Benjamin Sesko 'Isn't Good Enough' For Man Utd

Benjamin Sesko struck a brace as Manchester United drew with relegation threatened Burnley on Wednesday evening. The Red Devils went into the game with Darren Fletcher in interim charge following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

United were expected to pick up a win against a Burnley side that hadn’t won in 12 matches going into the contest, but things weren’t straight forward for them at Turf Moor.

The Red Devils went into the break trailing 1-0 after Ayden Heaven’s 13th minute own-goal. Sesko, who has found life at United tough since his £73.7m move in the summer, turned the game on its head as he struck a quickfire brace after the restart.

However, United were unable to claim all three points as Jaidon Anthony’s strike ensured the spoils were shared.

United may not have come away from Lancashire with the three points they wanted, but Sesko’s display was a huge positive for them. The Slovenian has flattered to deceive since his move but was able to score his third and fourth goals for the club.

Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood wasn’t overly complimentary of the 22-year-old after the match, though. Speaking at half-time, Sherwood slammed Sesko and said it was like United were playing with 10 men.

He said: “At this stage Sesko would not have a Man United shirt on for me. I would get Mason Mount on the pitch, I’d put Cunha as a false nine, just get some players who can handle the ball. They are playing with one down at the moment.”

Despite scoring twice in the second half, Sherwood did not change his tune and insisted Sesko wasn’t good enough to play for the club. He said after the match:

“It’s taken six months to turn up at Manchester United and I’m pleased for the lad. He’s had a tough run of it, and I said he should have come off the pitch at half-time, never to wear a Manchester United shirt again.

“Listen, I stand by what I say: he’s not good enough to play for Manchester United. No, he’s turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated.

“Look, fair play to him, hopefully he gets some confidence and we start seeing something different from him. I’ll put him in my fantasy football team now!”

Sherwood’s comments haven’t gone down well with United fans. One wrote: ‘Absolute disgrace of a pundit,’ while another said: ‘Very strange to target a player and say “they’ve only shown up for one game”, are flat out “not good enough for United” and “shouldn’t wear a United shirt again” after scoring two goals. Opinions are fine but this is an ugly look. Distasteful, to be honest.’

While another United supporter commented: ‘I’m deadly serious, if you step onto Sky Sports and say the words Benjamin Sesko should never wear a United jersey again, you should have whatever accreditation that makes you eligible to be a pundit whipped off you and incinerated.’

While Sherwood wasn’t impressed by Sesko, Fletcher was far more complimentary of the youngster. Speaking after the match, the interim United manager said, per the Mirror:

“I was so happy for him. I spoke to him yesterday and we presented a video showing his movement and showing his goals, just showing how it is coming and he needs to keep believing and the players need to get more service to him.

“He did that tonight and scored two great goals. A real positive night for Ben. He had other opportunities, a header, another snapshot. The team is disappointed with a point but in terms of a personal level hopefully he can kick on from that now.

“He needed it massively. I spoke to him before the game and tried to reiterate what a good player he is and how much I’ve watched him over the years. We got the service in the box from him and it was great movement, made great runs and he took his two goals fantastically.”

United and Sesko are next in action on Sunday January 11 when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford for their FA Cup third round tie.
