Darren Fletcher Admits Manchester United Players Are ‘Fragile'

Darren Fletcher’s second – and potentially last – match in charge of Manchester United at Old Trafford saw his side lose 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the FA Cup and the Scottish interim manager’s nine-word assessment of his squad has caused a massive stir.

Benjamin Sesko gave his teammates a glimmer of hope late on, but Brajan Gruda’s opener and Danny Welbeck’s sweet left-footed strike in the 64th minute saw Fabian Hurzeler’s men secure passage into the fourth round of football’s oldest competition of all time.

Fletcher’s men had plenty of chances to make the affair much tighter than it was, but their potency – or lack thereof – in the final third saw them exit at the earliest possible stage. Prompting worry from the United fans, he then spoke about the fortunes of a club he played 342 times for across a 14-year period.

Given that his interim stewardship began with a 2-2 draw with Burnley, Fletcher is yet to oversee a win in the Old Trafford hotseat. Addressing what the future holds for him, he said: “I have to report tomorrow morning to Carrington. That’s all I know. I’ve had zero indication. All my energy and focus has been on these two games. It’s a massive responsibility to lead this club, and I’ve given my best.”

There is every chance that Fletcher’s final match in charge was against Brighton. Club hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being linked with a return on a caretaker basis until the end of the 2025/26 campaign as such a thin managerial market means a permanent replacement for Amorim will be found in the summer.

Even during Amorim’s stewardship, despite the concerns over his qualities, there were also apprehensions about the squad’s mentality from insiders, Manchester Evening News reported. The report insisted the fact that points had often been dropped from winning positions in the Premier League raised questions over their ability to compete.

And Fletcher’s post-match comments reflect that. In the immediate aftermath of defeat, Fletcher fulfilled his media duties as the figurehead and mentioned there’s a sense of fragility with the group of players he’s having to compete with.

“I think you can see the players are fragile.”

Watch Fletcher’s post-match interview below (0:40 onwards):

“Fletcher might get the sack for saying this publicly,” one fan said as another added that an interim manager shouldn’t be so open and honest about the state of a club. Flummoxed at his post-defeat comments, they wrote, “INTERIM manager saying this is so dark. Yikes man.”

Others believe that his remarks mimic those of Ruben Amorim, who was sacked after a hodgepodge 14 months in charge. “Same thing Amorim said but just with a Portuguese accent,” one said as they referenced Amorim, who wasn’t afraid to be brutally honest infront of the media.

In fact, the Portuguese’s comments regarding the fractured relationship between himself and the board were ultimately what lost him his job after their 2-2 draw with Leeds United earlier in 2026.

“Haha 2 games & he’s throwing the players under the bus,” another added while they reflected on what Fletcher had to say about United’s current state of affairs. “He’s not lying. And the players also gotta be tired from the directionless club they’re playing for,” said another as a final supporter added: “So it’s not the manager’s fault??? It’s the players’.”

‘Don’t Waste The Season’ – Fletcher Sends Plea to Man Utd Players After FA Cup Exit

After losing to Brighton, United find themselves in a precarious position: they have been eliminated from their opening tie in both the FA Cup and League Cup in the same season for the first time since 1981/82. The objective now, of course, is to secure top four credentials – which is something Amorim outright refused to say was his and his team’s target.

“Any time you come in to Manchester United, it’s a massive job,” the 41-year-old said, per The Sun, before adding, “The thing for me is there’s still a lot to play for this season. And I think if I look at the players and we get players back from injury and AFCON, and we get a fuller squad, I think these players have got the ability to qualify in the Champions League places.

“It’s not about a manager. It’s not about directors. It’s about everyone and the players have to group together, take responsibility, find a way of improving quickly and take on the challenge for the rest of the season. Don’t waste the season.

“It’s not Manchester United level or what’s expected from Manchester United. But ultimately, we have to do something,” he continued while referencing the size and stature of United. “And that’s still not success, but take a step forward by qualifying for the Champions League. I keep repeating that – it sounds like a broken record – but there’s still a lot to play for in the league this season.”
