Celtic Must Axe ‘Awful’ Nygren After ‘Horror Show’ vs Roma
Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy is facing a serious challenge to kickstart his career at the club, as the new boss endured a torrid night at Parkhead on Thursday with the Bhoys falling to a 3-0 defeat against Roma.
It means that the French boss has now endured back-to-back defeats since joining from Columbus Crew.
In a dominant display from the Italian side, Celtic looked woefully short of quality and confidence as Nancy’s possession-based style of play appeared to be the main source of problems on a difficult night. The manager can’t take all the blame though, with one star in particular failing to impress under Nancy.
Benjamin Nygren Endures Shocker
While he certainly wasn’t the only bad performer on the pitch, Bejamin Nygren did endure a dreadful evening in the Europa League on Thursday.
Described by one fan as ‘awful’ after what the Daily Record described as a ‘horror show display’, Nygren only lasted 45 minutes before being hooked at half-time. Completing 16 passes, the winger has no shots, created no chances and provided no defensive contributions. He also managed just three passes into the final third and had no touches in the opposition box.
The 24-year-old seemed to really struggle with the on-ball demands that Nancy asks of his players and after a really poor half, it was no surprise to see him brought off at the break,
Wilfried Nancy Must Get Ruthless Vs St Mirren
After losing to both Hearts and AS Roma, Celtic are now facing the prospect of a hugely important encounter against St Mirren on Sunday in the Scottish League Cup. Two defeats from two has been an awful start for Nancy and that’s why a victory at Hampden Park is essential to start convincing fans of his credentials as head coach.
If that’s to happen, he needs his players to perform for him and that possibly means dropping Nygren.
Joining Celtic over the summer, the 24-year-old has scored seven times and provided five assists in all competitions. However, he’s scored just one Scottish Premiership goal since October 5.
With his all-around impact lacking against Roma, Nancy must take the opportunity to assess his options ahead of a crucial game, knowing that another defeat could put an end to his career his Glasgow with some fans before it has even got started.
The squad is strong enough that changes can be made, and Nygren hasn’t shown enough to justify keeping his place in the side going forward.
