Anthony Joshua finally delivers his honest verdict on Tyson Fury’s performance against Usyk

Anthony Joshua’s wish for Tyson Fury almost came true when Fury fought Oleksandr Usyk last year.

Usyk and Fury met twice within a seven-month period and on both occasions it was the Ukrainian who emerged victorious. Their first encounter was historic, with the undisputed heavyweight championship on the line — a distinction not held in the division since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999.

Usyk claimed a split-decision victory, but the fight nearly ended inside the distance in the ninth round. A left cross sparked a fierce barrage from Usyk, forcing Fury into retreat, with only the ropes preventing him from hitting the canvas.

Referee Mark Nelson eventually administered a standing eight count to the 6ft 9ins “Gypsy King,” who was on the brink of suffering his first stoppage defeat. Fury was ultimately rescued by the bell, which rang to end the round as Usyk pressed forward.

Watching from ringside was Anthony Joshua, who had lost to Usyk in 2021 and again in 2022. Speaking on Mr Verzace podcast, Joshua recalled the drama of the moment when asked about Fury’s performance.

“He nearly got knocked out! I wish Usyk caught him with one more shot. I was on the edge of my seat throwing the punches. I wish Usyk knocked him out — he needs to be humbled. But I swear if I ever got the opportunity, I’ll make sure I lay him flat on his back.”

Joshua could finally meet the ‘Gypsy King’ next year, with Riyadh Season keen to make the long-awaited British super-fight a reality, potentially allowing both men a warm-up bout beforehand.
