Anthony Joshua Net Worth and Boxing Future After Fatal Car Crash

The entire boxing community will be watching and waiting to find out the full extent of Anthony Joshua’s injuries over the coming days, after the British heavyweight boxer was involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria.

Joshua was a passenger in the Lexus Jeep, travelling on one of the African country’s busiest motorways dubbed the “Highway of Death”, which connects the largest city, Lagos, to Ibadan, when the accident happened.

The car crash tragically claimed the lives of two people – Joshua’s coaches, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Both were close personal friends of the fighter.

Joshua, who was in the backseat of the vehicle when it crashed into a stationary car following a tyre blowout, is reported to have suffered minor injuries and was immediately taken to hospital.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 36-year-old, who had been tipped to finally get in the ring for a £100million fight with Tyson Fury, following his win over Paul.

How Much Is Anthony Joshua Worth?

Joshua has built up a huge fortune since winning Olympic gold at London 2012. He won his first 22 bouts as a professional, claiming the WBC, IBF, WBO, WBA and IBO titles in the process.

He would go on to lose to Andy Ruiz Junior – his first defeat – in 2019, before beating the same opponent in the rematch later that year.

He has since lost twice to Oleksansdr Usyk, relinquishing his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles.

His record stands at 29-4 after the defeat of Jake Paul, with his only other defeat coming against Daniel Dubois in 2024.

The bout with Paul was reportedly worth around £70million to each fighter, although AJ would go on to lose almost half of that to US Federal Tax and UK tax and insurance contributions.

Despite that though, Joshua has racked up a small fortune, with his net worth anywhere between $199million (£147million) – as reported by CelebrityNetWorth.com and £232million – as reported by the Sunday Times Rich List (we have added the money received from the Paul fight to both figures that came out before the bout).

The boxer did not actually make £1million until his eighth professional fight, earning numbers in the tens of thousands prior to that win over Konstantin Airich.

He would go on to earn more than £20million from his next ten fights before pocketing around £15million for his impressive win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2017.

While he eventually lost a fight to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019, he would earn £66million from that and the rematch, which he won to reclaim his titles.

The biggest paydays were still to come though.

Back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk may have dented his career somewhat, but they bolstered the coffers with £90million earned from both bouts combined.

He pocketed £40million from the win over Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia, before that £70million payday for the fight with Paul.

At 36 years old we will have to wait and see the full extent of his injuries from the crash before we know if and when the boxer can get back into the ring.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the crash, a statement from Matchroom Boxing – Joshua’s promoters – read: “Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier today. With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele have tragically passed away.

“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment.

“He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

Joshua did not have anything lined up, following the win over Paul, but there is one fight everyone wants to see…Joshua vs Tyson Fury.

There has been plenty of talk over the years of Joshua getting into the ring with his long-term rival and it was confirmed to be in process prior to the Paul fight.

Eddie Hearn confirmed last month that plans were in place for Joshua and Fury to finally face off next year after years of talks. However, the car crash has now thrown that into doubt as we wait to see how bad Joshua’s injuries are.
