In an interview with The Athletic, external in November, Elis said: “When I woke [from the coma] I didn’t remember that I was a footballer.
“I didn’t remember that I was in France, I didn’t remember that I was Honduran. The doctors thought it was going to be difficult for me to be well again.
“The first two weeks were difficult, because mentally I wasn’t 100%. But day by day, I started to get better.”
Elis also revealed that he required help to recover his reading and writing skills, which he “lost in large parts” after his injury.
During his rehabiliation, as he contemplated his return to action, he was then left without a club as Bordeaux’s financial problems led to them taking amateur status and dropping down to the fourth tier.
Elis previously had spells playing in Mexico, the United States and Portugal before moving to France.
