Bruno Guimaraes almost came to blows at full-time Cristian Romero after the Argentine appeared to copy his rivals celebration following his stoppage time equaliser at Newcastle
Bruno Guimaraes had to be held back from confronting Cristian Romero after his late goal earned Tottenham a point at Newcastle.
The Argentine bagged a brace, twice equalising for the north Londoners, but he appeared to rattle the Magpies midfielder by copying his celebration. Romero’s header cancelled out Guimaraes, who opened the scoring on the night. Anthony Gordon scored a penalty on 86 minutes before the Tottenham defender landed an overhead kick in stoppage time.
He appeared to mimic the cupping of the ears celebration that is used by Guimaraes as well as pointing to the name on the back of his shirt – and at full-time the two players had to be separated by their team-mates as tensions boiled over.
Guimaraes’ frustration no doubt stemmed from another missed opportunity as Newcastle’s draw leaves them in the bottom half with their season still not clicking into gear.
Newcastle have let four leads slip this season – some of those games ending with them losing, others with the points being shared. Had they held on for victory on all those occasions then they would be top of the Premier League – giving Howe another issue to deal with.

“It’s a real strange one,” he said. “Sometimes these things go in cycles and happen, and you can quite work them out, like our away form. This is another one. Historically we have been very good at seeing games out and navigating tough situations, managing the game. We have got to try and re-find that quickly because it’s costing us important points.”
For Tottenham the late point was much needed after they were beaten by Fulham on Saturday. The home crowd booed their team as they lost again on their own patch, but their fight on the road particularly pleased Thomas Frank, who is under pressure.
He said: “I really liked the character and the mentality in the team with what they showed after three tough games. It’s the fourth game in 10 days, a third away game. A very difficult place to go down two times and come back. It shows everything about the willingness and mentality in the team.”
Defeat would’ve left a sour taste in Frank’s mouth as he aired issue with the awarding on the 86th minute penalty, which came about after a VAR intervention.
“It was an absolute mistake from the VAR,” said the Spurs boss. “The referee did good to do the ref call and they encourage the refereeing call on the pitch. For me, that is never a penalty.”
