Conor McGregor Finally Reveals The Real Reason he’s Coming Back to UFC
Conor McGregor‘s recent comments give an insight into the real reason he’s talking up a return to the UFC Octagon — and it’s bigger, even, than a long-awaited showdown with Michael Chandler.
The 37-year-old hasn’t fought since a loss via doctor’s stoppage to Dustin Poirier in 2021, and it’s been almost six years since his last victory — a 40-second smash-and-grab victory over Donald Cerrone. Regardless, McGregor, for years, has been headline news as he continually teases another UFC fight.
At first, it seemed the most logical opponent for McGregor to return against would be Chandler, especially as they had a 2024 fight scheduled in the summer, but it was a bout the Irishman withdrew from with one month’s notice because of an alleged broken pinky toe. Now, his goals are different.

Donald Trump ‘loves’ one UFC fighter in particular, according to Dana White, and they might well find themselves competing at The White House.
Conor McGregor is ‘Staying Ready’ in The Gym
Before McGregor revealed his true motivation for another run in the UFC, he explained his probable comeback dates, and when he’s likely to hear from matchmakers regarding whom he’ll be fighting, and when.
“The White House is on,” he told Bloody Elbow recently, which is a clear nod to his expected participation at an event tentatively scheduled for June, 2026, to coincide with the U.S. President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday celebrations, together with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
“We’re just waiting for full confirmation. I assume around February they’ll come reaching out and matchmaking and all that. That’s what they say. So I’m just staying ready in the gym two times a day.”
Real Reason For Conor McGregor’s Comeback
During his prime years as a fighter, McGregor was a magnet for championship belts as he won titles across two weight classes in Cage Warriors, as well as the UFC. In the latter organization, he broke ground as the promotion’s first-ever simultaneous two-weight champion, and appears to remain keen on writing more history, if he were ever given the chance.
“I’m motivated, self-motivated. I for sure want a crack at that 170-pound belt to go for the triple crown.”
McGregor won the interim featherweight championship for beating Chad Mendes with punches in 2015, before unifying the 145-pound titles with his 13-second masterclass against Jose Aldo that same year. Just one year later, he won the UFC lightweight championship after defeating Eddie Alvarez by knockout.
No fighter in the history of the UFC has ever won titles in three weight divisions, and time may be ticking if McGregor is to do that first, considering former middleweight and light heavyweight king Alex Pereira‘s interest in moving to the heavyweight division for bouts against the likes of Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall.
McGregor said he was full of “hope” that he’d still fight Chandler, but stressed he “won’t say no to anyone.”
“The UFC will decide it, but I don’t care. I just want to come back, I am so eager to come back and show my work.”
