Scott McTominay had already come close with a free header at the back post before the deadlock was broken at the seventh minute.
David Neres got away from Juan Cabal and Teun Koopmeiners to reach the by-line down the right, pulling back for Hojlund to get in front of Lloyd Kelly and flick it in from a tight angle.
It was Hojlund’s first goal in over two months, since the 2-1 Serie A victory over Genoa on October 5.
While there were muscular issues during that time, he had fired blanks in eight appearances between Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia.
