Ange Postecoglou facing the sack at Tottenham after ‘painful’ admission following Chelsea loss

Ange Postecoglou is fighting for his job at Tottenham after a shocking run of form culminated in a humiliating 4-3 defeat to Chelsea at home on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs have won just once in seven games – a run that has included losses to Bournemouth, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace.

Tottenham have had injury troubles, not least to star defensive duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, who both started on Sunday only to be subbed off with more fitness woes.

But the north London outfit have performed torridly of late with the pressure ramping up further and further on Postecoglou.

There were rumours that Spurs chief Daniel Levy was prepared to wield the axe after losing to Bournemouth on Thursday.

And those will only intensify after cameras panned to the club chairman as the full-time whistle blew at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday – a match they had taken a 2-0 lead in.

Postecoglou admitted he was left ruing Tottenham’s capitulation, which included two second-half penalties conceded.

“It’s a sore one for sure, it’s painful,” the Australian told Sky Sports.

“We started the game really well and then we lose Cristian Romero and we had to reshuffle.

“We still had some big moments to get a third and finish it off. The second half was a ding-dong for long and then they scored.

“The two penalties weren’t great, we need a bit of discipline in the box.

“It’s a key point when you lose a key player in the first 20 minutes, He couldn’t continue so it’s not ideal.

“We didn’t play well in midweek but we did here. They’re a top side, you have got to give credit to them. We got distracted in key moments.

“We need to realise we are tough to stop when we do play our football.

The two penalties were poor. When you’re playing these top teams, the momentum shifts quickly.”

Tottenham had raced into an early two-goal lead against Chelsea as a vociferous crowd cheered them on.

Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski made the most of two Marc Cucurella slips but the Blues struck back through Jadon Sancho with a sweet strike before half-time.

The Blues dominated after the break and at one point had 82 per cent possession before Yves Bissouma took Moises Caicedo out in the box, leading to the first of Cole Palmer’s penalties.

The England international then helped set up Enzo Fernandez to take the lead before another penalty was awarded to the visitors as Palmer stepped up and made no mistake again – breaking a Premier League record in the process.

Heung-min Son scored a late consolation but the damage was already done as Tottenham fans had already made their way to the exits.

It leaves Spurs 11th in the Premier League with 20 points from 11 matches – seven points off fourth-placed Manchester City.
