Background on Man Utd’s new coaching team | January 2026
STEVE HOLLAND
New to United, the 55-year-old received an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours List, for his services to the game.
A highly regarded coach, he was assistant manager to Gareth Southgate when England went all the way to the Euro 2020 final in 2021, losing to Italy on penalties.
After working with the excellent youth system at Crewe Alexandra, he took over the reins in 2007, as first-team coach, and, via a spell with Stoke City, became Chelsea’s Reserves manager, winning the league with them in 2011.
Promoted into the senior set-up, he was involved when Roberto Di Matteo’s Blues won the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history, in 2012, and worked with ex-Reds manager Jose Mourinho, among others.
Holland even oversaw a Premier League game against Sunderland in 2015 and eventually left Stamford Bridge in 2017, accepting the role of assistant manager to England Under-21s, under Southgate, before they moved to senior level with the Three Lions.
His most recent role was with Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan and he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to bring to the club.
