Bob Arum says there is only one winner between prime Mayweather and Crawford after promoting both
Legendary boxing promoter Bob Arum has worked with some of the most talented fighters in boxing history, including both Floyd Mayweather Jr and Terence Crawford. When quizzed on a fantasy fight between the two, Arum offered a confident prediction.
Crawford established himself as a pound-for-pound great this year, dethroning Canelo Alvarez at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas back in September to become the first three-division undisputed champion of the four-belt era; after ruling supreme at both super-lightweight and welterweight.
Whilst Mayweather never became undisputed during his own illustrious career, ‘Money’, like Crawford, was a five-weight world champion and retired in 2017 with an undefeated record of 50-0, boasting wins over names such as Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and also Canelo.
As a result, many fans struggle to decide whether a prime Mayweather would have been able to hand Crawford a first career defeat, or vice versa, but Top Rank founder Arum told Sean Zittel that he believes ‘Bud’ would have come out on top.
“Crawford [would have beaten Mayweather], because Crawford is a unique kind of fighter that other fighters haven’t seen.
“The ability that he has, to switch [stances], fighters aren’t used to that, they don’t train for that. I just think that Crawford is a very, very unique talent.”
It is now expected that the Omaha-born sensation will drop down to the middleweight division in an attempt to become boxing’s third six-division world champion, with a fight against either Janibek Alimkhanuly or Carlos Adames looking the likely option for 2026.
