Alan Shearer being kept in the dark over future of Match of the Day after Gary Lineker exit announcement

Alan Shearer has revealed he ‘hasn’t got a clue’ who will replace Gary Lineker as the host of BBC Match of the Day.

It was confirmed last month that Lineker would be leaving his role of presenter, having worked on the popular football highlights show ever since replacing Des Lynham back in 1999.

The former Tottenham, England, Barcelona and Leicester star will depart at the end of the current campaign.

He has agreed to stay on with the BBC until the 2026 World Cup, when he’ll then pack his bags and walk off into the sunset for good.

When it comes to replacements, several names are in the frame to take over.

One is Mark Chapman, with the 51-year-old possessing the experience required due to his involvement on Sunday’s Match of the Day 2.

Alex Scott has been tipped to potentially replace Lineker, despite Football Focus’ viewing figures falling ever since she took over from Dan Walker in 2021.

And Gabby Logan, Micah Richards and Kelly Cates have all been rumoured to be under consideration behind the scenes as well.

Shearer, however, ‘hasn’t got a clue’ what BBC chiefs will decide to do – with the former Newcastle, Southampton and Blackburn star happy to be kept in the dark.

“I haven’t got a clue what’s going to happen, who will present,” he told The Sun.

“Mark Chapman does Match of the Day 2, so I don’t know whether that means he’ll come into Match of the Day or not.

“I haven’t got a clue. I probably don’t want to know because I wouldn’t want to lie to people when they ask me. It’s probably best that I don’t know.”

Shearer was also asked about whether he’d be interested in replacing Lineker, having been a regular pundit on Match of the Day.

Yet that’s something the 54-year-old isn’t interested in doing.

“I’m not planning to go anywhere soon but no [don’t want to be the presenter]. I enjoy the punditry side of it,” he added.

“I don’t know whether you saw it, I did it, I opened the show a couple of weeks ago and I only had eight words to do and I was sweating then. No, they’ll get someone else.”

Given how long Shearer and Lineker have worked together, the former can be forgiven for feeling sad about the departure of his friend.

But he’s insisted they’ll enjoy their time left on the show together and that Lineker remains one of the best presenters in the business.

“It’s been as it was. There’s been no change. I think it’s fine that it’s out. It’s better for everyone,” he said.

“Gary’s been an amazing presenter for so long and still is.

“I think it’s good that he’s going out on a high in terms of the World Cup. To go out and finish in America, that’s without a doubt going on a high.

“Thomas Tuchel’s ultimately been hired with the objective of winning it and that would be pretty special.

“We’ll just enjoy the rest of the season. We always have a laugh and a joke on a Saturday, whether it’s about his team Leicester or Newcastle or whoever it may be and I think it’s really important that that will carry on.

“He’s done it for so long – 25 years will be his legacy of presenting the iconic football programme.”
