Aston Villa now ready to move for Weston McKennie alongside Tammy Abraham
Aston Villa are ready to make a move for a “top-level player”, who they are now crazy about signing, and he could be in line to join alongside Tammy Abraham.
Villa eyeing another new signing alongside Abraham
Villa’s pursuit of Abraham has dragged on throughout the January transfer window, but it appears as though a deal is now edging closer to completion, having reached an agreement in principle.
Getting a new forward through the door was always going to be important for the Villans, following Donyell Malen’s departure, and the Englishman could be a solid acquisition, having scored 13 goals in 26 matches for Besiktas this season.
Signing a new central midfielder has also been on the to-do list for Unai Emery‘s side this month, and having missed out on Conor Gallagher to Tottenham Hotspur, they have now emerged as contenders to sign a different central midfielder.
That is according to a report from Italy (via Sport Witness), which states Aston Villa are now crazy about signing Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, but there could be stiff competition for his signature, with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid also keen.
Such is Villa’s level of interest, they are now ready to make a move for the American, and there is a belief he would favour a move to the Premier League, which could open the door for a move to Villa Park.
With the 27-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, he will be available on a free transfer, and there are signs he could be a shrewd addition to Emery’s squad…
McKennie has kicked on since leaving Leeds
The central midfielder was a part of the Leeds United squad that got relegated from the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, but he has really kicked on since then, bagging seven Serie A assists for Juventus during the 2023-24 campaign.
This season, the Texas-born maestro has also started to prove himself in the Champions League, scoring three goals in Europe’s elite competition, while also receiving high praise from former Juventus boss Thiago Motta early last year.
Aston Villa plotting record move for “incredible” Douglas Luiz alternative
Aston Villa have identified another top-level star to bolster Unai Emery’s first-team ranks thi month.
Motta said: “He has played as a full-back, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder and winger. He’s a top-level player. When I say that a top-level player can play everywhere, it’s because I know what I’m talking about. I’ve been in football for many years.”
McKennie has clearly taken major strides since leaving Elland Road, which suggests the £54k-a-week midfielder could be a solid signing for Aston Villa, with his versatility making him a particularly useful option for Emery.
