Chelsea and Tottenham Flop Timo Werner Nearing MLS Transfer

Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner is close to completing a surprising move to an MLS club after falling out of favour at RB Leipzig, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.

Since winning the Champions League with the Blues, the German international has struggled at multiple sides. Re-joining RB Leipzig in 2022, Werner failed to replicate the same lethal form which he demonstrated during his first stint at the club.

Eventually joining Tottenham on loan from the Bundesliga outfit in 2024, the 29-year-old once again didn’t impress, managing just three goals across an 18-month spell. He’s since returned to Leipzig, but has only managed to make three appearances in the Bundesliga, playing 13 minutes.

Werner Nearing Move to New Club

Out of favour at the Red Bull Arena, Werner has been exploring his options and is seeking a new challenge. And according to Jacobs, the 57-cap Germany international is close to agreeing a deal to join MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.

The striker was told in the summer by Leipzig that he was not part of their plans, and there was reportedly interest from fellow MLS side New York Red Bulls over the summer. However, Werner ultimately chose to remain in Germany.

He was then linked with a move to Inter Miami in December 2025, which would have seen him link up with Lionel Messi, a move which he reportedly could, “very well imagine.” However, no transfer materialised, which has led to him pursuing alternative options.

During the 2025 season, San Jose finished 10th in the Western Conference, winning 11 games, drawing 15 and losing eight as they ultimately missed out on the MLS Cup playoffs. They will hope that Werner can be the man to turn some of those stalemates into victories.

Werner in Need of a Fresh Start After Difficult Few Years

While playing in the MLS might not have been on Werner’s radar when he was in red-hot form during his first spell at RB Leipzig, several difficult spells have seemingly damaged his confidence to an extreme level. The man who managed 34 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Die Roten Bullen back in the 2019/20 season has failed to surpass four strikes in any of his past three seasons.

A switch to San Jose, therefore, could be exactly what he needs to bounce back to his form of old. He’ll earn regular minutes in California against teams who aren’t of the same calibre as European giants, which could allow for the goals to flow. Should that happen, then a future move back to Europe could be on the cards.
