Manchester City and Aston Villa both dropped points this week thanks to respective draws with Brighton and Crystal Palace, gifting Arsenal a chance to extend their lead in the Premier League against Liverpool
Arsenal were gifted a major boost in their race to the Premier League title this week, as a result of Manchester City and Aston Villa dropping points. City endured a 1-1 draw with Brighton while Villa were held to a goalless stalemate by Crystal Palace.
However, the Gunners missed a key opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table as they played out a 0-0 clash with Liverpool on home soil, which wasn’t without its fair share of drama. A win for Arsenal would have seen the north London club go a mammoth eight points clear of Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues, but fate had other plans.
As a result, Mikel Arteta currently holds a safety net of just six points on City, as he looks to guide his club to their first Premier League title in over two decades. And with a weekend of FA Cup fixtures set to be played this weekend, the Spanish tactician will have to wait a little while longer before he has the chance to cruise further ahead of the manager he was once an assistant to.

Starting with Arsenal, the Gunners are set to face a struggling Nottingham Forest at the City Ground come January 17, before taking on Manchester United on January 25. Mikel Arteta’s men end the month with a trip to Leeds on January 31, before they set their sights on a high-flying Sunderland AFC on February 7.
A trip to the Gtech Community Stadium then ensues five days later, as Arsenal face an in-form Brentford. As for Guardiola’s City, they make the short journey across the city to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on January 17, before they welcome Wolves a week later.
The Cityzens then take on Tottenham Hotspur on February 1, before travelling to Anfield to do battle with Liverpool on February 8. A match against Fulham on home soil then comes three days later.
