Ex-Manchester United star Antony was caught in the chaos of the Seville derby

Former Manchester United flop Antony was the subject of abuse while watching the chaos-filled Seville derby. The 25-year-old was ineligible to play for Real Betis in their Sunday clash against rivals Sevilla after being sent off a week prior against Girona.

Taking his place in a box in the stands, the Brazilian was present to watch his side earn an impressive 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from ex-West Ham midfielder Pablo Fornals and Sergi Altimira.

Antony, who joined Betis on a permanent deal this past summer after his six-month loan, was spotted supporting his team via footage taken from the stands. The winger was seen taunting the home fans when celebrating one of Betis’ goals at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Videos posted across social media platforms showed Antony shouting and raising his arms at Sevilla fans, who retaliated by throwing bottles and other objects at his box. Other fans could be seen gesturing their middle finger at the footballer in what was a fierce atmosphere that eventually boiled over on the pitch.

With Betis 2-0 up and just eight minutes left to go, Sevilla winger Isaac Romero was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Betis’s Valentin Gomez. Romero being given his marching orders only led to further chaos in the stands with bottles and other projectiles being thrown on the pitch.

The rising unrest led referee Jose Luis Mubuera Montero to suspend the game. Proceedings were halted for 15 minutes before the two teams returned and played out the final few minutes of the clash.

The victory for ex-Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini saw Betis rise to fifth in LaLiga and are now seven points behind Atletico Madrid in the final Champions League qualification place.

After a nightmare three-year stint at Old Trafford, Antony has reignited his once-blossoming career in Spain with 15 goals and eight assists in his 39 appearances for Betis thus far. After leaving United this past summer, the winger said: “What happened in Manchester, only I know how difficult it was.”

With six goals in 13 games already this season, the Brazil international has played a huge role in Betis’ recent ascendancy but his ill-discipline almost flared up again during their Europa League match against Utrecht.

In the Thursday night game, Antony very nearly picked what would have been a second consecutive red card when appearing to headbutt his opponent, Souffian El Karouani.

The Utrecht left-back went down clutching his head, but the Betis ace escaped a caution. The clash was then sent to review by VAR, but the officiating team also cleared Antony of any punishment.
