When performing most chest exercises, it’s important to keep your elbows slightly below shoulder level to protect your joints and reduce the risk of rotator cuff injuries. In other words, avoid flaring your elbows straight out to the sides. This tip applies to nearly all chest exercises, including the dumbbell chest press, bench press, pec deck flyes, push-ups, and chest press machines.
