Conor McGregor Offered Sensational Return to Boxing
Conor McGregor has been presented with an invitation to make a sensational return to boxing.
The MMA star remains contracted to the UFC, and has two fights left on that deal, but has not fought in the organization for more than five years. Regardless, he is linked with a return to the Octagon as he’s apparently hellbent on competing on the planned fight card at The White House, whether that’s against Michael Chandler, or an alternative opponent.
Before McGregor even got into MMA, he trained at a boxing club in Crumlin, Dublin, and made his pro debut against the former five-weight boxing champion Floyd Mayweather — losing by 10th round stoppage. Two years later, he took part in a four-round exhibition in his hometown, splitting a draw with Michael McGrane. If interested, he could fight again in 2026, or beyond.

Conor McGregor Linked With Boxing Comeback
The IBA has been organizing more notable events of late, and even held a show featuring Murat Gassiev and Kubrat Pulev on the 12th of December in Dubai. Through its boss Umar Kremlov, it is seemingly looking to capitalize on its momentum by recruiting some of the biggest names in combat sports for a crossover boxing fight.
Speaking on Instagram, Kremlov said his objective would be to lure McGregor back to boxing.
“Let’s make the best main event of 2026.”
Kremlov was reacting to a video of a recent staredown between McGregor and recent UFC champion Petr Yan, who produced one of the performances of the year by besting Merab Dvalishvili to complete a remarkable second stint as king after four years in the abyss.
“IBA is ready to organize this fight — all we need is your agreement,” said Kremlov. “Waiting for your confirmation Yan [and] McGregor.”
It is unclear if McGregor would consider such an option, particularly when he remains contractually-bound to the UFC. Additionally, even if he were to enter free agency, it stands to logic that he may want to elevate a promotion that he co-owns called Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. He has even said before that he regards himself to be a “player-manager” in that organization. And BKFC boss David Feldman even told GIVE ME SPORT reporter Alan Dawson that McGregor could do that if he wanted, fighting against the likes of Mike Perry.
For McGregor, though, it’s more likely he’d want to fight Islam Makchachev in the UFC, than Yan in boxing.
Speaking to Bloody Elbow about a prospective battle with Makachev, as he’s eager to challenge for a championship in a third weight class, he said: “I’m self-motivated, and I for sure want a crack at that belt. I for sure want a crack at that 170lb belt to go for the triple crown.
“It would be a good fight, a good scrap. Southpaw vs southpaw. It was a good performance [against Jack Della Maddalena] and fair play to him. So, yeah, I’m excited for it. Let’s see what happens. Let’s get back in the mix.”
