Darts fans have been stunned by the revelation that Dutch star Gian van Veen’s real name isn’t actually Gian.

Van Veen averaged 102.99 and nailed 55% of his doubles as he battled past the veteran, who himself averaged an impressive 102.91 and had a solid 45.45% checkout percentage himself. The 23-year-old’s recent performances at Alexandra Palace, where he’s also beaten Luke Humphries, means he has moved up to number three in the PDC Order of Merit, not only all but ensuring his spot in the 2026 Premier League, but also taking The Giant above the legendary Michael van Gerwen to become the new Dutch number one.

It’s the first time since 2012 there has been a different name atop the Dutch darting ladder, with Van Gerwen crashing out in round four to The Flying Scotsman.

In the midst of Van Veen’s victory over ‘Cool Hand’ in the quarter-final, news began circulating on social media that his first name isn’t actually Gian. Pieter Gerard van Veen is in fact the 23-year-old’s full name, although supporters appear to agree with the player that Gian is a cooler choice.

The revelation has caused immense fan reaction, with supporters replying on X: “Wow, this absolutely blew my mind!” and “HOW did I not know this??”

Van Veen entered the tournament as third favourite to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy, behind reigning champion Luke Littler and the man he saw off in the quarters in Humphries.

The current World Youth Champion and European Champion appears ready to challenge Littler for his throne, with the pair set to meet in tonight’s final, with the exact UK start time being officially finalised.

Whether they win or lose, the pair will be happy with how their bank accounts look following the final, with the loser set to pocket £400,000 while the winner will take home the illustrious and first-ever £1,000,000 jackpot.

Whether he goes by Pieter or Gian, Van Veen will need to continue delivering his finest arrows if he wants to see off The Nuke in the final, who himself is once again having a tournament to remember.
