Galatasaray Hold Talks to Sign Man Utd Star Manuel Ugarte

Manchester United’s January window could yet see movement in midfield despite recent changes behind the scenes. While Manuel Ugarte has featured in the last two matches, speculation over his future has not gone away, with interest from abroad continuing to gather pace. Reports from Turkey now suggest talks are advancing, placing United’s stance on outgoings back under the spotlight as the window progresses.
Galatasaray push to sign Manuel Ugarte from Manchester United
According to reports in the Turkish media, Galatasaray are in talks to sign Ugarte from Manchester United. The Uruguay international has struggled for consistent minutes this season, making just seven Premier League starts from a possible 21. Although Ugarte has started United’s last two games under interim boss Darren Fletcher, an exit from Old Trafford has not been ruled out.
Turkish outlet Haber Sarikirmizi report comments from journalist Yakup Cınar, who claims transfer talks have been ongoing and that Galatasaray are optimistic about their chances. The Super Lig leaders are said to be exploring a loan deal with an option to buy, viewing Ugarte, who earns £150,000-a-week, as a priority target to strengthen their midfield during the winter window.
Cinar revealed that two of Ugarte’s Uruguay teammates have been involved in efforts to convince him to move to Istanbul. One is Fernando Muslera, a club legend who made more than 400 appearances for Galatasaray before returning to South America earlier this year. The other is Lucas Torreira, who has been at Galatasaray since joining from Arsenal in 2022.
Torreira is said to have been working to persuade Ugarte since earlier this month, outlining the sporting project and environment at the club. Çınar added: “Galatasaray continues its contacts regarding Manuel Ugarte. Names such as Muslera and Torreira are in talks with the player about Galatasaray. Galatasaray wants to rent him with a loan purchase option. The player will leave Manchester United 100%.”
United stance and wider midfield picture
Manchester United’s position on outgoings remains unclear. Reports elsewhere in Europe have suggested the club may be pausing exits for now, particularly with uncertainty around other squad members. Galatasaray are also monitoring the situation of Gabriel Sara, who has been linked with a return to the UK amid interest from Fulham and Sunderland.
Ugarte remains under contract at United until 2029, with the option of a further year, giving the club leverage should they reassess. However, with Galatasaray continuing to push and intermediaries actively involved, the situation is one to watch as the window progresses.
