Ally McCoist Slammed For ‘Nauseating’ Greenwood Praise vs Liverpool
TNT Sports commentators Ally McCoist and Darren Fletcher have been called out for over-complimenting ex-Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood in Marseille’s clash with Liverpool. The English attacker started for Roberto De Zerbi’s side and made his first appearance against a Premier League club since his controversial Old Trafford departure.
Greenwood has been at Marseille since the summer of 2024, when he arrived from United in a £26.6m deal. He was exiled from the English giants’ squad after he was arrested back in January 2022 and later charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.
Those charges were dropped against the 24-year-old when key witnesses withdrew from the case and he was free to return to football. But he wasn’t welcomed back into English football, and was instead sent on loan to Spanish side Getafe, before being sold to Marseille.
Greenwood impressed McCoist during his appearance against Liverpool on Wednesday night in the Champions League. The Scottish pundit praised the Englishman on several occasions, and his commentary upset viewers.
Some English football fans are still disturbed by the nature of Greenwood’s case and the way he has been allowed to continue his career. While he hasn’t been accepted back into the Premier League or the England national team, he is still participating in one of Europe’s top five leagues and Europe’s elite club competition.
McCoist and Fletcher’s commentary on the former United academy star caused a stir online, with many hitting out at the TNT Sports duo. One fan let their feelings known: “Fletcher and McCoist propping Greenwood (sick emoji).”
Every time the Marseille man broke forward on the ball, he appeared to catch Fletcher and McCoist’s eye. But their rave reviews irritated another supporter: “The way McCoist and Fletcher get giddy every time they talk about Greenwood is genuinely nauseating.”
This was the stance of another fan who suggested they were treating him more favourably than others on the pitch: “Fletch and McCoist making Greenwood their star boy is making me sick.”
One viewer added: “”Fletch” and McCoist are so complimentary of Greenwood here that it makes you wonder why he’s playing in France.”
Another joked about the Scotsman’s admiration: “Ally McCoist loves Greenwood doesn’t he?”
Controversial Campaign For Greenwood England Return
Many have put the case firmly to one side and suggested that Greenwood not only deserves to be playing club football but also to return to the England setup. An X account with 1.5 million followers encouraged fans to get behind their campaign for him to be reinstated to the Three Lions squad ahead of the World Cup.
The caption for this read: “How much longer can Thomas Tuchel ignore Mason Greenwood?” and eventually a survey followed, and it’s not the only time social media accounts with significant followings have used the controversial footballer’s banishment from the national team for clicks.
