy side of late.

Chelsea have been more pedigree than pantomine in recent weeks but this was a night they resorted to southern softies mode against opponents with the bit between their teeth.

To be fair to the visitors, they had carried the greater attacking threat in the opening 20 minutes but once they gifted Newcastle the lead, there was an inevitability about the outcome.

The two goals which separated the sides, scored in the 23rd and 26th minutes, were both messy, not that the celebrating Toon Army cared a hoot about that.

If Erik ten Hag was watching in Amsterdam he must have been wondering if this was indeed the same Manchester United team. Why does this always happen?

The old boss goes, his assistant takes over and the team transforms overnight. It makes you wonder what Ruud van Nistelrooy was doing on the training ground in the first place.

Much of this victory that put the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup was down to the strength of the opposition. Leicester City fielded a team with nine changes and was similar in strength to that which drew 0-0 with Walsall in the last round before winning on penalties.

United by contrast were strong, Van Nistelrooy wasn’t going to pass this chance up to be a winner from the Old Traford dug out. Mind you to be fair to him whoever pulls on a United shirt nowadays nothing can be guaranteed.

So credit Van Nistelrooy for getting a tune out of this lot just two days after Ten Hag was dismissed. The regular boos heard here became cheers and smiles replaced frowns and shaking heads.

It was reminiscent of..well when they played Barnsley in the last round and won 7-0 but not much else in recent memory.

This playing out from the back is all very impressive when it comes off…but how many times does it land teams in the you-know-what.

It did just that for Aston Villa, when Diego Carlos slid the ball to Daichi Kamada and the Palace substitute drilled in the winner.

The old down-towner might not be so pleasant on the eye, but you don’t concede from it!

Pep Guardiola’s injury problems continue to pile up as Savinho has been forced off on a stretcher with what looks like a right ankle issue.

The Brazilian, who was impressing, appeared to suffer it in an innocuous challenge with Destiny Udogie by the touchline.

But he ended up going down and had to be carried off, looking in considerable pain, being replaced by rookie Jacob Wright.

Guardiola is already without Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, Kyle Walker and Rodri due to injury.

Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal in 274 days to put Arsenal on course for the quarter-finals.

But the Brazilian was upstaged by teen sensation Ethan Nwaneri who is becoming the stand out star of the Carabao Cup for the Gunners.

After grabbing two against Bolton in round three, the 17-year-old underlined his potential AGAIN here by curling home a first-half beauty.

He came agonisingly close to adding a couple more too before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation from the visiting fans just before the end.

While this competition may not be the priority for Mikel Arteta, fans will be hoping they can go all the way so they can see more of Nwaneri.

The only downside to a highly-satisfactory night for the Emirates chief was that his team did not score more.

Preston had won just three of their last 12 matches but they have been hard to beat since Paul Heckingbottom took over early in the season.

They have also done well in this competition – knocking out Championship high-fliers Sunderland and then claiming a Prem scalp by sending Fulham out in an epic penalty shoot-out.

But they were no match for Arteta’s side which showed eight changes from the team which drew with Liverpool on Sunday.

Ex-Sunderland hero desperate for Harrogate to down Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham and seal star FA Cup dream

Ex-Sunderland hero desperate for Harrogate to down Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham and seal star FA Cup dream

PAUL THIRLWELL almost helped his boyhood club reach the FA Cup Final – now he is desperate for one of his Harrogate Town players to secure their own fairytale.

The 45-year-old grew up following Sunderland home and away alongside his parents and brother, which included a trip to Wembley for their 1992 final defeat to Liverpool.

Thirlwell then burst on the scene aged 20 as the Black Cats thumped Chelsea, who included stars like Marcel Desailly and Gianfranco Zola, 4-1 in the Premier League in 1999.

But it would be a midfielder he came up against that day that would help inflict FA Cup heartbreak on him four seasons later when player-manager Dennis Wise guided Millwall to a 1-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford in the semi.

Thirlwell told Sun Sport: “We’ll probably never get a better chance to get to the final with it being two Championship teams at the time. Unfortunately it didn’t go our way but it was a great experience. It’s just a shame we got done as we’d have faced Man United.

“I’d played against him [Wise] before on my debut but everyone knows what he was like, tenacious and knowing all the dark arts.

