Gordon Ramsay demonstrated his true colours by almost bringing Adam Peaty to tears with his comments about the swimmer
Gordon Ramsay’s touching text message once nearly left his future son-in-law Adam Peaty in tears. The swimming sensation, 30, is set to marry Ramsay’s daughter Holly on Saturday, December 27.
The couple, who first crossed paths in 2021 when Peaty took part in Strictly Come Dancing alongside Holly’s younger sister Tilly, announced their engagement in September 2024. Their wedding ceremony will take place at Bath Abbey.
Celebrity chef Gordon is expected to play an important role in the A-list wedding, having formed a close bond with Team GB legend Peaty in recent years. Peaty has spoken candidly about the guidance he has received from the Ramsays after his struggles with mental health and alcohol, which led him to pull out of the British Swimming Championships in 2023.
Their strong relationship was evident when Peaty almost broke down in tears during his appearance on the High Performance podcast when host Jake Humphrey read out a text Gordon had sent about his future son-in-law.
“I want you to know he’s an amazing young man with such a great attitude,” wrote TV sensation Ramsay earlier this year. “Honestly, I could not ask for a more down-to-earth, respectable future son-in-law. What he’s achieved is incredible and he’s not done yet. Looking forward to catching up soon.”

After hearing what Ramsay had to say, Peaty was somewhat overwhelmed. “That makes me emotional, I don’t want to cry on the podcast, but it makes me very emotional,” Peaty said. “In this last year or so, seeing how he performs; the balance he has to create in his life with high performance, family life and love, his children, and his wife is incredible.
“I love how he’s already signing me up for the LA [Olympics in 2028) but he’s a great father-in-law. Hopefully, next year… we already call it father-in-law and mother-in-law.
“He’s also very down to earth with what he’s done and a great guide. Another blessing for me to look up to. Someone like him and Tana as well as my own parents, who give their perspective on my life, and it’s very important, going forward, that you have those people.”
It wasn’t the first time Peaty had become emotional talking to his model fiancé’s father. The Olympian previously revealed both he and the fiery chef were moved to tears when he asked Gordon for his permission to propose to Holly.
On asking for Ramsay’s blessing, he said: “I was very traditional, I asked Gordon and Tana for their permission to marry Holly. It was very emotional, we were in Cornwall and I said can we have half an hour, just us three. And I cried, they cried, we had a few hugs, and here we are.”
Revealing more details about the proposal itself, Peaty admitted his plan to pop the question at a quiet restaurant in Greece went wrong after he accidentally booked the wrong one. Forced to improvise, he recalled: “I thought I’ll do it after, then noticed a lovely castle and thought I’ll see what’s going on behind the wall.
“I went round and I s*** you not, two abandoned cars, three dead cats, four chickens just roaming around. I was like f*** me I cannot do it here!’ So I went, ‘Think, think, think!’
“Then I thought it’s getting late so it will be getting quieter now. But of course, with the Mediterranean, it’s the other way around – everyone comes out at 10pm! So we went back to the hotel, had a lovely villa with a pool. I put on a beautiful classical playlist and got down on one knee.
“I guarantee on the wedding I will be crying all day,” he added, as he revealed the day itself will be “quite a big” affair, with eight Michelin star chef Ramsay in charge of the food.
Ramsay has also previously opened up about the moment Peaty sought his blessing, revealing: “He’s a very nice guy. He’s so down to earth and so focused and disciplined. He sat us down in Cornwall and he said, ‘Holly is just the perfect woman. I’d like to get your blessing – from you and Tana for her hand in marriage.’
“It was that sort of amazing moment. Everything went quiet. As a future son-in-law, we couldn’t ask for anyone better. He’s so grounded. Those two get on so well. It’s a blessing.”
