Women's T20 World Cup: Australia begin title defence with six-wicket win

Australia began the defence of their T20 World Cup title with a comfortable six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Sharjah.

The six-time champions suffered a slight wobble, falling to 35-3 in pursuit of just 94, but opener Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 43 led them over the line with 34 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka were thoroughly outplayed in a pitiful batting effort and crawled to 93-7 from their 20 overs as Australia started in predictably ruthless fashion.

And while Sri Lanka fought bravely with the three early wickets on a slow pitch offering some uneven bounce, they ultimately paid the price for such a paltry total as Australia’s strength in depth once again prevailed.

The sluggish pitch did not allow for Australia’s usual free-flowing style, as captain Alyssa Healy fell for four, Georgia Wareham was clumsily run out for three and star all-rounder Ellyse Perry was bowled for 17.

Yet Mooney, who was dropped on 22, held her nerve despite struggling in the brutal heat.

There were also some uncharacteristic mistakes in the field, with five front-foot no-balls bowled and Darcie Brown dropping a simple catch, but Healy’s side recovered brilliantly with a relentless display to stifle Sri Lanka.

Nilakshi de Silva and Harshitha Samarawickrama made 29 and 23 respectively but their efforts came from 35 and 40 balls, as captain Chamari Athapaththu’s early departure once again proved costly.

Sri Lanka are now facing a disappointing group-stage exit having lost their two opening matches, needing a big win against India on Wednesday and for other results to go their way.

Australia face New Zealand on Monday, a tantalising prospect after the White Ferns’ emphatic win over India in their opener.

More to follow.

Ancelotti, Real Madrid decide to sell these THREE players in January to strengthen squad amid injury blows: Report- The Week

Ancelotti, Real Madrid decide to sell these THREE players in January to strengthen squad amid injury blows: Report- The Week

Real Madrid, ravaged by a string of bad results and a long list of injuries, may consider a mini-squad overhaul when the January transfer window opens, reports said.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti is himself overseeing the plans for Real Madrid’s “squad restructuring” in January and has already singled out three players to be sold for the overhaul to happen. The trio either failed to live up to the expectations or has serious fitness concerns, costing them a future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

1.  Aurelien Tchouameni (Midfielder)

As earlier reports claimed, Real Madrid is planning to sell their young French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. According to a report by Relevo, Real is not satisfied with Tchouameni’s performance in the middle of the park. The talented youngster who can play as a CDM, CM and even as a CB at times, has not been effective alongside Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham after Toni Kroos decided to hang his boots at the end of last season.

Tchouameni, who played 15 times this season for Real Madrid, is expected to attract bids from multiple teams including Premier League giants.

2. David Alaba (Defender)

Austrian captain David Alaba, 32, is the second player on the list. Despite being one of the most versatile players in the current Real squad, fitness concerns stopped the former Bayern Munich star from performing consistently at the Spanish capital. Alaba, who can play as LB, CB, CDM and even CM, is currently nursing a career-threatening wearing of the knee cartilage.

Alaba never regained full fitness after being sidelined since late last year due to an ACL injury.

3. Ferland Mendy (Defender)

French left-back Ferland Mendy is the final name on the “exit list”. The 29-year-old often gets game time but Ancelotti is not satisfied with his performance, Sportskeeda said in a report. He is considered the weak link in the heart of the Madrid defence and is not very effective going forward either. Bayern’s Canadian international Alphonso Davies has long been linked to Real Madrid, making things further difficult for Mendy who arrived from Lyon in 2019.

Real Madrid injury concerns

Real is without captain Dani Carvajal for the entire season after the right-back tore his ACL last month. First-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is also out injured, along with recent additions Eder Militao, Lucas Vazques and Rodrygo. The situation is catastrophic for the defending European champions particularly in the defense department with only Antonio Ruediger, Ferland Mendy, Vallejo and Fran Gracia in their senior squad to choose from.

Manchester United had only won three of their league games under the Dutchman this season – their worst start EVER.

The final nail in the coffin came after Ten Hag’s side lost 2-1 away to West Ham after a late penalty from Jarrod Bowen.

After he was hit with the axe, Ten Hag hopped on a private jet back to his homeland in Holland.

He was spotted at the De Grolsch Veste on Sunday evening to watch his two former sides compete.

Ten Hag watched on as FC Twente and Ajax played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Eredivisie.