“But Millwall had some good players like him, Tim Cahill who scored on the day and went on to have an unbelievable career, Danny Dichio, but they also had that edge that made them so tough to play against.

“Of course you want to win, but when you look back and think that you played in a semi-final then you appreciate now that it is quite a big achievement.”

These days Thirlwell is assistant manager to Simon Weaver at League Two Harrogate Town, a club he finished his playing career at after spells with Sheffield United, Derby and Carlisle.

“I moved to Wetherby and was totally unaware that it was next to one of the club’s directors. “He maybe spoke to the gaffer and then mentioned me and after a chat we hit it off straight away.

“I didn’t just want to go anywhere as a player as I’d dipped my foot into the coaching so I wanted a bit of both.

“I got involved with coaching the U21s here and then we went full-time and the opportunity arose to become assistant manager and wow, here we are still here nearly a decade later.”

During that time they have climbed from non-league into the EFL and enjoyed FA Trophy joy in 2020.

But as they prepare to host Hollywood-owned Wrexham, who are pushing for League One promotion, Thirlwell says that he is desperate for long-serving star Warren Burrell, 34, to get his big FA Cup moment this year.

He said: “You’d probably have to speak to some of the younger lads now but I think definitely for people of my era that the cup still has the magic.

“I keep trying to tell our lads, who are all Arsenal, United, Spurs supporters, that we have to get Warren, who is a huge Liverpool fan, to Anfield. It’s one of those places that he’ll never play at unless it comes in the cup, so just things like that make the cup massive for me.”

And Thirlwell, who admitted the game being televised adds an “extra edge”, says the whole club from top to bottom want to put on a show against the big-spending Welsh side owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

“When you get a big club at home in the early rounds then you are hoping that it gets on the tele and as it happens we have,” Thirlwell said.

“And I do think it helps, not that anybody tries harder, but it does give you an extra edge when you know it’s on TV.

“But everyone at the club wants to get everything right on the day as you are showcasing the whole club.”

He added: “We are one of, if not the, smallest club in the Football League but we have a go on and off the pitch as best we can.

“We are realistic to the point that usually bigger clubs do win these games but we are going into it with optimism and want to cause an upset. Someone will this year so why not us?”

76ers star Joel Embiid verbally confronts, then shoves, Philadelphia reporter

76ers star Joel Embiid verbally confronts, then shoves, Philadelphia reporter

A visibly angry Joel Embiid shouted at and eventually shoved a Philadelphia newspaper columnist in a locker room altercation after the struggling Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

The NBA quickly said it has opened an investigation into the matter.

Embiid took issue with Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes, who mentioned the All-Star center’s late brother and his son — both named Arthur — in columns questioning Embiid’s professionalism and effort not being in shape after playing in the Paris Olympics. Embiid has yet to play for the 76ers this season.

As reporters entered the locker room to talk to players, Embiid stood and confronted Hayes.

“The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to … live with the consequences,” Embiid said to Hayes.

Embiid continued, with several instances of profanity in the next few sentences. Hayes offered an apology, which Embiid did not want. “That’s not the f——— first time.” Embiid said.

Embiid later said that he doesn’t care what reporters say. “But you do,” Hayes answered.

Embiid appeared to get louder at that point, and not long afterward pushed Hayes on the shoulder while the team’s public relations chief got between them. Another PR person moved Tyrese Maxey’s interview to the hallway outside the locker room, trying to clear reporters.

At the same time, a team security person asked the media not to report on what had happened. Embiid yelled over the security guard.

“They can do whatever they want,” Embiid said. “I don’t give a s—-.”

Embiid had called Hayes out in a press conference following practice on Friday at the team’s training facility, referring to him as “Marcus, whatever his name is” and questioning critics of his prolonged absence.

Hayes recently wrote a story saying that Embiid disrespects the 76ers and the game, and that the team should consider giving fans refunds when Embiid doesn’t play.

“I’ve done way too much for this … city to be treated like this, done way too … much,” Embiid said Friday. “I wish I was as lucky as other ones, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not trying and I’m not doing whatever it takes to be out there, which I’m gonna be here pretty soon.”

Hayes was not at the practice on Friday. It remains unclear when Embiid will play, and the NBA probe will determine if disciplinary action is warranted.

