“I want my title back”: Former world champion ‘ready’ for Fabio Wardley fight
Fabio Wardley is preparing for a first defence of the WBO heavyweight world title and there is a former champion who hopes to be in the opposing corner and to reclaim world honours.
Wardley underwent a phenomenal rise during 2025, moving up from the domestic level to take on Justis Huni in his first introduction to the world stage, as he completed his dream of headlining at Portman Road.
After 10 rounds of being second-best against the Australian, Wardley finally showed that he belonged as he brought the show to a close with a sensational knockout having been down on the cards.
The Ipswich fan-favourite then set about a rise into title contention and bravely accepted a clash with in-form WBO Interim titleholder Joseph Parker and once again found himself being outboxed as he entered the championship rounds.
Yet, Wardley again showed his power and shook up the division by halting Parker in round 11 to get his hands on the WBO Interim strap, which was upgraded to the full world title when Oleksandr Usyk vacated.
Now, Wardley looks to establish himself as a worthy world champion, but he could be set for a tough task in his first world title contest if Daniel Dubois has his way. The former IBF heavyweight ruler told iFL TV that he would ‘jump at the opportunity’ to challenge for Wardley’s WBO crown.
“That is it, [I want to] get that title back. That is my mission, for now.
I still want it [the Wardley fight], bring it on, I can’t wait. If Frank makes that fight then I will be delighted, I will jump at that opportunity. Whoever steps up, I am ready.”
Derek Chisora had been considered as the frontrunner to be Wardley’s first challenger, but the 49-fight veteran now seems set to take on Deontay Wilder instead, with a date and location already touted for what will be ‘Del Boy’s’ farewell fight.