Ten Hag turned out for Twente during his playing career and had two spells at the side.

He made his professional debut with the club back in 1989 before leaving the following year.

But he returned to the Enschede outfit in 1996 for a six-year spell before retiring in 2002.

A second posted: “Hope he coaches Ajax again.”

A third wrote: “Patiently waiting for the next to be sacked so he can take over.”

A fourth. said: “Just want to go back.”

Another added: “Wants his old job back!”

Man United have since replaced Ten Hag with Sporting Lisbon‘s Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese manager has signed a contract worth £6.5million-a-year until 2027.

Barbora Krejcikova criticises Jon Wertheim after forehead remark

Barbora Krejcikova criticises Jon Wertheim after forehead remark

Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova criticised a journalist’s “unprofessional commentary” after he made a remark about her appearance on air.

During a Tennis Channel broadcast on Friday, Jon Wertheim commented on the Czech world number 13’s forehead.

Krejcikova was competing at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where she was knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual runner-up Zheng Qinwen.

Wertheim said his comments were “deeply regrettable” and that he apologised to Krejcikova.

Tennis Channel has removed him from air “indefinitely”.

“You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance,” 28-year-old Krejcikova posted on X., external

“As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary.

“This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in [the] sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.

“These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field.

“I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

In a statement on Sunday, Wertheim said he made the comments in a rehearsal that was “inadvertently” broadcast.

“During a Tennis Channel studio show on Friday, I made some deeply regrettable comments off-air. I acknowledge them. I apologise for them. I reached out immediately and apologised to the player,” he said on X, external.

“What happened? I joined the show by Zoom. In rehearsal we were shown a graphic of a player who had just competed. It showed her at an angle that exaggerated her forehead.

“A few moments later, I was told to frame up my Zoom. I looked at the low camera angle and joked that it made my forehead resemble the photo of the player in question. Someone in the control room chimed in and I bantered back. Though this was a private rehearsal, this exchange inadvertently, and without context, made it to live air.

“I realise: I am not the victim here. It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry.”

In a statement to BBC Sport, Tennis Channel said: “When Tennis Channel became aware of an inappropriate comment about a professional tennis player made by our analyst Jon Wertheim on Friday, we immediately removed him from our air indefinitely.

“The network also apologised to the player, Barbora Krejcikova, as did Jon. Jon has dedicated his career to shining a light on and growing this sport and has been a valued member of our family and the tennis community.

“That said, Tennis Channel holds its employees to a standard of respectfulness for others at all times, a standard that was not met in this moment.”

Champions Trophy: PCB receives BCCI letter stating Indian Team’s refusal to travel to Pakistan. Details here

Champions Trophy: PCB receives BCCI letter stating Indian Team's refusal to travel to Pakistan. Details here

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled a Champions Trophy-related event to be held in Lahore on Monday. This came as the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed receiving a letter from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stating that the Indian Team wouldn’t be travelling to Pakistan.

The international cricketing body had planned a 100-day countdown for the Champions Trophy that was scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February 19 next year. Though there were speculations that the countdown event could be postponed or cancelled, there was no confirmation until Sunday.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that they received a letter from the BCCI citing that the team wouldn’t be travelling to Pakistan for the tournament. The letter sent to the ICC was formally forwarded to PCB.

The PCB said the letter from the BCCI has been forwarded to the Government of Pakistan for their advice and guidance, reported Cricbuzz.

In the letter, the BCCI had reportedly told the ICC it had been advised by the Indian government to avoid sending the team to Pakistan. Earlier, an official had claimed that the BCCI was in discussions with Pakistan and participating nations on the Champions Trophy schedule.

With the BCCI clearing its stance, now the PCB will have to think about the ‘Hybrid Model’. However, the hindrance is that the PCB does not agree to the hybrid model for the tournament, with PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi stating that no talks were held regarding such an idea and the PCB was not ready for that. He added that the PCB would need it in writing any objections on the part of BCCI before he can discuss the issue.

However, the ICC was already preparing for a hybrid scenario considering that India hadn’t travelled to Pakistan for a tournament since the 2008 Asia Cup. The global body has approved a budget of approximately $65 million at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Colombo, which also covers holding matches outside Pakistan.

The Champions Trophy will feature eight teams, including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. The schedule and ticketing details are yet to be announced.