‘We couldn’t handle Bournemouth’ – how Man City’s 32-game unbeaten run ended

'We couldn't handle Bournemouth' - how Man City's 32-game unbeaten run ended

All good things must come to an end.

Manchester City’s 32-game unbeaten Premier League is over after a lacklustre performance led to a 2-1 loss at in-form Bournemouth.

That incredible run was a club record without tasting defeat.

Saturday’s loss also means City have dropped to second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by two points.

“They [Bournemouth] were another pace today and we could not handle it,” Guardiola said.

“We knew we couldn’t match the intensity. We have talked about it. It was an open game.

“We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory.”

Guardiola has overseen 488 games since being appointed as City manager in 2016, winning 360, drawing 60 and losing 68.

Prior to Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth, City’s last loss came at Aston Villa on 6 December 2023.

During that run they picked up 26 victories and six draws, scoring an impressive 80 goals and conceding just 26.

They amassed 84 points and went on to end 2023-24 with the Premier League title – winning the top flight for a third successive season.

Arsenal, who finished second last term, were the next best performing team during City’s unbeaten streak.

However, the Gunners lost five times during that period, scored five fewer goals and collected just 71 points.

Liverpool were the third-best performing team, collecting one fewer point than Arsenal as they won 21, drew seven and lost four.

“We would like to keep defending it but how many games and months we did it… it’s great,” Guardiola told Sky Sports when asked about going almost a year without losing.

As impressive as City’s form has been over the last 11 months, they remain way off the all-time Premier League record.

Indeed, City are fourth when it comes to longest unbeaten runs since the inception of the Premier League in 1992-93.

Arsenal are top of the pile after enjoying a 49-game stretch without losing between May 2003 and October 2004 – spanning across three seasons.

The Gunners went through the 2003-04 campaign without losing, becoming the only club to achieve that feat, and earning the nickname “The Invincibles”.

Liverpool rank second on that list with a 44-game unbeaten run between January 2019 and February 2020, while Chelsea avoided defeat for 40 matches from October 2004 through to October 2005.

Brandon Moreno styles on Amir Albazi in big win

Brandon Moreno styles on Amir Albazi in big win

Former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno returned to the win column with a stellar performance against Amir Albazi.

The flyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 246 main event at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Moreno (22-8-2 MMA, 10-5-2 UFC) styled on Albazi (17-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) over the 25-minute fight, earning unanimous scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45.

The fight started with a measured pace, with both fighters working behind jabs. Moreno’s primary weapon was the left hand, which set up the occasional combination. Albazi looked for a few leg kicks in his offense but was outstruck by the former champion in the opening round.

Moreno found success early in Round 2 with a solid left head kick that wobbled Albazi. After quickly getting up from a takedown, Moreno continued to lead the dance with effective striking on the feet, stumbling Albazi with a punch in the last minute.

With Albazi bruised and bloodied, Moreno poured on the pressure early in Round 3, getting a bit sloppy at times as he tried to create a big moment. Albazi found a home for a few solid punches, but Moreno quickly settled back in and continued to lead the fight.

Albazi’s corner implored their fighter to ramp up the aggressiveness heading into the championship rounds. That’s easier said than done against Moreno, who was loose and flowing with his offense.

In Round 4, Albazi did let his hands go more, but Moreno was more than willing to quickly return fire as he maintained control of the center of the octagon.

Albazi entered the final round needing a finish, but he was met with an aggressive Moreno, who came out fighting like he was the one down on the scorecards.

Shortly after an eye poke to Moreno caused a brief pause in the action, the former champ cracked Albazi with a big punch. The Canadian crowd responded with chants for Moreno.

The Mexico-born fighter wasn’t done yet, though.

He stayed on the hunt, cracking Albazi with more punches, and even attempted a rolling thunder kick in the closing seconds to end the fight with flair.

The result ended a two-fight skid for Moreno, as he ended up on the wrong end of a pair of split decisions against Alexandre Pantoja in a title fight at UFC 290 and Brandon Royval in a February main event.

During his post-fight interview, Moreno expressed his desire to dive into a full plate of food, but more importantly, regain his flyweight title and once again rule the 125-pound division.

For Albazi, his return to action for the first time since last June did not go his way, as he struggled to find momentum. As a result, his six-fight winning streak comes to an end with just his second loss as a pro.
