What Actually Causes High Cholesterol? | Dr. Robert Lustig

Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, explains the different types of cholesterol and what drives cardiovascular disease.

Cholesterol is necessary for the body. In fact, our bodies have a method for manufacturing it. But cholesterol gets a bad rap because of confusion about the types—and which type actually drives cardiovascular disease.

Understanding the different types of cholesterol can help you tailor your diet and lifestyle habits for better metabolic health. Keep in mind that the pattern of all types of cholesterol taken together, rather than individual levels, matters the most.

Types of cholesterol

– high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: “good” cholesterol
– low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—two types: large buoyant (lbLDL) and small dense (sdLDL)
– very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL): represented as triglycerides

Understanding the types of LDL:

– lbLDL: neutral when it comes to cardiovascular health and is elevated via fat consumption
– sdLDL: drives atherosclerosis and is elevated via sugar consumption

✅ What you can do:

– Reduce sugar consumption to minimize sdLDL.
– Get regular exercise to elevate HDL.

    You are only half right.
BUT either eat low fat high carb OR low carb high fat and get similar results depending on the individuals genetics and metabolism. There is more long term evidence that low fat (10% or less) works best with the majority of people based on years of evidence. Keto is new and not much long term evidence.
Dr. Walter Kempner from Duke University developed the well documented “white rice diet” in the 1940s, which was a low-fat, low-sodium diet primarily composed of white rice, fruit, juice, and sugar. This diet was shown to help manage and even reverse conditions like hypertension and type 2 diabetes in the majority of his patients.
In nature food is either high in fat and low in carbs OR high in carbs but low in fat but not both. The SAD diet that’s is killing us based on processed foods is both high in fat and simple carbs! The exception is the coconut and some nuts and seeds.

What happens if you get a stent and you don't lower your cholesterol? It clogs up.

There are not multiple cholesterols, there are multiple carrier proteins

Many people do not know that a high oxalate diet of spinach, Nuts and berries that add a high oxalate load have a massive impact on the plaque levels in our arteries. Cut back on high oxalate fruits and veggies and watch your plaque melt away.

SUGAR, not fat, is the VILLAIN behind CHOLESTEROL. This is life-and-death information for MILLIONS around the world who have traditionally eaten, and still habitually eat, carbs that turn into sugar as their main and staple meals of the day!

I'm gonna take a "wild guess" and say this doctor probably advertise keto or carnivore diets! 😉

Saying small dense ldl particles, is the only dangerous ldl to worry about, has been debunked by science long ago….all ldl's can get stuck in the blood vessels, so they are all bad.

Keto doctors/supplements sales people- just likes to point out small dense ldl particles, because these are more pronounced in diabetic people who eats too much sugar carbohydrates. But all types of ldl's kills people over time, if they don't get it reduced to established recommended levels! 😉

I don't get it. Was on Keto diet and one meal a day for 8 months and lost 46 lbs. Less than 20g of carbs a day and my Triglycerides and LDL are through the roof.

Dietary fat is an issue. High SF down regulates LDL receptors and this increases atherosclerotic risk.
