Carl Froch says he couldn’t beat one fighter even at his peak: “I wouldn’t have a chance”

Carl Froch sits at the table amongst the best at super middleweight, but ‘The Cobra’ recently admitted that there is one divisional rival that he does not believe he would have had a chance of defeating.

In a competitive era, Nottingham-born Froch overcame some of the top names in the 168lbs ranks, toppling Jean Pascal to first get his hands on the WBC super-middleweight title before defending it against Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell.

Froch’s first reign was then cut short by Mikkel Kessler, but the granite-chined fan-favourite would go on to become a four-time titleholder in the division, with his only other career defeat coming to the legendary Andre Ward. His grit got him through some tough nights under the lights, and he has always been adamant he would have a go against anyone.

However, on his YouTube channel, Froch championed the great Roy Jones Jr. and accepted that he would not have stood a chance if tasked with ‘Captain Hook’ in his prime.

“If I am honest, no, [I don’t think I could beat Roy Jones Jr] and I was super-middleweight four-time world champ and an International Boxing Hall of Famer.

“Listen, I can’t sit here and say that, [against] Roy Jones in his prime at super-middleweight, I would have had a chance because the guy was so fast and so skilful.

“But I was tough, and I would have kept going forward, so who knows? I might have got to him, but I never had the honour of sharing the ring with him.”

Whilst Jones could have campaigned at super-middleweight and dominated, he instead opted to try his hand at the higher weight-classes and became both a four-division champion and the first fighter to win both a middleweight and heavyweight world title since Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897. Froch has previously called him one of the best of all time.
