Darren Fletcher could be in charge of Man United heading into the Manchester derby next week, according to David Ornstein.
The former midfielder is currently in caretaker charge of the Red Devils following the decision sack Ruben Amorim on Monday after 14 months in charge.
Fletcher has already led Man Utd in the 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor midweek and will lead the team into the FA Cup third round clash with Brighton this weekend as the search for an interim boss until the end of the season continues.
However Fletcher’s time in charge could extend into a third game, as per the latest update.
Fletcher Could Lead Man Utd Into Manchester Derby
The Athletic’s David Ornstein delivered an update on Man United’s interim head coach search, suggesting that Darren Fletcher could yet lead the club into the next two matches, including the Manchester derby against Man City.
Speaking to NBC Sports, Ornstein said: “Darren Fletcher will take Manchester United for at least one more match and that’s Brighton in the FA Cup at the weekend. He could even still be in charge for their next Premier League game which is the Manchester derby against City the following weekend. We’ll have to wait and see.
“Whoever they choose to go for – and I expect news next week – will be in charge until the end of the season and at that point they will be looking to make a permanent appointment, so they’ve got some time to really deliberate over who is going to take them forward in the longer term.
“Man United’s permanent process hasn’t started at this point in time.”
Man United Can’t Afford To Write Off Season
While Manchester United are looking likely to name a boss until the end of the season, it’s crucial that the club get the appointment right. After missing out on European football this term, the Red Devils simply can’t afford to miss out again. As it stands, Man Utd are sitting in 7th place in the Premier League table and have a decent chance of qualifying for either the Europa League or Europa Conference League if they can kick on in the second half of the season.
What they can’t afford to do is take their foot off the gas and write off the campaign. There’s still so much to play for, even if the managerial situation is uncertain.
