Conor Benn accuses Chris Eubank Jr of ‘victim mentality’ after worrying hospital video

Chris Eubank Jr was beaten by Conor Benn in their hotly-anticipated rematch last month and he later sparked concern among boxing fans by posting a video of himself being treated in hospital

Conor Benn has accused rival Chris Eubank Jr of having a ‘victim mentality’ after sharing a concerning video of himself being treated in hospital. Footage showed Eubank Jr, 36, laying motionless on a bed while hooked up to machines and surrounded by medical staff.

It promoted widespread sympathy from fans, some of whom urged the Briton to retire, having lost to Benn by unanimous decision in their rematch at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November. Benn, though, told fans to ask themselves why Eubank Jr posted the video and suggested that he was seeking a ‘sympathy vote’.

“I heard he had IBS throughout the last parts of training camp,” the 29-year-old said. “I heard it after the fight as well, or he’s got a stomach cyst or whatever it is.

“Ultimately, I’m not really too concerned, to be honest. I know it’s not a serious health condition. I think people need to look deeper into the reasons as to why it’s posted. There’s a certain pattern here of sympathy vote and a victim mentality.”

Benn, who was speaking to the Mail, then pointed to his own struggles that were kept private. “You don’t see pictures of me making 152 for my fight in Vegas and I’m on the floor in a blanket, struggling to make the weight,” the former WBA Continental welterweight champion said.

“Ultimately it’s just part of the game. It’s part of the sport we do. We’re modern-day gladiators. You’ll never hear me moan about anything. For one of my fights, I tore my tendon in my last spar of camp. That was my rematch against the Frenchman (Cedrick Peynaud) who had put me down in the first fight.

“Torn tendon, asthma, all of it and I’m good. I’m not here for sympathy. You’re in the wrong game if you want the sympathy of the public. No one cares.”

When posting the video, Eubank Jr confirmed that he doesn’t plan to retire. “I’ve been dealing with a lot of health issues over the last year and yeah it all finally caught up to me last month,” he posted on social media platform X.

“I will not box again until I’m back to 100% and I don’t know when that will be. But one thing’s for certain. For the fans that have supported me through thick and thin, I will do everything in my power to make sure that one day, the old me makes a big comeback.”
